A crisp clear cola colour. Minimal head quickly migrates to the edges. decent lacing.
Smells starts out with typical porter notes: roast bordering on char, chocolate, a little sweet. There's something juicy about it, too, which I know is the hops, but if I hadn't had this before might be difficult to pin down.
The taste deviates from the smell primarily in the presence of the hops: they are big bold and in front. For this reason, I think of this is more of a black IPA/CDA than the porter as which it is advertised. Citrus and cocoa/coffee give way to an almost piney twang... it's hard to pick out specifics from the hops as they blend so naturally with the bitter chocolate and char.
The finish is all about those hops, too, but smoothe enough to not distract.
The first time I had this beer I was just getting into craft beer, and was a big porter/stout fan who didn't like hops very much. I went in expecting a traditional porter. I did not like this beer then. Now, several years later, knowing what to expect and with a further experienced palate, I can appreciate the well built brew that sits in front of me. Go in knowing what it is and you will probably enjoy it. Go in expecting mellow soft and roasty and you will be disappointed.

Poured into a Libby Poter/Stout glass.
A - Extremely dark brown to black body. 1 Finger head that is a dark orange/creamy caramel color. Head dissipates after about a minute and leaves splotchy lacing that is still active with bubbles and a large amount of lacing around the edge of the glass.
S - Light caramel, cooked orange , coffee, butter, vanilla, creamy, reminds me of a stout smell more than a porter, along the lines of a guiness. Hints of hops.
T - Starts incredibly creamy, once again reminded me of a guiness, but it followed with a spiciness like pepper and orange rind. Ends with moderate coffee and hop notes. Really nice flavor.
M - Starts off very full and rich, which I enjoy. Turns into mild acid, but is always accompanied by a creamy and bubbly lacing.
O - A very, very good beer, and one of the best porters I've ever had. I bought this beer from one of my favorite places because it was on sale. I was not expecting something this great for how much I paid for it, and I might go back and grab some more that were on sale.
