Murky orange color with a smallish light khaki head. Fruity, sweet, and slightly spicey smell. Tangerine, apricot and peach come through in the aroma with a very subtle hop presence. This beer shows more fruit than more traditional Belgian goldens (interpret very loosely). Pale malts, peach, apricot, and a hint of orange are the governing flavors of this ale. There is definitely a sweetness imparted by candi sugar. Also, there is a very pleasant spiciness imparted by the hops. The beer is rather thick and lacks an effervescence and crispness that I expected. The mouthfeel is closer to a strong dark ale than a golden ale.

Poured into a snifter.

This is a true golden ale -- the appearance is a deep golden color, with a decent two fingers of off-white head. There is a pretty large amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle, that populates the glass in a minor way. Unfortunately some big chunks found their way into the glass near the end of the pour. The smell is of baking spices, booze, vanilla extract, dried apricot, washed potato, pear, molasses and brown sugar. The taste follows with nutmeg, clove, vanilla, peach, booze, dried figs, sweet apple, and potato skin. The mouthfeel compliments the spice character with its vibrant carbonation.

Overall, a very solid belgian-style golden that is a bit too spicy and boozy for its own good. Some age could probably mellow this one out, and hopefully bring out some of the more subtle fruit notes lurking below the surface of the more assertive characters in this beer.

Appearance: Pours dark gold in color. Streams of carbonation rush to the top of the glass. Inch of frothy white head that dissipates quickly but thin layer of head is retained for the length of the drink. Clear, no sediment. Looks delectable!
Smell: Sweet malts, caramelly. Hard to distinguish hop aroma. Distinctly belgian yeast; slightly funky, sweet and strong.
Taste: Sweet, slightly fruity (green apples?). Funky/musty taste characteristic of belgian yeast shines through but balanced well by the sweetness. Dangerously smooth for it’s strength.
Mouthfeel: Complex flavors lend to a full body, but the malts maintain lightness. Smooth start to finish. Medium carbonation. Alcohol taste lingers on the top of the mouth.
Overall: I’ve enjoyed this beer more times than I can count, on tap or bottled. It’s always a favorite, never disappointed. Accurate as a Belgian golden, but never boring for the palate!
