Nose: dark bread, nuts, dark dried fruit
Pours brilliant garnet under a 1" quickly dissipating off-white foam cap.
Palate: bread, grainy malts, nuts, dark dried fruit, light bitter hop accent on the finish. Long lingering aftertaste of malt and hop. Dried fruit flavors not as well developed as the malt flavors.
Full body, medium low carbonation.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass.

A- Pours a medium brown color with an 1/8 inch light tan head then settles at a thin ring that outlines that glass and a moderate amount of surface foam. Extremely resilient spackled lacing.

S- Bold, semi-musty roast with milk chocolate notes. Alcohol makes its way through the aroma bringing a sherry-like characteristic. Caramel sweetness.

T- Roasted malt that's not so heavy and works well with the booze that's also not so heavy which leads to a very comforting flavor in the taste and feeling. Slightly bitter with notes of caramel, milk chocolate and a bit of honey. Tastes almost like a toned down barleywine which I like.

M- Creamy and viscous while providing that thick afterfeel of residue on the tongue. Medium carbonation and a lofty body.

O- I've been seeking this one out for a while and, now that I've found it, the waiting was all worth it. Such a smooth, balanced old ale with complexity and a subtle sweetness that makes this an excellent example of the style for me.

This is a complex ale that I always look forward to, year after year.
This review is based on recent on-tap and cask versions that
I've had in the last few days at the Avery tap room.

It's a very dark, porter-ish color with extensive lacing and a dark creamy white head.

The aromas are complex also. The smokiness is very prevalent; maybe from the malts or what. There is almost a coffee smell as well. And, of course, plenty of spice to meet its "winter seasonal" designation.

All the smells come through in the flavor; the smokiness smooths everything out while the spice livens things up. And, like a lot of
Avery ales, the hops keeps the bitterness at the front of the tongue.

The creamy head and the smoothness already mentioned, followed by the hoppy bitterness makes this one of my favorite winter seasonals. The alcohol adds to the overall complexity; great for any cold evening.

A- dark drown, almost black in color. Sort of a mahogany color. The head is fairly light, it seams as though the beer is not as big and as bad as it really is.

S- the aroma is nutty with the aroma of roasted malts and barley. Notes of vanilla are detected.

T- super balanced across the board. I taste a balanced malt flavor. Toasty and fresh. It taste dry and the alcohol sort of sneaks up on you. The hops are present, but are not up front.

M- very balanced. I have had many beers in the past that I have said are balanced. This beer is awsome. Not many beers are as complex and balanced as this one.

D- delicious.

Very deep almost opaque ruby body. Good retention and lace. Full range of bubbles in the light brown head.
Strong sweet malts, burnt caramel and mild hops make up a very pleasant smell.
Strong chocolate and caramel malts almost burning sweet but well balanced once into the aftertaste of caramel malts and powerful hops. Quite tasty.
Moderate to full body, smooth and good coating. Dry finish.
This is one very drinkable winter brew.

Appearance: On top is an off white head around a finger thick. Beneath that is a deep amber beer with some light copper hues.

Aroma: Very bready in the nose with a good touch of toffee. Raisins, dark fruit, twinges of citrus in the back.

Taste: Lots of toffee notes sticky mouthfeel. Molasses in the front, notes of licorice, very malty backbone.

Notes: A great malty backbone mixed in with good drinkabilty and quite good for a cold night. Cheers.

Midnight brown with amber around the edges and a decent head. Looks about right for the style. Smells a lot maltier than other warmers I've been enjoying lately! Almost barleywine or doppelbock level. I like that. Not a whole lot of hop, but it's still a nice rich smell.

Tastes even better! Packs way more punch than I thought it would. Beautifully balanced with dark fruity richness backing up the bright spiciness ... OK I just checked the label for the first time. No spices! 5 different kinds of malts. Wow. A very delicious and interesting winter ale indeed.

Smooth and full mouthfeel, The strong abv is apparent but not harsh. At the time of this review, Ol' Jubey is at the top of the list for this style (that's why I shelled out the $9 for a 6er) Overall this is probably the most unique winter warmer I've tried and a damn fine ale.
