Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

22oz bottle split and poured into a tulip. Release No 1 2013.

A: Pours a very clear amber brownish with a one finger slightly yellowed head. Lots of tiny bubbles visible rising to the surface. Leaves some nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: Very fruity hop aroma going on in this beer. Lots of grapefruit and other succulent goodness. Touch of sweet malts in the background. Earthiness permeates the beer as well. Slight hint of alcohol.

T: Great hop profile on this beer. Well rounded hoppiness with a blend of fruit and earthiness. Surprised this sucker was released in January as the hops have held on pretty well. The malt adds a fairly sweet backing. Aftertaste lingers with some hop. Certainly a bitter brew.

M: Medium to full body with average carbonation. A bit sticky on the tongue giving it a nectar like mouthfeel. Isn't too hot but is nice and warming.

Overall quite happy I got to try this brew out, a solid double IPA that any hophead should seek out. Will be looking to pick one up as early next year as I can.

Avery Brewing Company - Maharaja, poured into DFH Spiegelau IPA glass.

Look - Pours a hazy amber ruby with a massive soapy head that dissipates slowly. Abundance of lacing. Brews can't look any better than this from my perspective.

Smell - Deep caramel malts and citrus hops with a side of pine. Mouth watering and tangy.

Taste - Rich and borderline creamy sweet malt introduction moves aside for fruity juiciness and a piney/resin bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied, sits bitter pine on the palate and back of the throat. Super smooth, slightly warming, but super drinkable.

Overall - Phenomenal, worth getting if you can find it for hop heads. Hop fanatics who don't like malt in their DIPA might not be as impressed as I was but I think it's still solid even in that regard. 100% recommend this stellar brew.
