Avery Maharaja Imperial IPA: This is my first try at purchasing an expensive single bottle of “designer” beer. What is the world coming to if having a beer at home pushes $5.00 a glass? This had better be good! And 22 ounces of high alcohol content beer is too much for me to take in one sitting, but luckily my wife is all too happy to join in if the beer is exceptional. But on to the review..
Release #15, Winter 2011/2012. In the glass the Maharaja was caramel in color, but did show a ruby glow if held up to the light. This is a cloudy beer, with particles of sediment circulating amidst the carbonation. Topped with a beautiful head, artistic larger bubbles arranged in a sea of fine foam, the Maharaja is a joy to behold. The aroma holds up its end with a nice mix of hop spice tones and sweet malt notes. The only way to describe the flavor is balance. Many IPA’s start out with malt and then the hops kick in at the finish. With the Maharaja, the malt and the hops work together throughout the experience. There is lots of complexity, and many flavors, but all work well together. The warmth of the alcohol is noticeable, and the aftertaste has a touch of bitter. So yes, this is exceptional ale, but there are a few signature four packs of Double IPAs that are in the same league.

Smells like honeydew, looks like peach iced tea. Very clear and clean-looking.

This is one I wish I'd waited longer to open; I somehow overlooked the ABV % when cracking my bomber.

The hoppy aftertaste really develops slowly, and continues to evolve for minutes after I've sipped. Very intriguing stuff.

Poured into an ovesized tulip.

This brew is a deep, nearly brown colored burnt orange in color with a three-finger thick off-white head that leaves massive chunky lacing clinging to the sides of the glass. Thick as in if allowed to dry, I'd have something to eat.

Smells of earthy, oily, resinous hops, piney, with big citrus notes and a dose of biscuit and toasted caramel malts.

This brew has a lot going on. Big citrus hoppiness along with a deep, oily pine, earthiness that bites. This is incredibly well balanced with a burnt caramel maltiness that keeps the hops in check.

Thick and creamy - silky smooth...coats the tongue.

Given the abv, I'd say this is a deceptively delicious brew that is highly sessionable. A must try.

I smell canned pineapples. I love canned pineapples, and this beer smells like them in spades. I taste canned pineapples, and this beer has the canned pineapple flavahs. Bitters are in there too. Bitter canned pineapples should be patented. Sweet like canned pineapples, and there's some spice in there too, but I'm not sure which one. It's like when you open the cupboard where you keep the spices, and all the spices waft your way in unison. A lovely smell, but you're not sure which one is making your nose so happy.

It pours amber, and it has bubbles, and it's pretty to look at being all amber and everything. But it's about the pineapples!!

Finally got my hands on the new batch. Batch 13 March 2011. Poured from bomber to pint glass.

A - The beer pours a nearly clear orange amber color with a nice 2 finger slightly off-white head. Great retention and lacing throughout.

S - A very good aroma with tons of fruity character: guava, tropical fruit, mango, lemon, orange, grapefruit. The aroma hides the alcohol fairly well though for such a big brew it doesn't completely mask it.

T - The bitterness of the earthy, piney, fruity hop character hits the palette first. A nice sweet biscuit/bready malt character follows and blends nicely with the hops. Very well balanced. Hides the alcohol well, though the heat is detectable. Very good.

M - Moderate carbonation, almost creamy in its thickness. Upper end of medium bodied.

O - This is a great brew! I found this batch to be a bit heavy in the booze but not so much to deter from the overall excellence. I really enjoyed the previous batch as well. One of the best DIPAs in my opinion.

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.
