Recent tasting on tap at City Tap House, Philly, PA

Hazy, golden-orange pour with a small cap of white head that retained well and laced the glass. Crisp hop aroma, pine and citrus, with some bready malts coming through. Actually quite malty in the taste up front, but pleasant and not overly sweet, mid-palate quickly brought in a rush of crisp hops, orange rind and pine, for a lasting bitterness that took the edge off the obvious malt base. Medium body, crisp, fresh mouthfeel. Quite a solid IPA overall.

Here’s hoping this is a mini-Maharaja; that beer was incredible.

Brewed four months before the date of this tasting (January 14, 2013).

A: Slightly cloudy body with a yellow-orange hue, adorned with an inch of crisp tan head. Though there’s very little retention, a web of intricate lacing does remain after a few drinks.

S: Rustic and balanced in the nose; earthy straw and grass blend with a lemon hoppiness. There’s a subdued pine quality beneath, suggesting that this might be a different beer if it came from a fresher bottle. Finishes with a scent of caramel apple.

T: A sharp and hoppy palate, focusing on coarse bitters – a peppery, piney, even oniony taste, spicy and tongue-splitting, even in age. The grain bill is a more syrupy than the nose would lead you to believe, dripping out a grounded complex of molasses and thick honey, with supporting notes of burnt sugar and bark. A dry aftertaste mixes with the thick sugars like bitter medicine, but only just; it’s mainly your standard West Coast hop finish, markedly astringent.

M: Each sip grants your tongue a sticky syrupiness, pushing this to the thick side of low-alcohol beer. Low carbonation accentuates the syrupy texture.

O: It seems that this beer was not able to find a happy medium; I had a hard time determining whether I should be sipping or sessioning, and so I ended up not really satisfied. But the hophead in me loves that lingering bite after each sip, so I can’t complain too much – it really is a good beer, one that’s stood up to more age than it should have.
