We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Rumpkin is a thick orange, as in extremely thick, somewhat bright but with no give to it. The orange-tinted head is small and develops a firm layer with some bubbling coming in as it drops. It leaves behind tight lace in light to moderate quantity, mostly in spotting.
I think my nostrils are eating pumpkin, honestly. Otherwise it has a lot of sugary sweetness and some alcoholic burn. There seems to be vanilla and wet molasses, like a syrup was made and woody spices added.
The flavor is extremely sweet, exceedingly so in fact. Spices make their play, and they do add something good but they can't do much to cut the sweetness. The alcohol stings hard, a little too hard, and it just ends up leaning too cloying and harsh even for a dessert beer.
The sweetness in the thick body make this beer too syrupy in the feel. The body ends up full, obviously sweet with no dryness balancing and the ethanolic sting hitting the tongue pretty hard.
I can't get into the beers that are this hard as much as I'd like, though it could be a good enough sipper for sure.

An amazing pumpkin beer, every time i drink it I find something else I didn't notice before. Seriously need to buy it when you see it; it will be off the shelf very shortly.

Rumpkin pours a sort of glossy garnet-sienna hue, with brilliant clarity and zero head, no matter how hard you pour it. At a eye-watering~17%, no surprises there. Looks all the world like a glass of cognac in my hand. The smell is powerful but plush and decadent, like a slap across the face with a velvet-gloved hand of iron. Massively sweet and malty. Behind the mountain of malt lies subtle authentic pumpkin aromas, but very faint spices you'd expect in a pumpkin ale. For such a high octane brew, the rum aging doesn't add to much alcohol aroma, but offers its rich character. Rum was the logical choice for such a syrupy sweet beer, what could go better than sugar cane? I think I even detect the oakiness of the rum in this. Quite an exquisite smelling beer.

The taste, wow, the taste. Again, more sugary sweetness. Everything here just adds to the massive tastes, the powerful rum tastes and its sweetness, the deep caramel, pumpkin and spiciness all overwhelm the palette. The overall impression, as alluded to in the appearance, is more a liquer or cognac than a beer. Only the bare minimum hops are used to still legally call it a beer. I love an agressively malty, sweet, highly-boozy brew, and this ranks up there with Samichlaus, my current favorite. More drinking, and I am really loving this beer. Every phase of this beer in my mouth is sublime; the opening is a blast of pumpkin syrup and solera aged rum, moving to the subtle pumpkin dn malt interplay and finish on more rum and a just that kiss of hops that brings it all together.

Wow, Avery. Avery, Avery, Avery...how did you do this? A boozy, rum soaked pumpkin ale sounds like a gimmick on paper. But this beer is a watershed in the big beer category. Amazing, top notch, world class. Beautiful.

Bottle purchased at Half Time Beverage in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Pours a golden amber color, with a small filmy head, and no lacing.

Smells like a straight shot of brown sugar and booze, lots of cinnamon and maple, and some caramelized burnt pumpkin. This one smells incredibly strong and concentrated, as I would expect.

This definitely tastes good, but it's overbearingly sweet, and hard to drink large amounts of. It's got a syrupy molasses/maple syrup quality to it that's hard to get through lots of. There's a ton of rum and vanilla creamer, burnt brown sugar, caramelized pumpkin, cognac, brandy, and burning booze. This is an extreme beer in every way, and should be approached in quite small doses.

This is thick and syrupy in mouthfeel, but kinda thin body wise. There's a pretty low level of carbonation. It's a slow sipper, and ultimately not that drinkable.

This is definitely a brewing accomplishment- but not one I'm sure needed to be accomplished. It's just too much for the sake of being too much. It does taste good, for about 2 oz or so.

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a very murky copper color. The head is around half a finger high, with an off-white shade. Given the fact that it's nearly 17%, its poor retention is unsurprising. There are some alcohol legs (but no real lacing) left on the glass, though. (2.75)

Smell: Some credit is due, as this does a decent job of smelling like pumpkin pie. I pick up a little gourd, and a huge amount of nutmeg/cinnamon. The huge spiciness accentuates the rum barrel, at least. Letting it warm up even further will expose some general alcohol. Actually, it's the spice that comes across more harshly than the booze. But it's still an intriguing nose. (3.5)

Taste: At first, it pulls off the pumpkin pie impression admirably. Lots of cinnamon and nutmeg, backed by some gourd and even some vanilla cream. The finish sees an explosion of brown sugar, molasses, rum, and leather; even some graham cracker. And yes, it's RIDICULOUSLY sweet and sugary. Having said that, it's not ridiculously sweet, sugary, and brutally harsh - it's just a big-ass sugar bomb with some nice autumnal qualities. Despite that, it has reasonable depth without being overly sloppy in its flavor profile. (3.5)

Mouthfeel: It doesn't quite burn the throat and esophagus the way Pump[KY]n or Mephistopheles did...but still, this betrays every ounce of its near 17% strength. That, and the massive body leaves behind an ass-load of residual sugar on the palate. A semblance of carbonation does at least help it go down more easily. (3)

Overall: Avery's barrel-aged beers (excluding the sours, natch) are always like manhandling a 1994 Dodge Viper in a rainstorm - big, ridiculous, but almost charmingly silly. This is no exception. It's a little less harsh than Pump[KY]n, thankfully. Sure, it's too sweet, but it also does a good job of drinking like a pumpkin pie with a shot of rum. I'll drink this again, though I probably won't buy it again because of the price point. And even if I do, I'll have to not only make sure I sit on the bottle for a couple years, but also split it with a good friend. (3.5)

Pours a clear dark orange to amber color with no head. Aroma is huge alcohol, almost mediciny. Also get some fruity esters and vanilla, along with just a slight rum hint. The taste is super sweet, like dark molasses on the front end, with some nice lingering pumpkin and spice notes. Alcohol is very present. The mouthfeel was hot and a little oily feeling, but in a nice way. Super tasty beer- I haven't had a bad barrel-aged beer from Avery yet.

Batch No.4 - Bottled on September 22, 2014

Striking brownish copper. Rum notes dominate the nose but pumpkin and other sweet notes are discernible as well. Sticky mouthfeel. The rum sweetness is also upfront in the flavor profile. Some pie spice notes come on for the finish along with the distinct essence of molasses. The alcohol gets a tad overdone at times but considering the enormous ABV, that is not a problem.

Had this as a Thanksgiving digestif a few hours after the main course and dessert. I am hoping to get another bottle to age for next year. It was excellent fresh but I believe that it has the potential to be epic with some age on it.

2014 batch, fridge temp into a snifter and allowed to warm. This is an extremely—bordering on obscenely—sweet beer. Like, it should carry a warning for diabetics. There's very minimal alcohol heat, and the rum is quite muted (except for the degree to which it contributes to the, again, extraordinary sweetness). As it warms, a bit of complexity begins to emerge, most notably in the form of an almost bacon-y aftertaste (which is a good thing). Overall, this is very tasty, but it's a bit one-dimensional and lacking the complexity I get from the truly world-class barrel-aged offerings.

Wow...totally get catsup on the nose....

Poured into a FW snifter...

A-Beautiful ruby red with a sweet lil ring around the edge of the glass...no real head to speak of.

A- Like I said...catsup...this thing is so sweet on the nose its crazy! Probably more like rum, pumpkin, molasses.

T- Catsup...I mean rum and pumpkin and molasses....something roasted...actually really good.

M- Minimal carb...

O- Pretty fine beer. If you do rum, do this....

On tap at Ginger Man NYC. First sip was "too sweet", next two or three less so. By the fourth sip I was on board. Complex flavor that balanced the high alcohol perfectly. Rum? I caught hints, which is exactly what made this a perfect beer to me. Full of subtle flavors that kept me going back and discovering more with each taste.

A: The beer is clear orange amber in color. It poured with a short white head that died down, leaving only some wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of pumpkins and pumpkin spices are present in the nose along with some hints of rum.
T: This beer tastes like pumpkin pie along with a shot of rum. No alcohol is perceptible. The rum flavors seem to get a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an exceptional pumpkin ale that manages to combine flavors of pumpkins and spices along some complementary notes of rum. This tastes more like a 9% of 10% abv beer as it hides its alcohol very well.

I'll revisit it after it's aged a bit. For me, fresh, this beer was super hot, boozy, and overly sweet. I enjoyed the spice and pumpkin aroma and flavor, but the sweetness was overpowering for me. Hopefully in time it ages into a wonderful beverage.

Batch No. 3, bottled Sept 6, 2013. Poured into a snifter, the beer is a hazy, muddled, opaque, amber-brown coloring, with no head whatsoever. Aromas of booze, pumpkin sweetness, brown sugar, woody notes, tangy caramel, and a subtle spice blend of cinnamon and nutmeg. Flavors are very layered, with a rich pumpkin bread characteristic of sweet pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg, leading the way, followed by an immediate blast of booze, both in strength and warmth. Woody and vanilla notes come through in highlights, as well as some brown sugar and heavy molasses characteristics. This thing is a beast. Slick, oily, robust bodied, with a huge warming factor as you drink. The aftertaste is surprisingly light on booze, and more of a sit down and chat with the pumpkin and spice blend. Very pleasant surprise. The finish is slick, quick, and surprisingly clean, with only the slightest candi sugar linger. Great beer!

Had this on tap at Beer Run in Charlottesville.
I dislike pumpkin beers with a passion, but this is like sweet, alcohol infused, liquid heaven.
Nothing like the average pumpkin beer, although I don't think I could drink much more than 1 at a setting, this would be perfect around the campfire, on a cool fall night.

On tap at Tiger! tiger! in San Diego. Murky dark brownish amber in the little globe glass. Not much head. The carbonation barely swims up through the swamp.

So sweet it's shocking. Every sip invokes a shiver. You keep hoping it will get better. Spicy like pie, and sweet like a misguided liqueur. If only there was a plain vanilla custard to pour this over.

This year's batch they call 18.5%. I believe it. Not quite revolting, but the 8 oz glass was more than the two of us could get through.

12oz, gold foil-capped bottle, 2014 edition, procured during GABF last month. Also the reason why our contingent broke one of the basic first-day tenets there - by having late-evening pints of this stuff at World of Beer.

This beer pours a clear, dark red brick amber hue, with one finger of wanly puffy, loosely foamy, and mostly just bubbly tan head, which leaves some streaky Gulf War tracer fire lace around the glass as things slowly, slowly recede.

It smells of rich, roasted, and certainly vegetal pumpkin flesh, meek earthy ginger, subtle nutmeg, a baba cake meets caramel pudding maltiness, surprisingly plain brown sugar, stressed barrel staves, the metallic and tropical fruit-tinged rum that causes said stress, and a soft leafy, herbal bitterness. The taste is big and sweet, full of dense, syrupy brown sugar, thick caramel malt, hot vanilla, timid seasonal spices - the nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon just overwhelmed, it would seem - goopy pumpkin leftovers, and a rather standoffish aged dark rum booziness.

The carbonation is actually quite tangible for this early in the game, though still manifesting in a mild frothiness, the body smooth, but in the manner of having signed a veritable deal with the devil - always looking over your shoulder, and all that. It finishes on the inflated sweet side, for sure, but with enough going on in the interim, before that middle-shelf rum shot hits you, to keep things more or less just this side of sane.

As during that ill-advised 'nightcap' in metro Denver, the bristling threat of this offering (not necessary to detail here, look it up, or read a label) seems to just bleed away, once you dive in with both feet. Large, fully of bloated pumpkin pie, barleywine-esque malt, and actually polite rum barrel booze. What's not to like, especially when it's drinking this well, this soon?

whoa! As billed the 2014 Rumpkin is a big hit of rum followed by a mellow pumpkin flavor. Great right away, and cannot wait to see how it ages.

Served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: Brown ale with a slight orange tint to the body. Medium bubbles with a slightly off-white head. Head initially rose to about a finger's length and settles with very even lacing.

Smell: It smells great but lacks the extra punch you will be looking for.

Taste: Complex taste, sweet and lightly spicy. Nutmeg with a hard hit of either amaretto or the sweet rum used to concoct this animal. The pumpkin is very very evident, the cinnamon feel and cakey taste makes you want to indulge for more.

Mouth: Medium carbonation that lightens up a bit before you get to the end of the glass. Ridiculously sticky, I swear you put the glass down and all you can thick of are pieces of cake or pie still in your cheeks.

Overall: What it all comes down to is this, this brew as expensive as it is an absolute delight. Worth every penny and worth the trouble looking for it. It is literally dessert in a glass. Already one of my top three pumpkins, salud!

The body appears as a dark, orange-copper color with a thick yet fizzy head. Heavy, sweet aroma with a heady mixture of rum, molasses, brown sugar, and pumpkin. Syrupy sweet flavors, heavy on rum and taffy. Heavy body; thick and chewy; viscous.

An over-the-top pumpkin ale styling that punches your senses with a heavy sweetness. There is so much sugar action going on that it does a good job of hiding the high ABV. Definitely unbalanced with the huge sweetness, but it does offer a rather varied array of flavors although the pumpkin aspect is pretty low-key. For the adventurous...
