On-tap at the Avery Tap Room. Served in a Nonic, Piglet arrived with a copper hue hue and a small, yet dense cream head. The head sticks well and good lace is left behind.
The citrus aroma I have received from most American IPAs is absent. Instead, a strong dose of pine, pepper and clove greets the nose. Malts are relatively subdued, but have a deeply toasted quality. In the mouth, the beer starts out dry and toasted. Bitterness hits fast with a relatively strong pine and pepper bite. It lingers through the dry finish. A moderate body that has soft carbonation rounds things out.
Piglet was a nice shift from the citrus bombs that are most American IPAs. I'm really glad I gave it a try.

On tap at the brewery. Got there right when it opened. Around the back of a warehouse. The bartender was a very cool chick. Apparently they are moving to a new bigger location soon… very cool. Light brown color with a white head. Piney with citra hops… awesome nose. Tastes very smooth. A nice balanced hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth and refreshing. Enjoyed this one very much.

On tap at the brewery in August 2009. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a moderate brown color with a white head. Nose is of citrus zest along with a bit of pine. Some caramel sweetness as well. Taste hits harder on some of the hoppy notes, but with a somewhat restrained bitterness. Body is fairly thick and nicely bitter. Drinks alright, although the combination of the body and the taste is a bit off. Overall, an interesting concept and quite good.

T- very light citrus rind hops caramel. Not tht bitter at all
M- pretty thin and low carb
D- An OK IPA. Easy drinker though. Just not very complex or hoppy

On tap @ O'Briens Pub (San Diego, CA) on 11/10/09. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear coppery amber, with a thin covering of creamy brite-white head. This retains with a sturdy look, leaving some decent patchy lacing behind. Fresh pine and citrus exert a hoppy presence here in the aroma, being evened by a nice balancing tang of bread and caramel. Pretty much like a lighter version of the Hog Heaven Barleywine.
The taste starts with a firm bite of resins and some lighter spicy notes. Juicy citrus character and sticky feeling toasted caramel malts keep things in check. Some light drying spice lingers past the finish for a good while. The mouthfeel is medium bodied overall, with a super easy and creamy feel to it. Hugely drinkable stuff here at only 4.4% that earns it's name as a "Session IPA".
I've been waiting a while to finally be able to try this and I was pleasantly surprised. Fairly hefty presence here for a sub 5% beer that combined with the generous amount of American hops, really did take this somewhere between an American Pale Ale and IPA. Quite the drinkable little hop fix.

On-tap at Blue Palms,
A: Pours amber with a thick white head, good retention, great lace.
S: Pine hops, pretty one-dimensional.
T: Biscuit malt mixed with a nice mix of earth, pine and cedar type hops, raw tasting.
M: Soft carbonation, medium-bodied, real light aftertaste.
D: Not a bad pale ale, I expected more, but it was adequate for quaffing.
