A thick dark brown black color with a healthy light brown head and a solid cascade of spider web lacing on the pint glass. The aroma offers deep pomegranate malt and licorice along with some chocolate prune. Really top notch. The flavor starts with a tart lime that marries easily with the deep licorice malt and prune ideas that came through in the first nose hit. And again I can identify some chocolate as well as orange and fig. Just a taste treat that obviously didn't lose anything after sitting for a few years. The body is near full with a slick feel that's well short of being too syrupy. Goes down pretty easily for a big beer but you'll want to make it last. Awesome stuff.

22oz bottle poured into a goblet. This beer has been in my cellar for a long time. Six years old, I suppose, seeing as Twenty dropped recently. Let's see if it held up.

A: Pitch black on the pour. One finger of beige head settles into a thin slip after a short time. A thin, delicate ring of lacing remains on the glass.

S: Deep notes of dark chocolate and black cocoa powder. Dry, cake-like brownies and tootsie rolls. Grape-like candi sugar. Soft and subtle yeasty spice builds as the beer warms. Brown sugar and faint cinnamon and clove. A hollow, leafy hop scent has been all but lost with the time.

T: Chocolatey up front with tastes of tootsie rolls, dry brownies, and black cocoa powder. Chocolate truffles. Brown molasses. Candi sugar brings a distinct raisin taste. This gets wrapped up in all the chocolate, and the marriage is a beautiful one. Plum and black raspberry round out a fruity center. As in the nose, the yeast brings mellow spice: Faint clove and cinnamon are almost lost. Perhaps a dash of pepper. Brown sugar. Slight papery/cardboard oxidation, but that's to be expected at this age. Absolutely no trace of alcohol despite the high abv. Any hop taste ironed itself out long ago. Dry chocolatey and yeasty finish.

M: Full mouthfeel, body is on the thick side but not weighty. Filling and somewhat chewy. Candi sugar and high attenuation keep it from being heavy and viscous. Scrubbing carbonation provides some lift too.

O: Having not had this beer fresh, I can only speculate as to what it was like younger. It has definitely held up to the time, but at six years it seems that it may have lost a step or two. Particularly in the hops department. As it stands it was a solid drink, but man do I wish I could taste this fresh, when the dry hopping was still apparent.

Not sure if it was my fault or what, but this thing gushed. Maybe just shaken up.

Pours really dark red with four fingers tan head, bunch of sediment too.

Smell is like a barleywine but lighter, coco, malt, red fruit, really complex,

taste is a bit stale, but very complex, bitter, coco, espresso, molasses, some fruit flavor too, interesting beer for sure.

Steady carbonation with a pale tan head. Nice lacing for a 6.5. The label reads "A very Dark, Different, Dry-Hopped Ale."

Aromas stand out from the start with licorice & chocolate. the taste has more of licorice, bittersweet chocolate and very ripe cherry + sweet malts & dark fruits of raisins & figs. The temperature rising increases the intensity of the chocolate. Partially due (I imagine) from the yeasts opening their doors in welcoming the flood of burnt sugar, syrupy bitter chocolate and fruit. Carbonation dissipated somewhat, but kept teasing to the final sip. Tasted with 2 brewers & general manager from Morgantown Brewing Company, WV.

Finally decided to open this one - Avery's anniversary beer from 2007

Murky soft brown body that shows little to no activity. A finger of pale tan head retains rather well and produces decent lacing and beading beneath.

Chocolate, licorice and rotten cherry. Dark, sweet malts and red fruits... brownie and Belgian yeast. The alcohol seemed rather potent upon first opening the bottle, but it's more smoothed out than I had initially thought - there is still a bit of heat though on the tail end of it.

Dessert fruits, chocolate syrup, some papery sweetness... a little chalky but it doesn't seem to detract from the overall drinkability of the beer. A little medicinal in the finish but it's rounded out by a sense of syrupy fruit presence.

Very interesting stuff. Give it a whirl if you're interested.

Bottle (2007)

Dark brown throughout with no clarity. The edges are a very dark ruby. The head is tightly bubbled, moderately sized, and light brown in color. The beer leaves ribbons of sticky lace down the glass. Gorgeous.

The aroma is a divine combination of dark fruits, namely smashed, juicy raisins. Along with the raisins are some fig and sweet date aroma, but the raisin character is abundant, along with a bit of cocoa powder. As a raisin lover, this is right up my alley, and this nails it. There's minimal yeast presence; it's all (dark) fruit.

The flavor is dark fruit forward, similar to the aroma, with raisins and fig leading the way, along with bittersweet, though rich, chocolate, some graham cracker, mild yeast character, and low bitterness. The flavor of chocolate-covered raisins lingers on and on long after the swallow.

Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation.

This is why I drink beer. The needles in the haystack that blow you away make this hobby as fun, interesting, and exciting as it is. Cheers and thanks again, Cory!

2007 22oz bottle enjoyed on 3/16/12.

Appearance: Very dark brown with a fluffy light tan head that maintains its presence. Sitcky lacing on the sides of the snifter.

Smell: Strong scent of dark fruits, and that candied sugary sweetness one expects from a dark Belgian.

Taste: Starts out with a strong malt sweetness and progresses to a roasty flavor that is delicious. Subtle chocolate notes became more noticeable to me as session went on. Finish is a pleasant, muted hop bitterness that I sure would have been much more forward if it was new. Spicy and warm as it goes down. Very interesting and not the same flavors for each sip.

Mouthfeel: Very little carbonation and light to medium bodied. The finish was dry and chalky.

Overall: Probably past its prime, but still a high quality beer from Avery. Super drinkable, looked forward to the different layers of flavor, and can really only dock it heavily for the chalky texture.

22 oz. from 2007 poured into a snifter. Was going to hold onto it for a bit longer, but read some of the reviews on here on how the age is showing, so I figured I may as well drink it now.

A: Beautiful dark brown liquid with a nice, one finger tan head.

S: Primarily dark fruits. There's even a little hint of a tropical fruits.

T: Immediate shot of roasted malts, followed by sweet, dark fruits. After the fruit subsides a bit, the roasted malt comes back, finishing it off. The entire taste is sort of enveloped in a mild hop flavor. It's a nice mix of stout, BSDA, and a bit of pale ale (from the hops.) It's a very nice combination. No alcohol taste, which is interesting considering it's almost 9.5%.

M: This is where this beer really excels. There is a nice bit of carbonation, but it's amazingly smooth as it goes down.

O: This is really just an amazing beer. It has the great dark fruit taste of a BSDA, a nice robust roasted malt flavor near the end, and all supported by a great hop taste. The mouthfeel is legendary. It's really, really amazing. Light carbonation tingles the taste buds and the beer just effortlessly slides down the throat, leaving a trail of warmth behind.

This beer stands out and transcends classification.

It's a shame they don't brew this anymore. If you run across it, I implore that you acquire it!

Poured a nice dark brown color with a dusty brown 1/4' head of lace. I was surprised that this still had some nice carbonation to it.

Smells were dark dried fruit (raisins and dates) and some nice roasted malt aromas. Slight estery alcohol notes in the background.

Taste was sweet and fruity upfront but then there was a chalky flavor right before the roasted malts took over. It was off putting and didn't really allow me to focus on the rest of the chocolatey bitterness in the finish. Alcohol warmth in the finish.

Mouthfeel was thick and syrupy. Had a nice way of coating the palate and the little bit of carbonation it still had was a nice touch.

I never had this beer fresh but it taste pretty good now except for the chalky taste I described. Seems like it could take atleast 1 more year in the bottle.

This is my 200th review and what a great choice it was.

Look: Dark brown with a light brown ring around the edges and a 1/2 inch head and ok retention with some spotty lace and visible yeast

Smell: Dark fruits in full abundance raisin plums dates and figs

Taste: Upfront it taste like a chocolate covered raisin and finishes with copious amounts of chocolate. I do not taste any hops and it says dry hopped but that is probably due to the age

Mouthfeel: Creamy buttery and velvety. Low carbonation and medium to full body

Overall: I am blown away by how good this beer is right now I do not remember what it tasted like fresh but I do not remember it being half this good. So damn good

Dark walnut color with a surprisingly lively 2cm head tan head. Medium retention and lacing. Visible yeast.

Huge sweet dark nose. Big dark fruit like liquored plums, raisins and dates and a mild chocolate note.

Flavor is bold, rich and sweet. It's tastes exactly like chocolate covered raisins to me. That's is The Only and best way to describe it.

Creamy, oily and viscous mouthfeel with low carbonation.

Overall it was surprisingly much better than I had anticipated after being bottled 4 years ago. Conditioned and maintained really well. Very much a dessert beer now in my opinion.

Thanks to cbutova for breaking this out, I've never heard of this beer, from 2007.

Pours very dark brown, slight highlights, visible flecks. Nice beige head retains well and leaves some lace, great considering the age.

Scent shows it's age a little bit...pure metal/pennies at first but improves alot with warmth, smell reminds me of an old ale, aged caramel sweetness.

Tastes similar to an old ale as well, surprised to see this categorized as a Belgian. Dusty chocolate, old caramel, molasses, a bit of toffee, dark fruit, some oxidation there too. No hop flavor to speak of but the bitterness is there.

Pretty good mouthfeel, no booze, good carbonation for a 4-year old beer.

Probably a bit past it's prime at this point but it's held up pretty good considering.

Been meaning to taste this one for at least two years now, finally took it out last night.

A- Very dark brown body with some red around the edges. Impessive creamy tan head, great size and retention. Tons of lace rings.

S- Age has taken over. Very oxidized and deep old ale caramel forward. Tons of strange things going on from oxidation, cardboard, pennies, dog hair. With some time it evens out to a dark fruit, caramel old ale overall.

T- Again, a ton of age presence. Old ale caramel and stale oxidation as well as some nice fruit, oak vanilla, raisins and nutty spice hints.

MF- Silky moderately thick body with a nice creamy feel and moderate carbonation.

I would say this is past it's prime. The oxidation is really showing and I can't see anything new and great coming up.

Bottled in 2007. This 22 oz. bomber has been sitting in my "cellar" for almost 5 years. I can't wait to try this beer.

Black, dark brown , and ruby colors abound with sediment, but an awesome tan head that maintatins throughout all 22 ozs. and has great lacing and a thick foam.

Leathery and roasty in simple flavor upfront. The taste develops to somthing almost smokey. The dry hopping adds a musty flavor and texture to the beer, like when you walk into an old house for the first time. Theres old coffee, dry chocolate, and but lots of character in every sip.

I'm glad I aged this beer for as long as I did.

Thanks to benz08 for this one. It took me a while to break into it, but I'm glad I did. This is one amazing beer! When you pour it you swear that you've just poured an Imp Stout. It's dark, dark brown with a beige head that's super dense, 2 inches thick and made of tightly packed microbubbles. The carbonation is evident as the lees can be seen swimming around in there like those faux mermaids in that roadside tourist trap in Florida (don't remember the name). The bands of lacing left behind are only broken by the beer flowing to your waiting maw. It's not often I get to use the word "maw", so bear with me. The ABV here is well over 9% so it should make this review interesting as I'm almost finished the bomber in less than 15 minutes.

The smell is remarkable: mostly milk chocolate from the malts with a hint of coffee and even licorice. The hops throw off some citrus and the whole shebang works together to make for a feast for your nose. Will the taste stand up?

Oh yes it does. The first sip sucker punches me with a wallop of booze...just like a Belgian-style stout or the strongest of Imp Stouts...but then the malts start to take over. Yes, they bill this as a "very Dark, Different, Dry Hopped Ale" so Juan would think that the hops would be the star but Juan would be wrong. The malts are throwing off acrid coffee notes, bitter chocolate and even some dark fruits (prunes, which they now call dried plums because if Juan thinks "prune", Juan thinks "old, decrepit people who can't take a crap). Oh but we were just talking about the malts, "What about those hops?", Juan would ask. Well Juan, they're contributing as well with some citrus in the form of grapefruit. Okay, right about now Juan might ask. "All of those flavor must certainly make for one mess of a brew, right?" Wrong again Juan! Somehow Avery has managed to throw together elements of an Imp Stout, a Belgian Quad and an American IPA and made it work! How these guys successful blur then lines of the style guide every year for their anniversary is beyond me. Perhaps they've sold their soul to the ghost of Michael Jackson, but whatever they did it was worth it.

Oh yeah, mouthfeel: a little chalky, but still pretty smooth. Medium in body even though Juan would think it would be heavier. Again, Juan would be wrong. The dark malts and the hops deliver a double-barrel shot to the taste buds of bitterness. The bottle says the IBUs come in at 60 and that seems about right. Even though you're getting a double-pronged attack it's not overwhelming. The alcohol is not all that well hidden but with all the flavors in this brew you really don't mind. It might have turned out a bit too sweet if not for the bitterness and the alcohol. It does seem that malt load was massive.

Yes, I've finished the whole bottle (please, no more "interventions", I'm fine!) and I'm still typing and not face down on my keyboard, shorting it out with my drool. I'm pretty sure in the future that the thought of this beer will activate the salivary glands and drool will be a distinct possibility. It's a shame that I will never taste its like again. Go away Juan, you bother me. And what is it that your brother Jose sees by the dawn's early light?

Thanks to Thirstybird for sharing. Pours a dark brown with a thin, off-white head. Nose reveals dark fruit, cocoa, sour milk, a nutty quality and a trace of booze. Taste is ashy and malty with the addition of raisins and figs. Mouthfeel is medium-light, with an even carbonation. Not bad, but in my opinion, this beer is slightly past its prime and on its way downhill.

The folks over at Avery jokingly described this as a "Dubbel IPA" and on the label "a very dark, different, dry-hopped ale." Yeah, fuck beer styles!

A somewhat typical Belgian nose, in that it's soft with some sweet suggestions; a bit malty and spicy, but interestingly herbal with alcohol and some floral and orange scents going on--think Grand Marnier. Silky smooth and incredibly creamy, blissful on the palate. You can feel it gently glide down the throat with a trailing alcohol burn--very warming and spicy. Maltiness is rich and complex, with flavors that literally pop and meld: tastes of brownies, ripe and juicy fruits, roasted nut butter, molasses, honey, black treacle, plus a semi-burnt raisin note. Hops get a bit resiny, with some major herbal action going on and a nice citrus smack on the backside. Black pepper. Faint vegetal; raw and leafy at times. Orangey. Roasty finish, a bit coffee-like. Dry.

Intricate doesn't even begin to describe this beer. Todd's wife, Candice (aka Cfahooligan), says this is probably one of Avery's best beers ever. We'll agree and leave it at that. Pairing? Here's your next barbecue beer.

Pour is a dark brown good head. Smell and taste are heavy malts, a bit sweet with molasses, figs, caramel and other dark fruits. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, perhaps a bit thin. Wouldn't go for it again, but I think I sat on it too long as the hops are faded. Approaching barleywine qualities now.

Pours a moderate brown color with a little bit of a red hue to it. Off white head with a few streaks of lace. Nose brings forward a cacophony of different scents, including raisins, dark fruit, booze, roasted malt, and a bit of dark rum. Taste pulls everything together quite well, accentuating the dark fruits and some sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Drinks really well and glad to try it when I did a few months back.

Dark brown, shot through with hints of red, capped off by a decent amount of beige foam. I get aromas of brown sugar, roasted malts, chocolate and pine. Good flavor; brown spices, dark fruits and molasses. A good, but not great, Belgian style dark strong ale.

Poured into a tulip. It pours a clear black with deep brown highlights. A thick creamy coffee head lingers and leaves sheets of lace. Aroma is deep bread and dark fruit. Raisins and a hint of banana. Chocolate and a hint of coffee. Taste follows with the roasted characters coming forward. I can't pick up any dry-hopped character in a brew this aged. Thick and creamy. Carbonation is a little prickly. For the finish the roasted bitterness incorporates a slight alcohol drying which can't come close to the balancing the mouth coating sweetness.

2007 22oz. bomber. Served cool room temp into a Duvel glass. Pours medium dark brown with a large light brown head that retains a cap down the glass, and leaves some nice clumps of lacing.

Big aroma starts with semi-sweet chocolate chips, heavy molasses, raisins, licorice, caramel, vanilla, a touch of hops and some spice.

Flavor is excellent, chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits, cherries, some hoppy bitterness, a touch of caramel and toffee, and some spice. Quite complex.

Mouthfeel is full and velvety with moderate carbonation. Alcohol taste is present, even with two years on the bottle, but it doesn't surprise me coming from Avery...they never try to hide the alcohol content of their brews, although the alcohol is certainly mellowing over time compared to when I had this fresh.

I really love Fourteen, out of the numerous Avery offerings I've tried, this is my favorite. Buy it if you can find it!

Poured from a bomber to a snifter.

A: Pours a very dark brown that appears black. Very large light-brown head with good retention and some web-like lacing.

S: Very sweet malts with lots of dark fruits (raisins, cherry and berries) with a bit of chocolate and some hops. Smells very good. Kinda has the smell of a barleywine more than a BSDA. I never would have guessed the style upon smell.

T: Just like the scent, lots of dark fruit, chocolate, molasses, maltiness and hops. Hits sweet and leaves a raisin taste on the finish with a note of chocolate and malt. Not as hoppy as it smells. I'm really loving the taste, but it's not very consistent with the style.

M&D: Mouthfeel is perfect, medium-heavy bodied with a great amount of carbonation, but not so much that it's distracting. It's pretty drinkable, the alcohol doesn't come out much. A bomber is perfect for one person.

Overall: Although it's not consistent with the style I really love this beer. It's very unique and hard to find these days. It's drinking great now, so get it if you can!

Pours a dark, opaque brown with a big creamy tan head that shows excellent retention and leaves some gorgeous lacing down the sides of the glass.

The aroma surprisingly still features a good bit of citrus hops up front but they've definitely given way to the hefty dark toasted malt backbone. Lots of dark fruit, chocolate and a bit of roasted coffee.

The taste is even sweeter with a lot of caramelized brown sugar pairing up with the dark chocolate malts to form a hefty backbone. The hops are not as prevalent as in the aroma though there's some orange zest up front before the sweet roasty malts kick in. The finish is slightly dry with more than a hint of booze and a slightly chalky toasted character through the aftertaste.

The body is fairly full with strong carbonation and sticky with molasses clinging to the tongue alongside the roasty bitterness.

This is a very good beer and one of the better efforts from Avery as far as I'm concerned. Very flavorful with tons of different things going on but coming together fairly well in the end.

Pours a very dark brown color with a tall, pillowy head that sticks around for a long while. Tons of lacing as well, it's a pretty beer.

Nose is of dark berries, cherries, alcohol, white bread, tobacco and molasses. Maybe a bit of faint hops, makes me think this one might have been pretty hoppy when fresh.

Complex brew here, it is bursting with all kinds of flavors. Mild chocolate, strawberry-like fruity esters, more alcohol and a grassy hop flavor and bitterness on the back end. Fairly full bodied, but is not exactly chewy on the mouthfeel. After warming the hops become even more apparent, impressive for it's age. A delicious beer that Avery should be proud of.
