Poured from 22oz into tulip glass.
A: A very nice bright amber color with a good two finger head that recedes slowly down to about 1/4th finger by the time the tulip is empty, thankfully that is fixed by pouring the rest of the bottle into the glass. Lacing is moderate with small wisps of very fine bubbles hanging onto the sides.
S: For a Double IPA, it isn't as strong on the hops as one would expect, but they are still detectable along with pine and malt. There is absolutely no hint of alcohol in the nose.
T: With the faint hops that were detected in the nose, I was expecting a weak showing. While not "in your face" like some other DIPA's are, the hops are very well presented and counter balanced by the roasted malts and the alcohol which is detectable, but kept in line very well by the other things going on here.
M: The medium carbonation helps to keep the flavors alive and the alcohol does produce a little tingle, but by no means is this an overpowering or strong beer. The hops give a bitterness that leaves the mouth dry after swallowing, but in a pleasant way.
D: This is not a beer for sitting and watching sports. This is a beer to go with that Beef Wellington or Filet Mignon dinner your having, or to finish out the evening with. The IBU's and higher alcohol make this a brew that should be sipped and savored, not rushed through to get to the next beer. While not as powerful as other DIPA's, any Hophead will not be dissapointed.
