Kudos to fellow BA aschwab who, on a visit to Colombia, brought over a dozen beers for me, among which this brown ale (first of the dozen).
beautiful beer in all. I poured it into my duvel tulip as one of my favoured glasses for tastings (in retrospect, would rather have used my brand new american pint glass brought by- you got it- mr aschwab as well.
Obviously it shocked me to see it is much darker than it seemed on the bottle (and even given the bottle is very dark itself. The beer is hardly brown, rather black (i hardly see colours anyway so what do i know) and seriously non-translucid although it is not opaque or thick in itself. the head is very generous and tan but fadedrather quickly leaving behind a considerable amount of lacing.
Smell doesn't right off "fill the room" but is quite intense. off the bat, I would say dark chocolate, but i mean the actual cacao paste in its raw, non-sweet sense. further along, the hops are unmissable and quite the staple of most american beers i know. there's an unhealthy obsession with how those bitter pellets affet nose and mouth, and i like it.
Taste is also defined bty this for the most part. not an average brown ale by any means- at least not to par with others i know- but a reinvented, more (yes, again) american style. Strongly smoked, hardly sweet at all, the hops are abundant and blunt, and are closer to the beginning of the taste than the after(taste). roasty malt and somewhat red wine-ish at times, but for the better part a discrete but very pleasant bitterness. flavourful and refreshing i think. medium bodied, not too heavy to make it wintery but not too light to limit it otherwise.
In all another good american beer, I'll put it on my grocery list next time in the states.
