Avery's Maharaja is counted among my favorite DIPAs, so when I saw this AIPA offering, I was actually hesitant to get it, thinking it might be a bit of a let-down.
Still, I figure I'd taste and rate the beer on its own merit and not solely based on other, similar styles offered by the same brewer, so I gave this one a try. And because I could get it as another single 12 oz offering at Bristol Farms (Redondo Beach, CA), i figured why not give
I'm happy to say that I was not at all disappointed. I've found that Avery seems to have good solid offerings of the styles they brew, and this one was no exception.
Poured a bright golden amber with a creamy head, a finger or two wide. Aroma of citrus, more on the woodsy than spicy side, but pleasant, if not somewhat understated.
Taste is what you would expect of a solid AIPA with a nice, balanced hoppy bite. Not aggressive but not watered down in bitterness, nor too sweet to appeal to other tastes that tend towards a more malty brew.
All that combined with a pleasant mouthfeel makes for quite a drinkable brew.
