Pours black with a one finger tam head, great retention, the lace keeps clinging to glass and leave a good amount of residue, I always like it when beers do that
The coffee aroma is very strong and is almost the only thing I can smell, toffee, chocolate and licorice are certainly playing second to the onslaught of coffee, that being said I find the coffee to be pleasant ant the other aromas are a great accent. Caramel aroma is also pleasant and was only apperant after the beer warmed for bit.
Chocolate and coffee flavors are very strong, great coffee like bitterness follows, this stout is like a hammer to me, it's not that complex but full of a flavor punch nonetheless, the alcohol is well masked despite being above 16% and the strong flavor I think help to mask the power of this brew
Mouthfeel is almost syrupy but the amount of carbonation in my bottle is a nice contrast to the heavy flavors of the beer, it's certainly a sipping beer but at such a high abv I wouldn't expect much else.

Appearance is a deep dark brown with a finger of tan head that enjoyed some good retention and left nice thick lace behind. Roasted malts abound in both the nose and the flavor profile. The finish is a touch too astringent and puts a damper on an otherwise exceptional offering. There is a slight alcohol presence, but considering the ABV, it is very mild and unobtrusive.

12oz 2011 vintage into a snifter.
dark, thick black pour with a slight beige head. smell is actually quite subdued..slight sweetness perhaps. the taste starts out a tad sweet...and is incredibly smooth. this is almost like a cross between a stout and barleywine. ABV not really apparent either. but you feel it quick. very malty on the finish. dark fruits...big big beer. full bodied. mild carbonation.
overall an interesting and very tasty hybrid beer.
