Notes/Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

A: This pours a very nice copper with a one finger thick head that quickly fades. As the head fades, it leaves a lot of lace on the glass.

S: Lots of hops and malt. The hops give of a nice citrus and pine smell. There really isn't much else to the smell, but it honestly doesn't need it. It just smells so good!

T: At first there is a lot of hops, but then I start to get a nice amount of malt. The hop taste lingers on the back of the tongue and the malt on the front.

M: There is a strong amount of crispness on the front, middle and back of the mouth. It feels like I have a lot of foam in my mouth. It also has a strong crispness going down the throat.

O: This is a very solid DIPA. It is far from my favorite, but it does have a lot of great qualities.

True to it's name, this beer is a "Great King". Weighing in at a heft 10.39% ABV and whopping 102 IBU's, Maharaja from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder, CO pours a hazy orange-amber color, featuring a slightly off-white head that provides a great deal of lacing throughout. A BIG citrus hop nose mingles with bready malt notes as well as occasional whiffs of piney and resiny hop aromas. The flavor of this brew stays close to the aromas we picked up on, with faintly toasted malt flavors blending beautifully with the citrusy hop characteristics before finishing with a smooth and well balanced finish. Maharaja shows a medium body with a tongue-prickling carbonation. Another in the great Dictator Series from Avery.

Poured into a Duvel glass.

Pours a cloudy, deep dark amber copper. Has a thick, creamy off white yellowish head. Really nice tight bubbles. Excellent lacing and head retention. Big chunky island sits up top. Top notch looking brew.

Wow, massive hop profile; big resin and oil. Grapefruit, citrus, pine earth, lots going on. Big malted barley. A extremely good, mouthwatering flavor. Awesome nose.

Brew is very, surprisingly creamy from that always present head. Tremendous mouthfeel here. Insane subtle feel here. Finish is a bit peppery and drying. Really nice bitterness here. Wow tremendous flavors here; oily resin, big fruits, creamy caramel and barley malts. Wow this is an unbelievable brew here. Massive flavor and maybe the best full bodied mouthfeel I have had in an double IPA. Worldclass stuff here.

This brew is world class and maybe the best example I have had for the style. It is so damn good all around and I would session this stuff until I feel asleep. I am torn when giving a perfect score, but man this brew is just that good. For me you cant do much better in terms of looks, nose, taste and feel. Tremendous.

Bottle was ket in fridge. Batch 13, March 2011.
Poured into a tulip.

A- Pours a sunset orange, hazy, creamy yellowish head that lingers
for a while.

S- hoppy. Strong malts.

T- Sweet, dark caramel. Hops, lots of bitterness from the hops.

M- Good carbonation. Can taste the alcohol.

O- Not the best DIPA that i've tried. Don't get me wrong, it's
drinkable, just not my favorite.

Served in a large snifter.

Clear, amber body with no substantial head.

Smells of citrus fruits and hops, sweet caramel malts. Intermittent piney hops, as well. This is a relatively big smell. Wonderful!

Taste follows aroma with great uniformity. The caramel and toffee malts entice you to drink faster, as the bitters discourage you from doing so.

Beer is slightly undercarbonated and feels a bit too sticky. Subsequently, the hops lose a considerable amount of "pop" as the beer warms up.

Overall, this is an amazing beer. It's delicious and big, just what a DIPA oughta be.
