We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

It seems appropriate that a Pumpkin Ale would have a Pumpkin orange color but this has a beaming glow of pumpkin. The head is a touch thin as it collared with a bubbly fizz.

The aroma is spicy, i.e. cinnamon, nutmeg, peppercorn, anise and all spice, with enough gourd to make it pleasing. The rum barrel adds nice subtle tones of oak and sweet liquor.

The flavors truly expand as this warms. The pumpkin really drives the backbone as the spices compliment the taste. I catch the cinnamon and nutmeg but it blends with the malty gourd. The rum barrel further adds to flavor and the distilled sugar cane adds a tangy sweetness.

The feel is light but has a bit of alcohol harshness. There is a touch of spicy tang but the beer has a true fullness.

I'm fully impressed with this beer and found that it truly responded to warmth. It has a lot of complexity and is very delicious.

Pours a slightly hazy deep copper/amber with minimal khaki head that dissipates to nothing.

Rum and pumpkin dominate the aroma, with strong accents of booze, vanilla, and alcohol esters adding complexity. There's a note of sherry contrasting the rummy sweetness.

Extremely sweet, reminiscent of pumpkin pie initially. Underpinnings of rum, clove, and vanilla are not subtle! There's a muted dark fruit character that adds complexity to the sugary pumpkin onslaught. The finish is surprisingly dry and a touch oaky, exposing a squash backbone. Alcohol esters are a bit fusel and solventy.

Body is thick and syrupy, with modest carbonation and significant alcohol burn.

Definitely sweet, the sugary pumpkin and rum mingle well together. Esters balance nicely, keeping the beer drinkable.

2011 vintage on tap at Good Life

A - Dark amber pour with no head or foam. Has a thickness to its consistency as it swirls in the glass.

S - Scents of rich molasses and brown sugar. There is a slight aroma of pumpkin and spices. Very strong scent of rum.

T - Initial flavor is sweet but there is almost no pumpkin flavors. Some spice notes and flavors of blackstrap molasses. Finish is very boozy and similar to a tawny port wine.

M - Too heavy to be anything more than a sipper, but the balance is simply near impossible to attain given the style and ABV. In short, pumpkin beers were not meant to be this big. The experience is not bad though; a small pour of this is a really good cordial.

O - Glad to have tried this extreme beer. Avery seems to push the envelope more than most. Good times.

6 ounce pour into a globe glass at Big Wood festival at Brouwers in Seattle.

Pours clear ruby with about a finger of off-white head.

Smells very strongly of sweet fruit, it’s kind of like rotting fruit. Not in a bad way, just the way it gets stronger and sweeter when it rots. You can smell the rum from a mile away. There are a few light spices and I can detect very little pumpkin.

The taste was a lot of booze and sweet fruits. No surprises. Very crisp and full.

Palate was decent. Lots of alcohol bite and very carbonated.

Overall, I expected more from this. Love the style, and love the brewery, but Great Pumpkin still stands as my favorite pumpkin beer.

8oz draft pour served in a slender tulip for $8. Sampled 12/16/11.

Per the menu, "this beer is breed with pumpkin puree and a blend of 5 spices...aged in extremely fresh Gosling's rum barrels for 6 months..."

A: Pours a completely opaque, very dark amber color with ruby highlights along the glass's edge. Less than 1 finger of head on the pour which is light tan in color and quick to disappear. While a solid collar remains, lacing is unlikely. And it is.

S: After many intriguing sniffs, I'm unsure if the aroma is decent or detestable. Big pumpkin puree aroma with sopping wet dark fruit standing in uncut dark rum. The autumnal spices play the background more than expected, which is the only positive I find in the nose. Ultimately, I've decided this beer is not for me. And the longer the beer sits - the more offensive it becomes. Pumpkin beers are clearly not suited for stratospheric levels of alcohol.

T: Sickly sweet. The malty sweetness is just too big for the flavor profile. The caramel component is abrasively strong and adds unnecessarily to the already-too-prominent flavors of toffee and butterscotch. These flavors linger long, overstaying their welcome for minutes after each sip. Someone get me a glass of water. Somebody else: Light me up a cigarette.

M: The mouthfeel is actually decent. Adequate carbonation. Gently fizzy...but still cloyingly sweet. The rum barrel is less significant on the palate - mainly showing up on the backend - where it leads to an entirely unpleasant finish. Way too hot. Attenuation seems low.

O: I planned on Rumpkin being my last beer of the night, but that wouldn't have been fair to myself or my palate. So I sent back what remained in the glass and ordered something that I could enjoy.

Time to catch up on reviews of beers I had over the holidays. On draft at Capone's. Served in a 5.5 oz snifter...

A - Presented a deep orange color with some honey-like highlights when held to the light. Surprisingly nice eggshell white head that recedes to a cap. Some nice lacing.

S - Whoa. Sweet rum and vanilla come out right away; much more rum than I would've expected. This is followed by a big blast of nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, brown sugar and pumpkin. The aromas are quite sweet.

T - Quite sweet and very rich; and I have a BIG sweet-tooth. Lots of rum stands out mixing trying to mix with the pumpkin and pumokin pie spices (allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon). Caramel malts and oak come through too making it seem much sweeter.

M - Medium to full bodied beer that is quite rich, sticky and sweet. Higher carbonation than I would've expected, but it was on tap.

O - The sweetness of this one, mixed with the high ABV, made it a little tough to get through. DEFINITELY a sipper if I've ever encountered one. Really interesting idea, although I wonder if rum barrels were the best choice for a beer like this.

Purposely poured w/short head over an opaque dark orange body

Aromas are full of spices and lots of rum barrel with apple juice

Wow. Where to start? Super sweet, featuring caramelized pumpkin, allspice, cinnamon, apple pie, molasses, and some rum sweetness. Tasty but almost over-the-top sweetness

Mouthfeel is obviously rich, yet juicy (as if that makes sense). Goes down WAY too easily.

Dangerously drinkable beer. Good thing for 5.5 oz pours!

Look: Copper in color with a 1/2 inch head and decent retention

Smell: Lots of rum on the nose backed up by some pumpkin spice and cinnamon and some very present alcohol

Taste: Upfront is the expected pumpkin but then the rum takes over and brings a bit of warmth with it. Back end has some cinnamon and all spice

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium to low carbonation and a bit sticky

Overall: This is probably the best pumpkin beer I have ever had but it is still a pumpkin beer so that is not saying much

On tap at Blue Palms Brewhouse in Los Angeles, CA as part of their Jingle Bell Jubilee.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a 1/2 inch tan head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. Random dots of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, spices, pumpkin, rum, and wood. A very nice barrel aged aroma on this one. Taste is of malt, sugar and spice (cinnamon and the like), graham crackers, rum, and wood. The pumpkin is there but very subtle in my opinion. This beer has a nice level of carbonation with crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a great pumpkin beer that turned out extremely well with the rum barrel aging.

Hands down my fave pumpkin ale. Big, strong, powerful. Had it at the Great Pumpkin Alefest at Elysian Brewery. Spice, Pumpkin, and Rum all in great balance throughout. I dare say this is a Pumpkin ale for Barley Wine fans(wich I am). Wish I could have got my hands on some bottles for my cellar.

On tap at Strong Ale 2011.

A: Ruddy reddish brown with an off-white head.

S: Big notes of allspice and nutmeg. Rum is pretty strong, but there's not really any harshness one might expect from such a high ABV. Pumpkin blends with pie crust and cinnamon.

T: Lots of rum with strong notes of allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Alcohol is bold but not harsh or out of place. I get a lot of pumpkin, as well as earth, fig, and date. This is quite sweet.

M: Medium body with high carbonation on tap.

Overall: This is well done, but it's not my style and is a bit much for me. Four ounces is more than enough.

Pours a slightly hazed leafy brown color with some brighter auburn tones. Very little head, retention or lacing.

Whoa, lots of booze on this one. Strong tones of spiced rum, vanilla, oak, and pumpkin. Some caramel and cinnamon. Warm alcohol esters.

Sweet and rich up front on the tongue. A strong sense of straight up Captain Morgan-like spiced rum, slight astringency as well. Thick bready caramel malts, very roasty and warm on the tongue. Vanilla and candy corn with some oak. Finishes hot and sweet.

Fuller body, decent carbonation, sticky, chewy, and coating on the tongue. I was happy to try this, but I thought the rum was a little overboard and the sweetness was pretty strong.

On tap at the Bistro barrel-aged fest.

A: Pours a deep orange-honey colored body with good clarity and a nice head. Decent retention with some lace.

S: This beer is intense on the nose. The rum barrel really stands out. Lots of rum, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, nutmeg on the nose.

T: This is horribly, horribly sweet. Cloying, really. Rum, vanilla, brown sugar. The only things that fight the flavor a little bit are the oak and a touch of nutmeg and/or cinnamon. Just the same, it fills that small need in me to have sickly-sweet things around holiday time (and holiday time only) -- then I can spend the rest of the year convincing myself they were awesome. Candy corn falls in this category. Candy corn and Rumpkin. Anyway, it's not the worst pumpkin beer I've had, but 2 oz is all you need, really.

M: Full-bodied. Very sticky, sweet flavors. Could clean up better. I prefer my pumpkin beers to be pie-like but fairly clean in flavor, not syrupy.

O: I was told by some other patrons to leave this "palate-wrecker" toward the end. I was skeptical; how badly could this wreck a palate at a BARREL AGED BEER FEST? Turns out, quite badly. A very sweet beer.

A: Dark honey color with a very thin cream colored head.

S: Rum, lots of pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin, vanilla, golden raisin and caramel.

T: The pumpkin works unbelievably well with the sweetness of the rum. Some nice spice notes coupled with the alcohol make you feel like you're eating a warm piece of pumpkin pie. Definitely a sipper but delicious.

A: pours a murky brown-orange with half a finger of beige head that almost completely vanishes with no lacing.

S: sweet caramel aromas up front followed by some tart apple aromas. Slight pumpkin spice aromas follow along with vanilla, oak, and rum. The tart fruit aromas permeate throughout.

T: lots of caramel up front with vanilla and oak. Some light pumpkin spice and ginger notes follow. Sweet rum with a light alcohol burn bring up the finish.

M: medium-thick body with low carbonation, this beer is syrupy sweet.

O: a decent beer, but much too sweet. I like the rum characters, but the pumpkin aspects are lost in the sweetness and alcohol.

Wow, this is pumpkin ale for Halloween if there ever was one. Imperial, in a major way. It’s an imperial imperial, with an abv the same as driving age in most states. Bottled, I’d share this with a friend and called it a night in order to sleep it off. (Can you imagine a bomber of this? Hijole!) On draught, driving, and I’m glad it’s just a taster-sized pour since the evening was just getting started. But I certainly could have sipped on this one for an entire evening.
Pours a clear, light amber, with a very thin lacing. You get a lot of booze smelling it, but also a clearly distinct pumpkin aroma. That’s not always the case for a pumpkin ale. A real rummy sweetness around the edges. It’s a big beer, no doubt about it. But also very sweet and shippable. The effervescence helps keep it from feeling heavy on the palate. In a word: wow.

A deep amber orange with a white sheen. Carbonation is light and fades a bit over time, but never goes flat. Pretty impressive for something this strong.
The nose is VERY rum heavy. Rum overpowers even the pretty potent pumpkin pie spices.
The flavor is sweet and creamy, like some of the best pumpkin beers around...and then that rum hit kicks in. While it adds flavor, it also adds a fair amount of heat and distillate character.
Allspice, sweet cream, and cinnamon are amplified by that rum sugar. Sometimes that's awesome, sometimes it's fiery and off-putting.
A pretty hot brew at 15%, and a very slow sipper. Treat it like a cognac instead of a beer.
Some sips are really, really good while others taste like pumpkin rum.
I almost wish the beer weren't rum aged. Either that or maybe just taking on a milder character.
Pretty good, but probably not one I'll seek out like I would Meph Addict or some other Avery brews.

Review taken from notes.

This beer pours a dark mahogany copper color with some ruby hues. There was a tiny layer of off-white head that dissipated very quickly leaving some specs of lace behind on the glass. The nose is big and sweet. There are dark toasted malt, dark fruits, spiced rum, pumpkin, and holiday spices. There is a big booziness as well. The taste is deep dark and sweet. There are fruit flavors like raisin, fig, cherry, and plum. There is a hefty dose of pumpkin, cinnamon, and brown sugar. It is quite boozy, which is to be expected from a beer that is almost 14% alcohol. The whole flavor seems to linger on the palate in the finish. This is full bodied and has more carbonation than I thought it would have. There is some tingling and some roastiness. There is quite a bit of sweetness, and pretty big boozy warmth in the finish. This has really good drinkability. It is most definitely a slow sipper, but the flavor is great. I enjoyed every drop of this one. I really think the rum barrels were a good choice for this beer. I recommend trying this. I thought it was great.

On draft at Churchkey:

Pours an amber/orange color. Very little carbonation or lacing on the glass. Somewhat transparent in appearance. A very small cocoa head that actually sticks around for awhile. Great looking beer. Wow. This is amazing- the nose is cinnamon, a tiny bit of pumpkin, nutmeg, rum, oak, and molasses. Really complex and fantastic smells coming from this beer! The taste really brings the spices out- though not overwhelmingly so. Rum definitely makes it's presence known too. The taste is almost port like. Very complex flavors- and the 15.9% ABV is fairly well hidden too. Feel is smooth, silky, and rich- with a little alcohol burn on the end- Fantastic! Overall, this is the best pumpkin beer I've had by a landslide- although you don't get a lot of pumpkin. It's great though, and I'm glad I got to try this brew. Highly Recommended.

On tap at ChurchKey in DC. Poured into a snifter glass. Pours dark reddish brown with thin head and lacing that lasts throughout. Aromas full of toffee, caramel, cinnamon, clove, slight ginger, big notes of brown sugar, molasses, some nice spiced rum, nice sweet pumpkin notes on there as well, really big and full. Taste is just as good and the alcohol is pretty much completely hidden, starts with notes of sweet vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, and molasses, some nice cinnamon, clove, ginger, leading into a perfect blend of sweet pumpkin, rum, and a slight hint of warmth, balanced with a cinnamon, clove and ginger spice combo going into a nice dry, slightly bitter finish. Carbed well enough to carry the taste through the palate, nice full on the palate as well to have a nice lasting finish. What an interesting rum-infused pumpkin ale!

The Rumpkin is an intense experience. I've only had it at the tap room, however its taste is hard to forget. It has anything-but-subtle pumpkin and rum flavors, as well as a strong alcoholic smell. It's a very attractive dark orange with a thin head.

Out of all the pumpkin beers I've had it is the best tasting, yet stays extremely true to the type.

from notes on my last trip up north

orange tinted amber with a little bit of a haze to it and ample carbonation. A nice three finger head of white lace appeared on top and gradually faded down into just a film across the top. The aroma was very big, full of spices, lots of cinnamon and nutmeg were readily noticeable. The taste followed along the same line. A very spicy little ale with just the right amount of hotness to it. The cinnamon was particularly strong and had a great effect on the flavor. Very nice light body and ample carbonation made it go down very easily.

The Farmhouse had this brew on tap last fall and after seeing it on their website I had to go try it. The beer poured out as a nice copperish orange color. The head didn't last very long and didn't leave a lacing. The smell of the beer was spicy and boozy. The taste of the beer had a semi-sweet at first, then the spices kick in and the alcohol warmth finishes off the taste. The flavor is very strong, and I really liked the rum barrel aging. The mouthfeel is on the heavier side but it's got a good carbonation to it. Overall this is a really good beer to sip on a cooler autumn night. Enjoyable!

Enjoyed this on tap tonight as part of a Colorado Beer Week special tapping at Falling Rock. Reviewed from notes and a 15 minute old memory. The beer is a rich copper color, with small bubbles but no head to speak of. Aromas of spice, specifically cinnamon and clove. Rich mid-palate vanilla, with a butterscotch finish and a sharp but pleasant alcohol bite. This is a sipper, and an excellent one. If they ever decide to bottle this (and I hope they do), it'd be my go to snow day beer.

Pours a dark orange with a creamy head. Smells and tastes of pumpkin, rum and brown sugar, with a good amount of spices. The rum really enhances the pumpkin, this tastes like the best pumpkin pie or casserole you've ever had. Very sweet, with a nice mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. As a pumpkin beer fan I was really looking forward to this, and I wasn't disappointed. Avery needs to bottle this!
