Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

22 oz. bomber purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, unclear bottling date but Batch #17/2013 vintage, poured into my The Bruery tulip glass, drank 7/3/13 over an hour or so.

A: 2/3 - deep orange-brown coloration, minimal clarity (can't see or read through), minimal white head dissipates into subtle glass lacing, big time alcohol legs for an imperial IPA!

S: 9/12 - picking up pine and resiny aroma as expected with lots of booze; unfortunately, this bottle is several months old and the hop aroma is much more muted than I recall on previous encounters with this beer

T: 17/20 - on the anterior tongue, the bitterness is a big time slap in the tongue; in the middle3 of the mouth, it definitely settles into a pine forest that, I think, is the result of a huge flame-out addition of Simcoe and Chinook; there is also some big time booze, which, I think, much more resembles a American barleywine than an imperial IPA; also picking up some marmalade and citrus qualities that stick on the tongue in the aftertaste

M: 4/5 - super-bodied with thick hop oils coating the tongue, 10%+ is present and, as mentioned above, drinks much more like an American barleywine than a imperial IPA for me; moderate carbonation for the ABV and large alcohol legs

O: 9/10 - historically, this has been one of my favorite imperial IPAs; unfortunately, this beer is long in the tooth and the hop aroma/flavor has dissipated over time - don't get me wrong, it's still an excellent drinking experience, and, if you want to get buZZed, this will get you there; I'd put it in the same category as a borderline imperial IPA/American barleywine similar to Sierra Nevada's Hoptimum, but, on this pouring, I much prefer the Hoptimum
