On-tap at Blue Palms

A: The pour is a nice golden color with a hint of orange and a dense white head.

S: A big tropical fruit aroma to this one. Lots of pineapple with some mango, grapefruit, and perhaps lemon. Some nice floral and grass notes as well, and a bready malt base.

T: The flavor follows the nose, for the most part. Fairly bitter, which was nice and helped to balance the strong fruit flavors contributed by the hops. Moderately bready from the malt with just a hint of sweetness.

M: The body is a bit lighter than an IPA, but a bit fuller than your typical pale lager. A lively carbonation goes with it.

D: This style of really hoppy lager works for me. The fairly light base lager is a great palate for intense hopping.

On tap at Avery brewpub on 8/11/10. Listed as 6.5% ABV with 69 IBUs.

A - Clear golden/amber body with lively carbonation and a bubbly bright white head of froth that yielded thick, pasty intricate lacing all over the glass.

S - Floral and citrus notes provide an initial solid one-two punch, followed by a clean malt base of sweet caramel, bready notes and lightly toasted grains. Quite hoppy for a lager, hence the moniker of "India Pale Lager," I presume.

T - Taste like, well, a lager on the 'roids. While the lager is indeed heavily hopped, the bitterness isn't crazy. The flavor is crisp with with a hop punch that delivery plenty of bitterness across the ol' buds. Floral and citrus notes dominate while the clean malt backbone keeps the flavor balanced with lightly toasted grains and bready notes.

M - Pretty light bodied with fairly oily for a lager, yet still retains a clean, crisp mouthfeel. Finishes with a nice hop bite on the palate.

D - You know, I could really get used to this type of beer. Combines the sessionability of a lager with the hop character of an IPA. And it certainly didn't feel like a 6.5% ABV brew. This sucker drank like a 4% quaffer!

On tap tonight at the Avery Quinquepartite release. I hadn't seen this one before, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Pours from the tap a medium golden color, with a nice white head. Decent hops on the palate, very pilsner like. On the palate, this is a very nice, crisp and drinkable golden lager, but not as hoppy as I would have thought.
