First review here, who better to start with than one of my favorite breweries that also shares my name? This is the first time though that I've had the new world porter.
Served in a pint glass at about 55 degrees.
Appearance - Very dark, appears black initially but shining a light through it reveals that it is actually a deep ruby red. Head is a tan color with tight bubbles. Carbonation maybe a tad much for the style? Head retention is excellent. Looks good enough to drink.
Aroma - Aroma is less than expected, just not very powerful at all. What is present is grainy and malty. Alcohol is also noticeable though just slightly. Some slight fruitiness as well, really reminds me of figs but lately everything reminds me of figs. Very little if any hop smell. Pleasing aroma, just wish there was more of it.
Flavor - Malty, roasty and toasty. Sweetness well balanced with bitterness. Grain and cereal flavors are forefront, with roasted malt bitterness and hops secondary. Very well balanced flavor. Alcohol is also detectable, adding a nice spiciness. A little more bitter than I'd expect from a standard porter, but for me that's a plus.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, carbonation is immediately noticeable on the tongue. Slightly creamy, smooth and pleasant, although again more carbonated than I would expect from a porter. Still not bad.
Overall - a very good beer! Another winner from Avery.

Is this for real? I haven't done a review of this beer i first started banging in the late 90s? Ok. So Avery is/was (I dunno Crooked Stave puts out some bangers nowadays) my favorite Colorado brewery, almost always good, cross section of styles, usually good quality and affordability.
This pours dark brown. Hits a 4/5" beige head, great retention. This is the porter appearance you were looking for. The aroma is entirely roasted malt and bittering hops. Just straight up "new world" porter territory.
Taste imparts roasted two row barley, light chocolate malt notes, light coffee from all that roasted malt notes. Runs around 55 ibu I would guess, bittering hops firm, yet not oppressive or dominating. This is like one of those super consistent and prototypical kind of new world/American porter recipes, tried and true. Its totally out of style in this era of dumping candy and shit into a dark beer where you sludge it up into Chicago pour territory. But if you want a great, traditional, no frills beer to bang yourself at 6/$10, you got yourself a deal right here.
