Maharaja fills a Dogfish Head snifter with a hazy, blood orange that glows. The one-half inch, frothy white foam drops to a ring within a few minutes, leaving rings of lace with each sip.
Pine sap and caramelized sugar are strong and up front, while mint and toasted malt fill out the middle. Alcohol fumes begin to dominate with warmth.
Dramatic bitterness envelopes the tongue, then occupies the entire palate, leaving little room for citrus flavors. Similar to an American Barley Wine, raisins and caramel show up with warmth.
Alcohol is very high, almost hot, while the astringency of hops wreaks havoc on the palate. A medium body with prickly carbonation and woolly texture.
Maharaja is not for the faint of heart, but fans of bitterness will find it to be in their wheelhouse. This one caters to the extremes, leaving no room for fine nuances to be discerned while sipping. One short pour at a time, it is enjoyable and can improve a meal of cheese and sausage.
