2010 (brewed 10/2/10, 16% ABV) and 2011 (brewed 11/12/11 15.1% ABV) side-by-side at Churchkey in DC for the Avery Tap Takeover. 2010 was $6.50 for a 4oz pour, 2011 was $6.
A: This had a way better head than 2011, brown pour with small lacing and good retention. 4
S: Balanced aroma. Booze, chocolate, coffee. The coffee is really the focal point, which surprises me considering the age. 4.5
T: The taste is a continuation of the smell. Just a ton of coffee on the backend. Chocolate beforehand and booze. So much coffee, how did they manage to keep it fresh? 4.5
MF: Heavy body, creamy, dry finish, and a bit boozy. 4
O: I really enjoyed this a lot more than the fresh 2011 vintage. It's better in basically every aspect. Very tasty 4.5
A: Black pour with less head than the 2010. Head is brown and is without lacing. 3.5
S: Boozy, nearly medicinal smell. Chocolate and not a lot of coffee. Very sweet, bordering on strange, smell. Amazed at the difference a year does to the aroma. 3.5
T: Ton of booze on the taste, way too much. The coffee on the finish tries to balance it out, but it falls short. The chocolate and balance needs some time to develop. 3.5
MF: Medium body, medium carbonation, creamy and full of alcohol. 4
O: Not as good as 2010. To unbalanced and all over the place. I will say, however, that for 16% ABV it wasn't bad. 3
I'll keep the overall review as the fresh vintage, as that is how the brewery released the beer. However, I highly recommend aging this monster.

Appearance: Black. Dark brown head that goes away quickly. Bottle has a great label and is trimmed with red foil.
Smell: Chocolate and Coffee. The alcohol makes its presence know as well.
Taste: Boozy. Wonderful chocolate flavor with some sweetness. I pick up more of the coffee as well as some bitterness on the finish. The Alcohol is in your face on the fist taste, but fades a bit once your palate becomes more accustomed to it.
Mouthfeel: Full. Maybe a bit oily.
Overall: Terrific Beer! Although a bit upfront with the alcohol, the flavor makes this one a definite must try.

This beer is a beast! the monster clocks in at 15.5% ABV and it hides it pretty well. The beer is thick as motor oil, has a subtle roasty taste combined with cocoa and maybe molasses. If you are a stout lover you have to visit this beer. Avery has done an outstanding job with this mega brew!
Bottom Line: Darn good stout!
