We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Just need to weigh in on this beer. Poured from a bottle in to a Hill Farmstead stemmed snifter. I tried to be patient and let this bad boy warm on the cabinet for a while before cracking open. Should have waited a tad more, but wow. Even at a colder temp you could tell it was going places. As it warmed it began revealing amazing, boozy pumpkin pie flavors. I paired it with some extremely dark chocolate and was in heaven.

I first had this beer at FOBAB in 2012 and recalled adoring it. This was my first chance to revisit it and I'm hoping it becomes an annual thing. I can't recommend this beer enough if you're a fan of big, spicy-sweet yam and pumpkin beers. I do wish I'd enjoyed one at the height of the Autumn months. This would be an absolute gem on a crisp Autumn day.

A delight of a desert beer, designed and crafted very well for the cooler Autumn season.

Rumkin pours with a lightly carbonated mohogany redish-brown color and good clarity. Early froathy head formation eventually falters underneath the weight of alcohol and savory sweetness.

Spiced rum hits the nose with a mellow and rich scent. Elements of molassas, toasty, light chocolate, and pumkin pie spice round out the rum/barrel woodiness very well. Very appetizing and mouth watering.

Even more intense is the flavor; where the Porter-ish flaovor of toast, chocolate, nutty, and coffee flavors apply the initial flavor. Sweet rum flavor develops the Porter flavors into more congac and port wine richness and layers. Chocolate and pumpkin pie linger into the long and sweet finish and give a lasting impression in the aftertaste.

Rich, oily and weighted- Rumkin drinks much like a well aged Barleywine with a silky smooth sweet feel. No dryness or fleeting progression, this beer doesn't need it, Rumkin is a desert all to itself.

Surprisingly, the beer's own sweetness develops its into layers upon layers of complexity and substitutes balance very well. Savory and succulent throughout.

Batch 1 (bottled 10/5/11) and 3 (bottled 9/8/13) tasted side-by-side

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color and, of course, the younger beer has better head retention, at first, but both heads fritter away after about 30 seconds; not surprising, given the ABV

Smell: The rum is much more apparent in the younger version as is the spicing, but the older version has more depth of pumpkin aromatics

Taste: The pie spice, caramel sweetness and rum pounce on the tastebuds in the younger version but the older version is more mellow, bringing a complex melding of the spices, the rum and the pumpkin; a lot of warmth in the gullet from the younger version bursts forward and interrupts the flavor development while the complexity builds in its older sibling, with the warmth in that one settling deep in the belly

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation and plenty of boozy warmth

Overall: Not sure why this beer has to have such a high ABV but it was very interesting to sample these two beers side by side; at first, I thought the younger version far superior as it forced itself upon the palate; after a few sips, I found myself returning again and again to the older version as it only revealed its complexity with the passage of time

On tap at Blue Palms Brewhouse in Los Angeles, CA as part of their Jingle Bell Jubilee.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a 1/2 inch tan head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. Random dots of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, spices, pumpkin, rum, and wood. A very nice barrel aged aroma on this one. Taste is of malt, sugar and spice (cinnamon and the like), graham crackers, rum, and wood. The pumpkin is there but very subtle in my opinion. This beer has a nice level of carbonation with crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a great pumpkin beer that turned out extremely well with the rum barrel aging.

Bottle share at Proof courtesy of scotchzi. Opaque orangey amber. Zero head, but who cares? Aroma reminds me of hot cider: spice (cinnamon, clove) sweet almost burnt sugar, and pumpkin replaces the apple, but there is a touch of baked apple too. Taste is very similar, but a warm spiced rum comes through too. Thin-medium body with almost no carbonation; but who cares? Extremely well thought out brew, and yummy as hell. Maybe my new favorite pumpkin?

The beer pours a hazy orange color with no real head. The aroma has a lot of pumpkin pie spices in it, as well as some rum notes. I get some cinnamon and allspice most predominantly. The flavor is similar. I get some big pumpkin notes, as well as some cinnamon, allspice and cloves. There is also a good dose of oak and a ton of rum character. The beer is very boozy and fairly sweet. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Rumpkin (Batch No. 2) opens with a heavy rum scent that can be detected from a good foot or so away from the bottle. Up close the rum aromas mingle with heavy doses of fruit esters, including the obvious pumpkin, but an equally large helping of banana. The fruits are so strong here that they actually overtake the rum after the bottle has been opened for a few seconds, and the beer more resembles a fresh-baked batch of banana bread. Good edges of toast crust and buttery graham cracker add to the pastry qualities of the nose, joined by heavy whipping cream, Bailey’s Irish Cream, vanilla bean, caramel syrup, molasses, almond extract, and oak. As a whole, the nose is very intriguing, bearing little resemblance to a beer (or, in fact, any other beer I’ve ever encountered), and obviously speaking to an incredible amount of sugars. It says much of these sugars that the incredibly high 18.1% ABV is mainly apparent as a liqueur-like rim, as if just slightly too much Bailey’s had been added to a bowl of whole-bean vanilla ice cream. Very interestingly, the rum barrel aging is not as present here as could be expected, mainly seeming to add extra touches of vanilla, as well as oak. The overall effect is quite incredible.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a heavy shot of alcohol that makes immediately apparent the high ABV. The first impressions are of cognac, bourbon, rum, and orange liqueur mixed together, the alcohol, charcoal, and charred oak strong enough that they bite at the tongue, shoot heavy vapors up the nose, and give the beer all the appearance of a spiced and high-quality rum on the rocks. A good dose of the pumpkin and banana fruit esters comes through, with additional spice support from pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, and allspice. Some graham cracker and toast crust elements add to the pie feeling of the flavor palate. Heavy whipped creams, vanillas, molasses, and caramel sit atop the pile. The effect is that of a nicely-spiced pumpkin pie topped with heavy cream, eaten contiguously with a thick, moist, chewy slice of five-star banana bread, and all of it washed down with an aged, smooth, fruity spiced rum. The aftertaste is a long-lingering continuation of these impressions, still easily detectable after a full two minutes. Mouthfeel is an alcohol-burning medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is stunning beer, and most certainly not your average pumpkin ale. The difference between this and the standard seasonal offering is kind of like the difference between a Toyota Camry and a fire-breathing, gas-guzzling, nitroused funny car. This does, of course, mean that anyone not already familiar with some of the more extreme possibilities of barrel aging should likely be very wary of this brew, and anyone who finds the alcohol kick of straight bourbon or rum should also stay away. But if you are a fan, and you’re ready to spend several hours nursing this sucker (because there’s no way you’re going to shoot this in ten minutes), it’s definitely an amazing offering.

Deep copper to brown in color. I see definite evidence of alcohol from rum barrel aging in the cloudiness of this beer. The head was minimal and quickly vanished after the pour. The aroma is of dark rum and perhaps dark malt with a bit of caramel. The mouthfeel is thick,chewy,and warm with alcohol. I get dark rum on the front of the palate. I get some sweetness and body from the pumpkin. I also get some definite warming in my throat from the alcohol. While you can tell there is abundant alcohol,I would not have guessed what I see listed on the bottle!

Dark amber, almost pumpkiny color. Brown and orange in there, sweet aroma, no doubt from the rum.

Somewhat simplistic taste, rum, pumpkin, beer, yeah, somewhat exotic, would like to see Avery do their hopping and dry hopping thing in this, I realize that's pretty simplistic too, but it is a crowd pleaser. A little bit of spice, the abv was too easily tasteable in this one for me.

Pours a clear dark orange to amber color with no head. Aroma is huge alcohol, almost mediciny. Also get some fruity esters and vanilla, along with just a slight rum hint. The taste is super sweet, like dark molasses on the front end, with some nice lingering pumpkin and spice notes. Alcohol is very present. The mouthfeel was hot and a little oily feeling, but in a nice way. Super tasty beer- I haven't had a bad barrel-aged beer from Avery yet.

2011 Batch 1

A - Dark, cherry brown with a warm liquor like glow. No head and minimal carbonation

S - Brown sugar, raisins, molasses, and good rum presence. Hints of hearty pumpkin as well

T - Molasses, raisins, honey and dates up front. The beer then has a nice hearty pumpkin presence in the middle. The finish has some slight alcohol warmth and oak near the finish. It reminds me a bit of a fortified wine like a port in that it's big, sweet, and slightly syrupy

M - Has a port like body in that it is thick and boozy and slightly syrupy. It also has minimal carbonation

O - This is definitely a sipper that I could see a good after dinner drink. It manages to have some nice rum presence without being too boozy. Nice to have on a cool fall night

Rumpkin is a thick orange, as in extremely thick, somewhat bright but with no give to it. The orange-tinted head is small and develops a firm layer with some bubbling coming in as it drops. It leaves behind tight lace in light to moderate quantity, mostly in spotting.
I think my nostrils are eating pumpkin, honestly. Otherwise it has a lot of sugary sweetness and some alcoholic burn. There seems to be vanilla and wet molasses, like a syrup was made and woody spices added.
The flavor is extremely sweet, exceedingly so in fact. Spices make their play, and they do add something good but they can't do much to cut the sweetness. The alcohol stings hard, a little too hard, and it just ends up leaning too cloying and harsh even for a dessert beer.
The sweetness in the thick body make this beer too syrupy in the feel. The body ends up full, obviously sweet with no dryness balancing and the ethanolic sting hitting the tongue pretty hard.
I can't get into the beers that are this hard as much as I'd like, though it could be a good enough sipper for sure.

On tap at Ginger Man NYC. First sip was "too sweet", next two or three less so. By the fourth sip I was on board. Complex flavor that balanced the high alcohol perfectly. Rum? I caught hints, which is exactly what made this a perfect beer to me. Full of subtle flavors that kept me going back and discovering more with each taste.

Orange-gold, amber - decently clear, minimal white head.

Very pumpkin pie/fall aroma with a substatial punch of boozy rum sweetness. Graham cracker, nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin and barrel.

Tastes very young and boozy, hides some of the rich spice on the nose. In-balance boozy sweetness, nice barrel and strong rum but very very sweet

Very smooth mouthfeel that is not too syrupy.

Not a big pumpkin beer fan but this is very good. Crazy sweet, though. Really want to try the porter bourbon version.

My first Rumpkin! Been looking forward to this big bastard for awhile. Poured from bottle into Brooklyn snifter. Pours a murky dark brown color, reminiscent of dirty drain water, except darker. No head whatsoever, but I expected that given the ABV. Smell- BOOZE! Rum, dark fruits like currants, trifle cake, brown sugar. The rum is unmistakable and overwhelming. Taste- WOW. a sweet blast of rum soaked cake to the front of the tongue. Brown sugar, candied dark fruit carries forward second. some nice bitterness evens out the sweet flavors on the back of the throat. This is boozy as hell, but it all works well together. What it does not remind me of at all is pumpkin. I really get more heavy rum, dark fruit, spices, and sweet candied sugar. Very enjoyable- I will be aging a bottle of this too, but I really like this fresh. A very drinkable 15.6% beer.

12oz, gold foil-capped bottle, 2014 edition, procured during GABF last month. Also the reason why our contingent broke one of the basic first-day tenets there - by having late-evening pints of this stuff at World of Beer.

This beer pours a clear, dark red brick amber hue, with one finger of wanly puffy, loosely foamy, and mostly just bubbly tan head, which leaves some streaky Gulf War tracer fire lace around the glass as things slowly, slowly recede.

It smells of rich, roasted, and certainly vegetal pumpkin flesh, meek earthy ginger, subtle nutmeg, a baba cake meets caramel pudding maltiness, surprisingly plain brown sugar, stressed barrel staves, the metallic and tropical fruit-tinged rum that causes said stress, and a soft leafy, herbal bitterness. The taste is big and sweet, full of dense, syrupy brown sugar, thick caramel malt, hot vanilla, timid seasonal spices - the nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon just overwhelmed, it would seem - goopy pumpkin leftovers, and a rather standoffish aged dark rum booziness.

The carbonation is actually quite tangible for this early in the game, though still manifesting in a mild frothiness, the body smooth, but in the manner of having signed a veritable deal with the devil - always looking over your shoulder, and all that. It finishes on the inflated sweet side, for sure, but with enough going on in the interim, before that middle-shelf rum shot hits you, to keep things more or less just this side of sane.

As during that ill-advised 'nightcap' in metro Denver, the bristling threat of this offering (not necessary to detail here, look it up, or read a label) seems to just bleed away, once you dive in with both feet. Large, fully of bloated pumpkin pie, barleywine-esque malt, and actually polite rum barrel booze. What's not to like, especially when it's drinking this well, this soon?

Bottled September 17th of this year.

Poured into a goblet, Rumpkin is a hazy copper color with barely any head.

Aroma is rich and boozy with a big hit of a rum barrel.

Flavor is huge and intense with rum, primarily, but also some pumpkin and pie spice. The barrels impart some vanilla but the rum character really overpowers it.

Mouthfeel is big in body, low in carbonation, and high in alcohol.

An interesting beer and just about as big as it gets. Worth a try but probably only once.

I was able to try this beer at a tasting organized by Jeffo and Doopiedoopiedoo. Read some more about the tasting on my review of The Brewery - Black Tuesday.

A - A beautiful cloudy ruby pour with a small off-white head. Head retracts almost instantly and there appears to be no lacing.

S - A near perfect smell of vanilla, caramel and some sweet sour-like scent.

T - Really sweet, boozy, caramel toffees and a bit sour.

M - Medium to low carbonation and no bitterness whatsoever.

O - A very nice and sweet pumpkin ale.

Rich, the richest pumpkin I have had? I am overwhelmed by booze and rum, did I know and expect 16% abv? Medium brown, with cinnamon and nutmeg. Smooth mouthfeel, a tad above average. No lasting head. Spicy invigorating but yes high abv aroma. Damn I must eat to stay balanced after this amount of booze, but damn worth it.

2011 vintage on tap at Good Life

A - Dark amber pour with no head or foam. Has a thickness to its consistency as it swirls in the glass.

S - Scents of rich molasses and brown sugar. There is a slight aroma of pumpkin and spices. Very strong scent of rum.

T - Initial flavor is sweet but there is almost no pumpkin flavors. Some spice notes and flavors of blackstrap molasses. Finish is very boozy and similar to a tawny port wine.

M - Too heavy to be anything more than a sipper, but the balance is simply near impossible to attain given the style and ABV. In short, pumpkin beers were not meant to be this big. The experience is not bad though; a small pour of this is a really good cordial.

O - Glad to have tried this extreme beer. Avery seems to push the envelope more than most. Good times.

Bottle pour @ Falling Rock, stop 1/5 on the Barrel Aged Bike Tour

Wickedly big - rum barrel, pumpkin pie, molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, dense pumpkin bread. Really good - would be a task to take down 12oz, but a task I would welcome. Definitely on the sweet end, with a tingling rum finish. Perfect for 11am on a Friday :)

12 oz. bottle poured into a Firestone Walker snifter. Bottled October 5, 2011. Labeled 15.90% ABV. Trying to get rid of bottles in my "cellar," but this one isn't in my catalog. Just found it back there. Hate when that happens. It's like it doesn't even count.

Appearance - Burnt orange to deep ruby body. Ample head as I pour it, but it's short lived. Collar sticks around a while. Sediment floats about the glass.

Smell - I can smell the rum from the initial crack of the cap. Spiced rum. Further inspection reveals a deep molasses sweetness and a ton of booze. Reminiscent of a rum barreled English barleywine.

Taste - Smooth sweet caramel and rum. Maybe some pumpkin there, definitely the spices associated. Cinnamon and nutmeg. All that stuff. After the initial flavors, an oaky dry boozy wave of alcohol hits. Sharp flavors sting the tongue. It settles to a lingering sugar flavor. The flavors aren't bad, but the alcohol is killer.

Mouthfeel - The blast of booze in the middle makes it very difficult to drink. Initial flavor is good, but the knowledge that the second wave of flavor will hit is fearsome.

Overall - I doubt I'm going to be able to finish this. I figured I could handle the 12 oz. bottle, but this is intense. Not really worth the flavors it provides.

12oz Bottle into a wine glass.

A-Dark brown color with minimal head. Super thick and syrupy as seen from the pour.

S-The smell of this is weird, like rum infused pumpkins with old milk. Frankly I could not smell this for long.

T-Tastes like pumpkin pie on crack. There is a lot of molasses, clove, honey, lots of honey, graham cracker and the slightest rum after taste.

M-This is super sweet and sticky. It is smooth for being 16% though.

O-I do not know why but I kept sipping on this beer. It is not that great but for some reasonable enjoyable. Worth a try once. It is like old school barleywine with a pumpkin twist. Super weird beer.

Entering from some hand written notes:

Murky orangish-brown color with a thick texture. Almost no head and looks flat.

Smells heavily of spiced rum and canned pureed pumpkin with a dash of allspice.

Ok, for taste I have down BOOZY, in all caps. Yep, that's what I remember most. It was more like a pumpkin rum than a pumpkin beer. Spiced rum and pumpkin spice sums it up. It's very sweet, too.

The mouthfeel is syrupy and I can recall a lot of Avery's bigger beers having this texture- thick body, low carbonation, and borderline cloyingly sweet.

I really dig the way the pumpkin and rum play off each other but I'm glad I was only drinking a 6oz pour of this. It's very boozy and thick. Proceed with caution.

T - Sweet pumpkin alcohol. Tastes more like a mild liquor than a beer to me.

D - This one will warm you up fast. It is not very refreshing due to the high alcohol content. This would be a substitution for hard liquor in my opinion.
