Purchased a while back at Bruisin' Ales (Asheville, NC) for $10. Bottled March 31, 2010. 12oz brown glass pry-top bottle. My cellar was 44 degrees, so I let it sit on the counter for about 10 mins.
Appearance: Pours with a crackle, like champagne really. Darker than I expected, A clear reddish brown with no head.
Nose: Very vinous, with leathery red fruit notes. Some cherry skins, medium caramel malt, some hay-like funk (but not super "funky"). Smells vaguely like a Flemish sour red blended with a French red wine.
Palate: Virtually still with really leathery flavors. Flavors include tanned leather, stewed cherries, sauteed orange peel in butter, acai berry juice, some "used oak" flavors. Sourness is kept in check by a large malt presence. Finish is balanced between sweetness and sourness. The palate is almost like a fine French pinot noir from Burgundy. Barrels seem to lend more in the way of wine flavor than tannins or toast.
Notes: A decent sour, very pleasant to drink, but not "epic." I'm glad I bought it, and would probably buy another given the chance, but won't necessarily go out of my way to get some. I would like to try others in this series.

Bottle served into an Avery stem-snifter as the Easy Tiger bar here in Austin, Texas on a special Avery night. Cost was a wallet-raping #30.00 USD (it was my birthday, so I paid it). 9.59% ABV. Bottled March 31st, 2010. "Barrel aged wild ale." Expectations were high. Reviewed from notes taken two nights ago.
A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.
Pours a half finger wide head which dissipates within 10 seconds. Body colour is a muted dull brown. Nontransparent and opaque.
Admittedly, it's not much to look at, but I'm optimistic.
Sm: Musty sour cherry. Zinfandel/white grapes. Some brettanomyces funkiness along with the mustiness. Lightly tat. Doesn't seem too sour. Depleted white wine. Not too tannic. A bit acetic. Fleeting hints of oak wood. No hop character. Quite appealing, though the age is noticeable - in a bad sense. Mild in strength. Luscious and attractive.
T/Mf: Luscious full grape notes. Nice fruity smacky tartness. Tame sourness. It's not puckering. Pleasantly sour, with some nice acetic character. Subtle timid brettanomyces funkiness. No hop presence. Malty base is seamless: red malts and Belgian malts provide a hardly noticeable foundation which doesn't intrude on the sourness. Rustic wood lends it a natural cohesion, but there's no identifiable oak. The grape is fantastic; I definitely get zinfandel when I search for it, but I'm not so pretentious I'd wager I could recognize it blind. The cherry notes could be more interesting; they're a bit shallow. The alcohol is dangerously well hidden. Well balanced, though it seems age has made it a bit reticent.
Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, almost refreshing. A bit too thick and imposing for the style and flavour profile.
I don't find any spices in the flavour profile. Below average depth of flavour. Below average intensity; quite mellow for a sour. Average duration of flavour. I like it.
Not oily, harsh, astringent, boozy, hot, or gushed. Has a decent presence on the palate. Not too acidic.
Dr: Quite drinkable. I think it'd be better fresh. Drink it now if you have one. At $30, I definitely wouldn't buy it again, but it's nice to try once. A tasty but not world class sour from Avery. Hides its ABV well. Will satisfy sour lovers but not blow them away.
