Released Spring, 2012. Poured into a cognac snifter.
Red-orange color with some hop haze. Crowned with a stunningly stagnant inch of eggshell head. Starting to lace.
Burnt sugar maltiness with a lofty pine hop presence in the nose. Very, very light grapefruit nuance; but mostly just the pith. Dominantly pine with a few sparing herbal hop notes.
Egad! This DIPA is firmly bitter, but balanced. There's a rich and sweet malty backbone that has some dry caramel tones. Oily hops construct pine and grapefruit pith flavors with a touch of earthiness. Very reminiscent of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. A beastly and malty Imperial IPA with great composition, but without particularly evident hop flavors. It's hoppy, sure, but I can't pin much down other than pine and grapefruit.
Drinks big. A fuller-in-body IIPA with that perfect light carbonation. Pretty silky. Strength gets at me a bit, but that's to be expected of a brew that is very similar to an American-style barleywine.
One of those beers that just comes together so well. I recognize what it is for the style, and it's still a great example.

This is a very good beer, but I have had better. Maybe I have held on to this one too long, but it was a bit too malty for my taste. Although the bottle promotes the balance and "control" like a raja of both hops and malts. I feel like the malts are too intense for the beer. Well balanced but for the style I would say medium to high ratings.
Color: Dark bronze, but with some transparency, also a very low amount of head and lacing.
Smell: Not as intense as a West Coast IPA. Maybe that is my favorite style?
Taste: Balanced, I got this one on sale for a super deal so I figured I would try it, but I would not pay what the original price reflected.
Overall: A Solid beer, well balanced, not as much hops going on as I would like but its not a bad beer in any regard. But, to me there are much better in the same price range.
