12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Bottle cellared for one year.
A: Pours a muddled brown color with lighter burnt Siena hues. Somewhat murky. Khaki colored head settles quickly. Spotty lacing.
S: crust, toast, dark caramel, pinch of cocoa. Very earthy with hop scents of pine, spicy garden herbs, and wet leaves.
T: Caramel. Lots of dark toast and crust. Cocoa and nutty chocolatey tastes build. Pitted fruits, such as dates and plums. Hops are assertive and bring spicy herbal notes, pine, and an overall earthy tone. Flash of citrus. Cocoa, chocolate, and nutty tastes mingle with earthy and oily hops on the long finish.
M: Medium thick body. Rich and creamy with a bit of heft in the mouth. Surprisingly high hop astringency, though it isn't a bother. Comforting alcohol warmth.
O: The assertive hopping was a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one. This beer perfectly fits its winter seasonal role. Rich, robust, and warming. No need to kill a beer like this with spices. A pleasure to sip, and an excellent buy at an approachable price in the six pack. Cellars very well to boot.
