Cellared for 3 years. Poured into a goblet.

Beautiful rich dark amber color.

This is a nice winter ale, with a lot of depth of flavor. I like that there are no spices as some beers go a little overboard with this in their winter warmers.

I cannot note a discernable change over previous years, but it's till great.

It's easy drinking, not particularly heavy, so the 8.3% can sneak up on you.

12oz bottle dated purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA
*Notes taken on 12/26/13 to my Sierra Nevada balloon glass

A: Dark mocha brown body dense with some visible carbonation and a few floaties present. There forms a thin film of khaki across the top that dissipates out to a small swirl in short time. Some small dotting and a few splashes of lace adhere to the glass upon each drink.

S: Caramel malts with light chocolate hazelnut and a bit of dark cherry fruit. The nose has a touch of earthy roast to it and a dash of alcohol spice coming through as well. All in all a very nice malt complexity to the aroma.

T: Tastes malty and rich with caramelized fig, candied prunes, dark toffee, spiced chocolate, and just a hint of roast coffee bean. There is some earthy root flavors coming through with more dark berry and hints of tobacco. The beer is somewhat sweet but drying with a moderate peppery bitterness across the palate. Alcohol is well disguised with only a minor warming sensed. Pretty solid stuff.

M: Moderately filling the beer is actually a touch on the thinner side. Lightened by the bitterness and drying lift towards the finish. Mild alcohol warmth and a clean exit.

D: I do like me a good warmer and this is a fairly nice one. Has some great robust layers of malty goodness while maintaining a lighter more sessionable body. Would have again.
