A-The porter pours a nearly impenetrable mahogany brown color. Pretty ruby highlights are visible on the outskirts of the liquid. A coffee ice-cream head forms then dies away leaving a slight frosting floating on the liquid. The beer leaves persistent lace all the way down my glass.
S-Reeks of black roasted malty deliciousness. A bouquet of nuts, coffee beans, and even light chocolate. But my favorite part of the nose is the sun-dried citrus hop scent that really makes this brew smell quite nice. I am quite happy with the nose.
T-Yes! As I had hoped, the hops are even more stressed in the flavor of the beer. The citrus hops unite with the dark roasty malts and make a tag team of tongue-battering excellence. This is a big beer. The intensity of the smells emanating from the nose are multiplied on the palate. I would love to try this one perfectly fresh on tap! This is one bold, assertive, lovely porter.
M-The feel of this beer is big. Heavier body combines with a slippery semi-thick feeling that settles well on the tongue. The carbonation is lively enough to be noticeable but not too intense.
O/D-The label reads "A pioneer black IPA" how can you not love that. I really love this brew. I know all the ratings on Beer Advocate are subjective, but this one is supremely undervalued. I love the hop injection into this style. I am loving porters more and more, and this one just raised the bar again. Very happy to have tried this precursor to the Black IPA.

Poured into a Libby Poter/Stout glass.
A - Extremely dark brown to black body. 1 Finger head that is a dark orange/creamy caramel color. Head dissipates after about a minute and leaves splotchy lacing that is still active with bubbles and a large amount of lacing around the edge of the glass.
S - Light caramel, cooked orange , coffee, butter, vanilla, creamy, reminds me of a stout smell more than a porter, along the lines of a guiness. Hints of hops.
T - Starts incredibly creamy, once again reminded me of a guiness, but it followed with a spiciness like pepper and orange rind. Ends with moderate coffee and hop notes. Really nice flavor.
M - Starts off very full and rich, which I enjoy. Turns into mild acid, but is always accompanied by a creamy and bubbly lacing.
O - A very, very good beer, and one of the best porters I've ever had. I bought this beer from one of my favorite places because it was on sale. I was not expecting something this great for how much I paid for it, and I might go back and grab some more that were on sale.
