Notes/Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Boozy and intensely sweet pumpkin pie… in brew form….

Presentation: 12 oz brown capped and foiled bottle. Busy label with a barrel background where a drawing of a rum growler sits next to a pumpkin, framed by the the Avery branding. Side paragraphs offers intent, process, and general ingredients. Notes bottling Oct. 2011, and a production of 512 cases. Shows 15.90% Alc. by Vol. Served in a snifter.

A - Lightly hazy deep amber pour with a small head and retention, faint surface memory and minimal lacing.

S - Loooong spiced nose, sweet, clove, all-spice, cinnamon… rummy booze…

T - Impressive first sip with a loooong sweet boozy touch, pumpkin pie shining on the spices with a boozy edge… too much spice… cinnamon, clove, all-spice, touch of nutmeg, caramel, molasses… very sweetly spiced.

M - Medium/full body with medium carbonation, creamy early on and then an emerging stickiness with a touch spicy finish as the boozy settles in.

O - Stimulating at points but a bit too large, sweet and cloying all in all. Booze is not the problem is that raw spiced bomb that blocks the brew somewhat.

Notes: Monster brew that I wonder if it will age graciously. For now worth the try but ultimately a bit much. Let´s see how the other bottle ages...

Another thank you to Mrbubbler for this high-test treat. Bottled Oct 5, 2011. 15.90% abv

Appearance. Pours a hazy, deep amber-orange with a very thin off-white head that quickly fades to a collar.

Smell. Rum, pumpkin spice, pumpkin, sweet caramel malts and molasses, and some old wood.

Taste. Pumpkin pie filling! Nice amount of spice, sweet and loads of pumpkin flavour. Some nice woody vanilla and a bit of rum. Not as boozy as I would have thought but the age may have helped in this department.

Mouthfeel. Full body, just a bit sticky. Low carbonation.

Overall. One of the better pumpkin beers I've tried. Love the drinkability considering the very high abv.

Batch #3 bottle that I picked up in San Diego for $13.99. Better be good. Part of a 2-man tasting alongside Good Gourd Almighty and Almanac Heirloom Pumpkin. Pours a slightly cloudy dark orange without much head. Aroma of spiced rum, pumpkins, a little cinnamon and nutmeg. Flavor is sweet caramel and light butterscotch, a little pumpkin fruit, light cinnamon and nutmeg spice, brown sugar, a bit of marshmallow cream. The sweetness is very nice here. Alcohol warmth is like whoah, as expected. Sweet, not quite syrupy mouthfeel with medium to low carbonation. Overall I like this a lot, and it is a huge improvement over the disappointment that was Good Gourd Almighty that we had right before this one.

A-Clear ruby orange, not much head, or carbonation. Sryup like.

S-Rum. Alcohol, some spices, tad bit of pumpkin. But a lot of rum. Too sweet.

T-Rather sweet, very sweet. The rum imparted too much flavor. Nice pumpkin in the finish but hardly any of the spices you expect in a pumpkin beer.

M-Medium bodied, thick, no carbonation.

O-There was no need for this high of alcohol. Rum barrel aging was a good idea but it threw off the balance.

On tap at the Bistro barrel-aged fest.

A: Pours a deep orange-honey colored body with good clarity and a nice head. Decent retention with some lace.

S: This beer is intense on the nose. The rum barrel really stands out. Lots of rum, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, nutmeg on the nose.

T: This is horribly, horribly sweet. Cloying, really. Rum, vanilla, brown sugar. The only things that fight the flavor a little bit are the oak and a touch of nutmeg and/or cinnamon. Just the same, it fills that small need in me to have sickly-sweet things around holiday time (and holiday time only) -- then I can spend the rest of the year convincing myself they were awesome. Candy corn falls in this category. Candy corn and Rumpkin. Anyway, it's not the worst pumpkin beer I've had, but 2 oz is all you need, really.

M: Full-bodied. Very sticky, sweet flavors. Could clean up better. I prefer my pumpkin beers to be pie-like but fairly clean in flavor, not syrupy.

O: I was told by some other patrons to leave this "palate-wrecker" toward the end. I was skeptical; how badly could this wreck a palate at a BARREL AGED BEER FEST? Turns out, quite badly. A very sweet beer.
