@ Woody's

Black with a slight, bubbly head and drippy lace. Smells primarily of coffee grounds, sweetener, and something like cold chocolate ice cream. More coffee in the flavor, dark roasted malt, bitter chocolate, and some wateriness. Medium bodied and dry with a bit of texture.

Simple, not complex, but not bad. I feel like the base stout isn't quite bold or rich enough to compete with the coffee.

On tap at the Avery Tap Takeover at The Common Table.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma has a ton of coffee in it. The coffee is also the star of the show in the flavor, but it is accompanied by a little bit of roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. There is some sweetness to the flavor which compliments the coffee nicely. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

16 oz chalice at the Glass Half Full taproom.

This beer appears a solid black, devoid of light in any form, with one finger of weakly foamy, sudsy beige head, which leaves some random specks of remote islet lace around the glass as things duly sink away.

It smells of espresso beans, bittersweet cocoa, black licorice, caramel malt, treacle, subtle char, earthy hops, and a slight twinge of metallic alcohol. The taste is still rather bitter coffee-heavy, though now the bready, roasted caramel malt comes out to play in force, while the anise notes lean towards Scandinavian saltiness, and the hops do well to cut through the espresso to provide a complexity to the dryness.

The carbonation is a bit edgy, but settles out soon enough, the body medium-heavy in weight, and actually rather smooth, and a tad creamy. It finishes on the sweet side, the coffee going all Starbucks, with the chocolate and earthy root spiciness.

A pleasant enough coffee-stricken stout, the guest ingredient seeming a bit intrusive at first, but settling out as things progress. Ennjoyable, I suppose, if this is your type of thing.

A: deep brown, not as dark as I like my stouts
S: well it certainly smells like coffee, it's like a 711 in here.
T: mild burnt malt flavor, they went a little over board on the Honduran coffee. it really tastes like carbonated coffee--not beer.
M: sharp carbonation for a stout. watery and too weak for my taste. is it just me or is Avery big time overrated?

On tap at Avery. Pours near black. Loads of coffee. Some underlying dry roast. Really excellent coffee beer.

First had: on tap at their brewpub

Features a "cold coffee toddy made by Unseen Bean." Well, okay then. I have learned--as an amateur homebrewer--that this is the best way to get a clean and non-bitter coffee flavor into your beer, so once again, Avery knows what they're doing. (I hope my upcoming batch of coffee cream stout comes out good!)

Anyway, this beer poured a dark, coffee brown, not quite black, with a small, creamy, tan head. Aroma of roasted coffee and dark malts. More of this in the taste, with some chocolate tones in the background. No hops to speak of. Just lots of roastiness. On the heavier side of medium-bodied; very drinkable.

As it says, it is out of sight. Aroma is that of iced coffee and hints of hops. Appearance is as black as an unsweetened coffee, with white head. Taste is exactly coffee and slight hops. Palate is dry slightly bitter. Overall good wake-up beer. Avery does this one right.

On-tap at Blue Palms

A: The pour is a dark, dark brown color. Looks almost black in the glass, with a finger's worth of khaki colored head.

S: Just an amazing coffee aroma to this beer. One of the best noses on a coffee beer that I've been fortunate to come across. Just a hint of roasted malt and sweet cream and sugar.

T: More of the same on the tongue. Some roast, bitter dark chocolate, and sweet milk chocolate. While those flavors are there, the coffee dominates and is really quite pleasant.

M: The body is medium, but appropriate for just a regular stout, medium carbonation.

D: A real pleasure to drink. Very easy to put this beer down. Too bad it's draft only.

This is a coffee stout, a variation on Out of Bounds.

Sampled at the brewery on 9/24/11.

Listed on the menu as a "house blend - cold coffee toddy added."

A - Black with a short sticky mocha head. Appears a bit thin, but leaves excellent lace.

S - Rich roasty coffee grounds, almost burnt. Slight ashiness going on here as well.

T - Strong coffee roast and bitterness to the flavor. The base stout lends a very dry character. Big char character.

M - Leaves somewhat of a mineral aftertaste. Dry with lingering bitterness.

O - Nice one, but too roasty for me, it came off as too harsh to fully blend with the coffee addition.

On tap at the tasting room at Avery. Poured a dark brown, nearly black color with a slight tan head that disapated quickly, leaving a small brownish film. Aromas of roasted coffee, chocolate, malt, and more coffee. Taste was very nice: coffe, malt, a touch of bitter chocloate, and a failry dry finish. I like this one better than the base beer (Out Of Bounds Stout). Coffee, anyone?

Had this one on tap at Avery this evening. According to the beer list, this is Out of Bounds Stout with cold pressed coffee added. Pours a nice, rich black color with a decent amount of light brown head. Aromas of coffee, roasted malt and dark chocolate. On the palate, huge fresh brewed coffee, which works really well here; very nicely integrated into the flavor profile, balanced by some nice dark chocolate. One of the better coffee stouts I've had, and an improvement on the already very good Out of Bounds Stouts.

A very drinkable coffee stout from Avery. Although it almost feels like an "American Black Ale", or Cascadian whatever we're calling those things now.

Dark brown pour with slight head on top. It's hard to judge the head at bars as the bartenders try to fill the beer to the rim--in most places anyway. Some soapy-yet-a-bit-oily lacing.

Aroma is black coffee, yet not robust. It lingers around as some chocolate and black bread come and go.

Straight up coffee flavors. Dark chocolate can be detected. Some green twigs give it a bit of a sour taste. Hops give it some earthiness. Feels like an IPA without the citrus. Some tannins.

Overall pretty good.
