eager to try this "new world" take on a porter. the beer pours a dark, dark brown with a light tan head in my sam adams glass. nose hits you with roasted malts, chocolate, and toffee primarily, with lesser notes of some floral hops hiding in there. taste is malty up front, then fades into some hop bitterness; i suppose this is where the black ipa side comes out. not as rich and mouth filling as a porter - somehow i was expecting more in the department. a good brew all around, though i would say definitely more of a dry porter than a black ipa.

Served in a pint glass.

Appearance: Thin body that is almost an opaque brown tinted brown body. Head is just a notch under a fnger's length coming off naturally tan.

Smell: Light hop scent accompanied by coffee.

Taste: Light but bitter chocolate feel with hints of caramel. Not exactly sweet but definitely satisfying.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, barely sticky but nice after-taste. More on your smoother side. For a porter a little light.

Overall: Not a bad brew an for you newbie beer drinkers that are looking for a very good "starter" or go-to dark beer this one is it. Packs flavor and loves you back. Salud!

Poured into a Libby Poter/Stout glass.

A - Extremely dark brown to black body. 1 Finger head that is a dark orange/creamy caramel color. Head dissipates after about a minute and leaves splotchy lacing that is still active with bubbles and a large amount of lacing around the edge of the glass.

S - Light caramel, cooked orange , coffee, butter, vanilla, creamy, reminds me of a stout smell more than a porter, along the lines of a guiness. Hints of hops.

T - Starts incredibly creamy, once again reminded me of a guiness, but it followed with a spiciness like pepper and orange rind. Ends with moderate coffee and hop notes. Really nice flavor.

M - Starts off very full and rich, which I enjoy. Turns into mild acid, but is always accompanied by a creamy and bubbly lacing.

O - A very, very good beer, and one of the best porters I've ever had. I bought this beer from one of my favorite places because it was on sale. I was not expecting something this great for how much I paid for it, and I might go back and grab some more that were on sale.
