On tap at Rackhouse on Thursday, Sep 23. Fairly dark in color with quite a bit of smoke aroma with a small head that disapated fairly quick. Taste was a lot of smoke with a little bit of malt; I couldn't pick up the oak at all. I thought it was quite tasty, though drinkability might be low as the smoke is definitely the strong point of this one. I'd visit it again, given the chance.

On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a brownish-copper color with a half-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of sweet caramel malts with very faint hints of toffee. Of course, also present are large amounts of smoked malt aromas - more smoked meat than anything else.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Equal amounts of sweet caramel malt and smoked malt flavors kick things off. The sweetness subsides a bit midway through the sip as the flavors begin to integrate more. Near the end of the sip there's a very faint hint of vanilla that fades out into a mildly bitter ending, leaving smoke flavors lingering on the palate.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I'm under the impression this was aged in Stranahan barrels however I don't get much influence from them except for the hint of vanilla in the flavor profile. A nice beer for the style that's sweeter than most but is certainly not overdone. Worth a shot if you see it around.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewery's tap room, this clocked in at 9% and was big. Great aroma, the smoke cme through with the whisky. Dark brown wioth a Caesar head, looks like a Belgian dark. They used the Colorado Strataleon whisky barrels. Caramel, a sipper and thick mouthfeel, smoking the Big Smokey of which it has as a base. Great barrelling story.

Pours a red brown with a light tan head. Nice looking.

Nose is all rich plums, sweet malt with carmel and toffee tones. Nice coffee character and roasted grains in nose. Nose is actually layered and most pleasant.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, well balanced and leaves you wanting more.

Flavors really follow nose. Nice lightly smokey character with nice bitter hops/bitter coffee but balanced with a rich sweet malt, purple plums with tones of carmel and toffee. Flavors are layered and continue to grow and change with nice complexity.

Nice bitter roasted grain, red plum/coffee finish.

Splurged. Tried this expensive creation on tap (10 oz. pour) at the Avery tasting room... Boy, I'm glad I did!

A: The pour is a ruby-red / brown with a modest head.

S: It's aged for three months in bourbon barrels-- and that's the main thing coming through in the smell.

T: Here was the surprise for me. Not much smokiness. (Not that I'm adverse to smoked flavor, but I was more interested in the bourbon-barrel aspect). The whiskey is pronounced but balanced by a sweetness I was not expecting. The high-level of alcohol is evident but not overwhelming.

M: Another pleasant surprise here in the high amount of carbonation. It created a zippy champagne feel in the mouth. The body is light to medium.

D: This beer is a paradox, really. I'm not too fond of German-style beers, but this is one that fits my palette. I have never quite had anything like it so I'm boosting its rating somewhat thanks to novelty. But there's something to be said for novelty when its integrated with quality.

Fumator at avery tap room. Aroma- funky burbon socks leather. Appearance deep mahogany brown thin halo of head. Taste is more of smell- Funky feet dipped in burbon. mouthful was resinous. Not bad... But not my thing. When avery does so many crazy brews its hard to get em all perfect.

On-tap at Blue Palms

A: The pour is a dark brown color with a bit more than a finger's worth of off-white head.

S: A big whiff of smoke comes through right away, but luckily, there are some other aromas with it. Hints of oak along with some bacon, salt, and nuts. There is a fair amount of sweetness in there too, sort of like candied apples.

T: The smoke is maybe a bit too heavy for me on the palate. Smoke, peat, oak, almonds, and bacon in terms of the "Rauch" aspect. Some caramel, vanilla, and candied apples providing a bit of contrast and sweetness.

M: The body is medium to full with a surprising amount of carbonation. But I appreciated this as I could see the beer getting quite syrupy.

D: The smoked aspect of the beer was a little overbearing at times, I thought. I was able to have a portion of a glass of this, but I don't think I could drink a full 10-12 ounces of this.

A rich and savory Smoked Beer that's reminescent of barbecue and campfire. Balanced by complex sweetness and earthiness, this beer is way too easy to drink for its strength and flavor intensity.

Solid Brown in color, the beer carries a modest haze, but bold in a creamy foamstance that weathers the session well and leaving pockets of lace behind as beer fades.

Robust aromas of smoked malts give a meaty richness of bacon or smoked salmon. Balanced with sweet toffee malts, barrel aged woods/tanins, and a mix of vanilla and charred caramel.

Flavors supress the smoke character by about half, but favor the malty rich taste and bourbon barrel complexity. Nutty brittle and kettle caramelization blends in the elements of bread crust and medium toast in a way that reminds me of authentic triple decocted German Dopplebocks.

The sweet, rich character wraps around the textures as well. Remaining full, velvety, and sweetley weighted, I'd prefer a finish of dry toast and malty-dry fade to allow the alcohol warmth to accent the fleeting sweetness.

A return to smoky intensity happens in the aftertaste and through the retro-olfactory senses... and a return to me suddenly needing a pork brisket sandwich.

On tap in the barrel room at Avery. I had really wanted to try this one at the Rackhouse Wednesday night, but upon finding out it was $25 to get into the (allegedly) rare beer tasting, I passed. Much to my delight, I found it on tap at the brewery today. Poured a medium brown color, with 3/4 of an inch of head. Huge smoke on the nose, and again on the palate. This one is listed as a rauchbier aged in Stranahan's whiskey barrels, but the smoke is king. A little oak pokes through, but mostly smoke. Good though.

Pours a a copperish color without much of a head. Smells of sweet vanilla and smoke. Taste is some meat and bacon upfront. This fades to a really nice vanilla bourbon flavor. The bourbon is really mellowed and blends nicely with the smoked malts. Nice full and creamy body. Really solid barrel ages rauchbier. Super drinkable and the booze is really well hidden.

Draft at the tasting room.

Pours a dark chocolate brown color that is completely opaque with dark mahogany edges and a two finger frothy off white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring.  Sporadic spots of lace left behind.

Sweet boozy aroma with a very strong barrel presence.  Lots of toasted oak and sweet whiskey.  Underneath thre is a nice smoked malt presence with hints of BBQ, ash, bacon, chocolate, toffee and oatmeal.

Medium bodied with an excellent balance of smokey malt and sweet boozy spirit/earthy oak barrel character.  Sweet up front with lots of tasted oak and vanilla which tone down the sweet booze.  Nice whiskey flavor that is strong but not overpowering allowing the other notes to shine through.  Nice amount of smoke underneath with burnt toast, charcoal, BBQ, bacon,  grilled meat and chocolate.  Very complex with subtle heat at end and warmth in the chest but overall the  ABV is decently masked.  Awesome!

Had on tap at the Cheeky Monk on Colfax.

A: pitch-black, and syrupy. nice hint at head lacing on it.

S: Peaty, peaty, peaty. Possibly peatier than the legendary Octomore. Slight hint of oak back, but peat dominates the nose, entirely.

T: First taste, blast of peat overwhelms the palate, nose, pores, everything. Oak, and lesser smokiness behind the peat. Boy, do I love peat. Problem: can't finish a serving. 3 - 6oz is more than enough, 8 oz ... was far too much. Tried to man-up and failed.

F: Syrupy and sweet to the tongue. Lucious and rich.

D: Overall this is a great beer, serving size needs to be considered. It occurs to me that my favorite scotches would need revaluation if I were challenged with 8 - 12 oz at a time. Still, lots of style-points for bold-i-tude alone here ... hats off to you avery (as usual).
