On draft at Beef and Brew in Geneva. Pale amber with about two fingers' worth of creamy white head; which leaves faint streaks of lacing as it retreats down the inside of the glass. There's a faint trace of grassiness with a touch of citrus on the nose, but not much else. On the palate that profile gets magnified. Herbaceous flavors dominate with citrus notes complimenting them, creating what I thought amounted to an overall Thai Lemongrass flavor. There's enough malt for balance, which with a medium body makes this easy to drink. The finish is far more crisp and clean than I was expecting, which makes this seem more like an IPL than an IPA

Poured from a single can, can't find a date on it -- it says 12/21/15 when the grocery store seemed to receive and label it (here in Beaumont, TX) and it says "Happy Anniversary Chef Blackwood!" on the bottom along with a series of numbers. Hoping "15321, B1" doesn't mean it was made almost a year ago in March, but I digress.

Color is straight up gold and honey colored. Much respect for the pretty, shiny lacing. Smell is muted like many from the style I've been trying recently, but this offering seems more clean than your average IPA. Some varied hops with none taking an edge, a pine here, resin there, maybe even a tad citrus.

I like the way it taste and it goes down mega smooth. Certainly drinkable, I could have 6 no questions asked. I detect a bit of barley and breadiness. It is an above average IPA in my opinion, nothing extremely mindblowing but a really good drinker. It does have a way of wetting the pallet and encouraging you to drink more, faster! Haha. Another good IPA - quickly becoming one of my favorite styles. Detecting a noticeable addition to my buzz -- cheers to Colorado.

had this on tap in a pint glass
pours golden to light amber with a smallish off white head
smells of citrus floral, malty and somewhat sour as well as it warmed
taste initially of malt and then citrus and caramel as well
feel is somewhat crisp and effervescent
overall this is a middle of the road ipa for me
i find i drink it in bars or restaurants that dont have a solid ipa line up
its not one i would seek out

Delicious! I love Avery, and this is a creamy, well-balanced, multi-dimensional IPA that hits all the right notes and hits them well.
A wonderful head supports a warming smell of bananas, bread, stone fruits, and something slightly sour and citrusy. The taste is equally well-balanced. The hops are mild but the flavor is strong. A bit sweet up front and the a hint of bitterness in the finish. It's a light, gentle IPA that doesn't try to overdo the hops, just use them in concert with the malt. I could easily drink a ton of this and enjoy it all the way. While there is nothing earth-shattering in here, there doesn't need to be - just a great, classic-style IPA that nails the balance and doesn't worry about extremes, which is a lot harder than just citra-hopping the hell out of it like many other beers do.

Pours a pale golden color with a frothy off white head leaning towards cream that leaves a nice trail of lace.

Smells of citrus, pine and floral hops. There is a touch of tropical fruit notes as well.

Taste is a thick resinous pine hop bite up front that leaves a sticky thick mouth feel as it flows towards bitter citrus and a touch of tropical fruit sweetness - mango, star fruit - that leads into a slight hit of bready malt. Finishes dry with lingering bitter/sweet notes.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a clear light amber, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like caramel malts, pine, and light grapefruit. It's not a super bold aroma, unfortunately.

This is only like 6.5% ABV, but it's some got a bit of booziness to it, which is perplexing and disappointing. There's a definite noticeable malt backbone, and it seems to be stronger than the hops themselves. The beer is too sweet, with very little hop flavor, only a bit of pine and grapefruit, which is typical. Pretty meh for me.

This is medium bodied, pretty crisp, but not incredibly so.

A lower tier IPA for sure, here.

not sure of the age of this beer. has a nice, typical american ipa look, decent malts and some hops on the nose. taste is the same. worth a try but not an ipa ill look for.

12-oz bottle into Belgian ale glass

A - cloudy golden body under a finger or two of white, moderate visible carbonation, nice lace

S - citrus, floral, hint of caramel, touch of grains

T - big citrus flavors (lemon & grapefruit), tropical fruits, touch of pine, touch of pepper, conspicuous bready malt, hint of caramel sweetness; well-balanced and delicious

M - smooth medium body, medium carbonation; very nice

O - Avery makes a very enjoyable IPA.

Poured from can into 16 ounce snifter.
Look: Very clear lighter color, no pulp.
Smell: Very earthy with lots of citrus.
Taste: Immediate grapefruit, with lots of citrus. Very bitter up front, sits on the tongue well.
Feel: Fills your mouth, very crisp.
Overall: Great IPA would highly recommend, if you don't like bitter grapefruit to your beer this ones not for you.

Poured slowly from can into tulip glass...

L: Effervescent, gorgeous and slightly opaque amber, with a thick and frothy two-finger head.

S: Heavy on the citrus and tropical notes ... melon, papaya, grapefruit, fruit juice blend. Slightly perfumey lingering notes.

T: Big citrus burst of grapefruit and mango with bitterness of melon rind, followed by notes of honey and slight caramely finish. Great balance.

F: Great mouthfeel ... crisp and tingles the tongue, but a little creamy as it lingers.

O: An excellent, citrus-forward IPA that has the character to distinguish it from its competitors.

Quick review since I had it on the go.

Look - Pours a murky sunset golden with a head that is very frothy and creamy that retains exceptionally well though doesn't leave any lacing. huh.

Smell - Highly malted with a bit of pungent hoppyness and some floral aspects.

Taste - Grapefruits piths with a whole hell of a lotta malt and a tiny speck of onions on the swallow.

Feel - very creamy and full, low carbonation and swallows easily.

Overall - Not too shabby. Could use a bit less malt.

Clear, copper color, very clear. Thinner slightly taupe head. Soapy and sticky looking head, lovely lacing. Very IPA-like smells; whole come hops, piney smells, resin and full aroma malts. Exactly how an IPA should smell. Taste, too, classic all-American IPA. Bold hops and a light, counter-balancing malt sweetness. Bitter, but not abuzzsaw. Sweet, but not cloying. Clean finish with the right amount of lingering bitterness. Medium-light body, subdued carbonation.

A well,-rounded IPA. Good intro to the style. Just nothing spectacular. Solid beer.

Pours a golden orange color, with about 2 fingers worth of white head. leaves a nice lacing.

smells oranges growing on a pine tree!

taste starts off with big citrus, followed by pine. A strong malt back bone supports the hops and balances everything out.

Very drinkable. A great example of an IPA.

Nice golden color. Pale white/yellow head. Tall with good persistence. Moderately fine.

Smells ok, fine, nothing special: hoppy, bitter; fits with the beer.

Very bitter, really hoppy, not especially complex. Nothing wrong with it, but not great.

Really nice mouthfeel. Rich on the tongue, perfectly carbonated, light and fine.

Finish is nice, complex, citrus, lemon.

Very decent beer but not a favorite, no hurry to re-try this one.

Pours brilliant gold under a white foam cap. Very piney aromas with grass, herbs and mint. Fruit palate emphasizes citrus with pine and herbal hops over light grain. Medium body and carbonation. Very drinkable and refreshing.

Draft for $6 a pint at Clarkston Union in Clarkston, Michigan.

Unfortunately, I had this after a Stone Ruination 2.0, so I may be rating this unfairly. This most simply is a solid IPA that won't blow you away, as the rating would suggest. There's a nice pine and "dank" quality to this beer with a relatively dry and bitter (yet clean?) finish. Definitely not a very "juicy" IPA, but there are some mild mango sorts of flavors in there. A very "safe" tasting IPA that doesn't break down any walls, but it's a more than respectable effort from Avery, and packs a pretty decent punch in terms of flavor. Quite good.

from a 6 week old single into an imperial pint

A: clear orange-golden with a tight 1 finger off-white head
S: bready caramel malty sweetness married to some round fruity citrus, melon and floral hops.
T & M: malts are a little lighter than in the nose, and while they provide a nice balance and some sweetness, this is mainly about the hops which contribute a lot of flavor that follows the nose and gives it some prickly punch on the back end. A little soapy, too. The combination of flavors isn't ideal for me, but I don't think there's any question that these guys know what they're doing...it is very well made. Medium to high carbonation for the style, moderate body, dries out at the end.

Wouldn't turn down another...not quite as delicate but putting that aside, does this remind anyone else of Two Hearted?

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/16/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear deep golden color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately crisp/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice IPA. All around good complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Due to the high rating, I have tried this beer multiple times, to rule out bad batches, shipping malfunction etc. Nope: Every time it smells & tastes badly skunked.

Bottle. Forgot to check date. Pours a mostly clear orange with a nice head and lacing in the glass. Aroma and flavor both feature moderate orange-rind character. It's a solid effort, but it leaves me wanting a little more hop aroma and flavor.

Pours a cloudy golden haze. Half a finger head that sticks around practically downto the last sip. Good bite, bitter but, has a decent citrus tone to balance it out. Good bready finish. Personally I seek more citrus tones in an IPA but, overall a solid brew. Wouldn't buy one at the bar but would get some to take home.

Fantastic beer. Pours golden with orange hue, a bit cloudy. Well balanced bready, yet citrusy and floral mix with rich, malty finish present you with one hell of a drinkable goodness. Obviously not everyone will like it so much, but this ONE is on top of my list. Cheers!

Great rocky mountain head, no pun intended. The head is marvelous, really nice foam. As you clear the glass the lacing looks like a snow storm. Very sticky. Unable see through the glass, outstanding! Nice orange hue. Sweet esters to the nose, and a very assertive malt backbone. Very smooth IPA. Very enjoyable to drink. Will be purchasing again!

Pours a straw color with a finger of head. Hoppy citrus nose. Lightly malty with a nice hoppy finish.

The body is not up to par but the flavor is pretty darn good.
