On tap for Churchill's Renaissance 2013 at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a hazy copper with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with some fruity and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with a sour fruity flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some nice sour flavors that make it easy to drink.

Poured into an E&J Cask & Cream glass on 12/8/12

Bottled: Feb 11 2011

Rustic appearance; tobacco and copper hues. One and a half finger head drops to about 1/4th of an inch. Foam clumps at the collar and trails up to lace on the glass. Good lace.

Smells woody and funky; moderate acidity. Vinous and floral tones drift atop sweet grains and mild prairie grass notes. I really like the barrel on this one; it's clean, not musty.

Wow, the taste is a lot funkier and mustier than the aroma. Moderate amounts of sourness tempered by a spot of sugar to cut the puckering aspects. The sugars are compounded with warmth, loaded with grapes and dark fruits.

Medium body with something of a creamy feel despite gritty underpinnings and moderate carbonation. As it warms it starts to get slick with sugars and some alcohol.

While there are some decent aspects, I don't much care for this one overall. Very disheveled.

Not one of the good ones in my opinioin, served along side of the rest of these sours. Beer is yellow and mostly clear with a white head, no lacing, low retention, low carbonation.

Aroma is acetic with mild fruits and some other bright acid I can't identify.

Beer is light and dry, oaky, vinous, solvent. It is too sharp and bright, too much acetic acid. Not a repeat for me.

Pours a clear amber color with a small quick-to-recede white head that leaves some minimal lacing.

Aromas begin with lactic tartness and perhaps just a touch of vinegar. A little bit of a sour cherry aroma and some nice red wine and oak aromas. As it warms it gets a little funky, almost cheesy with increasing vinious characteristics.

The tastes begin with a great deal of vinious grape and a solid oak quality, including a fairly strong tannic and vinegar presence. As it warms there is a mild funky fruity mix of cherries and grapes, perhaps a little bit of red berry, as well.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to low carbonation. Finish is quite sour and tannic and makes the finish a bit astringent.

Overall I have had a few of these Avery sours and this we probably my least favorite to date. The vinous and oak flavor profile was a bit over the top and aggressive which says a lot considering how much I love red wine and wild ales.

12oz bottle.

Pours a murky reddish brown with a big creamy beige head that shows some lacing. The legs from the alcohol are actually noticeable, showing the higher ABV.

Aroma is heavy on the cab barrel, very vinous with red grapes alongside an earthy wood character. There is some funk coming out but maybe more lacto than brett overall in the nose. I have to say, it smells wonderful.

The taste has more funk than the nose with an initial kick that shows the brett earthiness. The backbone is sugary red grapes, blackberries and spicy yeast. The finish is all about the wine barrels - dry with lots of oaky tannins.

Mouthfeel is lively with strong carbonation and dry and almost spritzy in the finish.

This is a very good sour and definitely showing the alcohol. But, still, it's one of the better Avery barrel beers I've had. Really enjoyed this one.

Appearance: Dark copper, the color of homemade caramel. A touch of haze, but mostly clear. Head is creamy, off-white, and lingers for the duration. Pours with minimal carbonation. Touches of lacing.

Smell: Deep. Touches of wood mix with a big grape nose. Wine pulls through and rounds out the fruitiness. A slight citric edge with a lactic backing. Nice and sharp. Sweetness pervades, but is tamped down on by the biting sour edge. Barrel adds a backing earthiness. A buried note of booze in the back. Twinges of vanilla. Mild funkiness.

Taste: Damp earthiness hits right up front. Building lactic sourness on the swallow. Sweet and loaded down with the barrel characteristics. Deep, rich red wine. Leather and a big barrel/wood component. Earthy with a mild powdery funk. Grapes and overripe cherries.

Mouthfeel: Borders on full. Minimal carbonation and a lingering dryness. Drinks like a champ for >10% ABV.

Overall: Loaded with depth and character. Deceptive for the high ABV and a delight to drink. Nicely complex.

You know when you pop this that you have something special. Darker than I expected; almost like a burnt sugar color. Even a careful pour left our beer a little cloudy, but we didn't mind.

The nose is definitely something that starts the excitement in you if you are a fan of all things sour. You can feel it in your palate from a few inches away, but there is also a boozey quality in the nose.

The Cab barrels bring out a very earthy and slightly fruity quality in the beer. The alcohol hits you on the way out, just a sharp little note on the finish. You get an almost "terroir" flavor from the beer, because the wine comes out a lot (we had it pretty fresh). Good stuff

Feb. 2011.

A: Warm medium amber maple sizzurp. No head to mouth of.

S: Holy tits. So aromatic with deep funky fruity sourness. I love cab barrels. This one almost hints a tiny bourbon aroma.

T: I repeat, I love cab barrels. Richer and bolder than the nose. I can't quite give it a 5, although it's at least in the upper quartile of the sours I've had.

M: Moderate thickness. Relatively neutral one the wrecking, only very modestly drying, although I split this 12oz. Carbonation is appropriately low. Oh and btw, 11%!?!?!? -> upgrade 0.5

O: Used to celebrate. Didn't disappoint. Will definitely pursue again, 12oz wasn't enough.

Second soft pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a one-finger thick, nicely amber tinged head. The beer is a murky amber hue that shows a lightly hazed, bright cranberry red color when held up to the light. The beer has a buttery, sort of musky funkiness to it up front, but takes on a bright, almost perfectly cherry like fruitiness towards the middle and finish, but then takes a completely unexpected turn and smells distinctly of anise / black licorice somehow; this last seems to dissipate after a while, and makes me wonder if it was ever there in the first place (it was just so distinct and unexpected, which is what made it so noticeable while it was here). The fruitiness reminds me of the berry character from a fruit forward red wine. There is funky, slightly over-ripe cheese like aroma here, as well as a definite musky, funkiness (describe by many as horse blanket) that plays a quite significant role in the aroma. There is a tart acidity to this beer, it is not overly pronounced but does contribute a light acetic character that sharpens up the otherwise smooth lactic acidity. The oak character provides a spiciness and firmness to the finish that is quite woody.

The beer has a touch of sweetness to it, though only just a touch; this accentuates a distinct fruitiness that reminds me of blackberries, when coupled with the oak character it reminds me of the astringent and slightly woody blackberry seeds. The oak character is quite firm here, it provides lots of woody notes, a touch of spicy oak, some astringency to the finish as well as a tannic structure to the body. This beer is big enough that it has a viscous character to it that makes this more of a sipping beer. The carbonation provides some prickliness that helps to lighten things up just a touch. The tartness of this beer is definitely noticeable, though it is not as pronounced as I would prefer; the tartness is mostly lactic in character, but there is a touch of acetic acidity that adds a hint of harshness to the finish, and there is likely some acidity that was picked up from the barrel aging that helps to round things out here. At times this suggest at cider vinegar.

This is not nearly the beer that the Immitis is; there is not enough acidity (and I am not one that usually likes acetic acid that lightly accents this beer) , and the totality of all the components are not quite integrated nearly as well. The fruitiness could be a touch brighter, as long as the malt character played a better supporting role (the malt character in this beer seems to fall a bit flat and somehow seem a touch too thin somehow). Still, this is not a bad beer, it just doesn’t live up to the standard of the last one, from this series that I had.

Poured from bottle, bottled February 11, 2011, to a tulip glass.

A - The beer pours a bit hazy amber color with a nice 1 finger slightly off-white head with decent retention and lacing. The foam slips to a silky film.

S - A complex aroma consisting of some fruity character: raspberries, cherry. A fair amount of malt sweetness as well as vanilla.

T - Very nice flavor. The beer starts with the malt character, cherry tart, and vanilla flavors. The sour nature of the yeast soon follow and blend nicely with the nice mild bitterness. The beer finishes crisp and dry. Very good. No way I could tell it was as strong as it is.

M - Suprisingly thick and smooth and yet crisp at the same time. Good carbonation.

O - I really enjoyed this beer. A lot of the sour beers are too much and perhaps the mild nature of this beer appealed to me for that reason. I really enjoyed it.

Pours peachy orange with but a little white head surrounding it, yielding miraculous lace as I finish from my Tops goblet. Somewhat Bretty musty yeasty aroma. The taste from the get go is outstanding. A full mouthfeel of fruit, with grape in the background, olives, pickle juice, apricot. A palate cleanser. Just what the Doc ordered, thanks JMBSH.

Poured into my new belgium snifter from a 12 oz bottle. Bottled FEB 11 2011.

A- Pours a slightly hazy yellow-orange with some slight red notes. Creamy off white head swirling around in the glass. Small amounts of lacing on the glass. Looks to be glowing a red color when held to the light.

S- Super funky, nose hair curling, acidic vinegar. Amazing. Past the sourness is an amazing plethora of red wine, green apples, sour cherries, oak, berries, lemon, sweet grapes, more oak. Smells amazing.

T- Not as tart as the nose suggests, but sour as shit nonetheless. Onslaught of tart cabernet, cherries, green apple peels, buttery oak, a little bitterness, and a lingering tartness. A little bit of warming alcohol in the stomach. Hides the 10+% abv well.

M- Mouth puckering dry, thin, good carbonation.

O- Another amazing sour from Avery.

Pours a striking amber with a orangish hue. White head drops fast in my snifter leaving a bubbly crown. Good looking beer.

First thing I notice in the nose is the wine influence of the barrel. Notes of cabernet mixed with wood and subtle cherry.

Taste is strawberry, vinegar, tart cherries, all in a funky barrel finish. Alcohol only shows up with a slow warming feel.

Mouthfeel is decent. Carbonation is good but I found the body to be a ad syrupy.

Overall another quality effort in Avery's barrel-aged series.

A - Lots of big thick and rich foam grows when shaken... Brew is crystal clear amber with orange and yellow hues. Medium consistency. Some spotty lacing, head and brew mix like blood ;)

S - This one will pierce through your senses. Very Cabernet, lots of big grape. Cranberry stands out too. Lovely lemon and lime. Almost smells like it was in both Chardonnay and Cabernet barrels. Very high heat.

T - Big and RICH. Lots of aggressive peach and grape. Also some light red delicious apple, with a kick from Johnathan. Delightful-slight sour punch, but not like a Warhead. Cherry gently overcomes you when you're not paying attention too.

M - Awesome! Great carbonation! No heat burn. Dry and Rich.

O - Wonderful brew! Super glad I have more of these coming my way ;) Hopefully I hold enough self-restraint to keep away; I look forward to see how they continue to change. Very dry and perfect just like a wine barrel-aged brew should be! Nice work Avery.

Aroma is of cherries and raspberries. Some hints of Cabernet sauv from the barreling. Appearance is beautiful glowing golden amber that is somewhat translucent. Head is a tan white that laces the rim of the glass. Taste is somewhat tart and slightly vinegary sweet cherry/ Rasperry, The cab sauv taste just peeks it’s head in to say hello and then is gone just as quick. Palate is fizzy, sour and has a long delightful finish that holds the taste of wine and berries. Overall one of the best sours I have had. At 10% alc this is also one of the stronger sours I have had.

Pours a cloudy, orangish red color with small white head that disappears quickly. Scent is nice and sour with noticeable brett and sweet, red fruits. Taste is initially oaky, followed by some tart cherries. Then I get some crazy buttery flavors that make this beer stand out from any other sour I've ever had. These butter flavors seem to work for this beer. It gets more sour as the flavors mesh with your palate. Mouthfeel is smooth and velvety. Nice and mouth puckering. Drinkability is high (as long as the ABV doesn't catch up to you). Overall, this beer tasted amazing to me, and I had no idea whatsoever this beer was even half the ABV it actually is. So drinkers beware!

A: Copper red in color and topped with an egg shell white head which has decent retention and lacing.

S: Acetic bouquet burns the nostril a bit. A waft reveals aromas of white vinegar and citrus with a slightly metallic follow.

T: Brett funk and sweet metallic red table grapes. Acid up front mellows as this beers spry carbonation electrifies the tongue.

M: Carbonic

O: A disappointing beer for me with a lack of the tartness I was so hoping for. Acid is there but in an oddly only strikes the mid palate. Metallic notes being present is a huge neg for me too. Perhaps with some age this will develop into something.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours a clear amber with a limited white head, some lace.

S: Red wine barrel is clearly evident. Lots of sour cherries with a hint of cheese.

T: Vinous character is heavy. Sour cherries dominate with a hint of brown sugar.

M: Medium-bodied, well balanced with solid acidity, with a hint of spiritous alcohol on the back end.

O: The alcohol is quite well hidden here. Good flavours, nothing to blow you away, but certainly a good sour beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for the sample.

Appearance: This pours an orange amber color with golden edges and a quick fading rocky tan head that leaves a bit of lacing.

Smell: A well balanced aroma. Some soft malt sweetness, tart raspberry and cherry, and a bit of oak and cabernet as well.

Taste: Tart from the beginning. A sort of synthetic grape flavor comes from the cabernet barrels. Tart cherry and raspberry flavors, some little alcohol bite, some light malt sweetness comes in toward the end. There are some off grape/oak flavors in here that I don't care for.

Mouthfeel: Tart, somewhat acidic and vinegary, with medium carbonation and a light to medium body.

Overall: This was kind of good, kind of odd, and kind of off.

A = Caramel, almost clear. Not much near white head... Lots of spots for lace.

S - Ouch. Atringent. Harsh. Good.

T -Sour, nice, tart, appley, fun.

M - Errs to the sour, but that is the deal.... Yum.

D - Hard to drink all day, but like the chance to drink at all.

Served at SAVOR on tap into the SAVOR glass

A - A bricky reddish body with an offwhite head that yeilds decent lace.

S - Great yeasty character on the nose. There is some nice fruit notes in the nose as well - A little bit of cherry. I also pick up some oaky tones on the back end.

T & M & D - A good berry and cherry flavor in the beer. There is a great wine character to the beer as well with good oak notes and some great yeasty tones. The beer is very crisp with the perfect level of acidity. The mouthfeel is great as the beer is medium to light bodied with great carbination (all aspects that play off the crisp nature of the beer.)

O - I sat at this table at SAVOR and talked to the guy pouring and stayed there for a while - Why - Because I had 3 glasses of the stuff - So good! Get your hands on some.

Thanks to OtisCampbell for this one. Poured from a 12oz. bottle into Lost Abbey stemware. Bottled 2/11/11.

Pour yields a 1.5 finger light pink cream colored head with low retention that dissipates into a thick ring around the glass. Beer is a semi-cloudy muddy peach. Not the most attractive color. Lacing is patchy and patterned with good cling though.

Nose is sufficiently funky. Sour red fruit along with some oak notes. Wet hay with a subtle wine-like characteristic. Not the most aromatic but clean and appetizing.

Opens soft cherries. Spices up quickly with some clove and a huge tartness that erupts in the middle. Vanilla and sour cherries and raspberry notes. A touch of woodiness. End is puckering with some Brett funk. Fruity. Finish is some wine-like tartness. Aftertaste is clean. Rather intense in a good way with a nice earthy backbone. Impressive.

Light to medium bodied with ample carbonation. Crisp and lively in the mouth and goes down abrasive and puckering. Finish is filmy with a clean aftertaste. Appropriate and rather amazing considering the ABV.

That this beer is 10.3% is pretty astounding. There's almost no booziness and the alcohol is all but undetectable. Not exactly smooth but very easily drinkable and crisp and refreshing. Definitely a standout in the series.

12oz bottle, bottled 2/11/11. Pours a clear dark reddish amber with a medium off white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is a whole lot of sour - some tart fruit with some vinous alcohol and some wood.

The flavor is sweet tart and sour fruits with some wood and some vinous alcohol leading to a dry, acidic, bretty, finish. As it warms it gets a little musty and leathery. The alcohol is surprisingly well hidden. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an excellent, complex sour. It's a little on the acidic side, but overall, well balanced.

12oz foil wrapped bottle served cool into a goblet.

Dihos Dactylion pours a pretty redish brown color with good clarity. The head is fizzy and so it settles quickly.

Aroma is really what strikes me first about the beer. Before I've even poured it into the glass, the sour wild yeast makes itself known. With my nose in the glass, I get more of the dark fruit, red wine, and oak.

Flavor is also really enjoyable and full of depth. Sweet black cherries lead things off before it starts to get all sour and tart towards the middle. The cab barrels come forward with oak derrived vanilla and tannins. It actually has a pretty tannic finish too with the sour flavors coming back at the end.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with good balance for a wild ale. Not too sour to enjoy the entire bottle. The alcohol is faily mellow even after just five months of aging.

Overall a really nice sour and probably one of my favorites in the series.

Another nice, well made sour beer from Avery. Not nearly on the same level as say Cascade or Lost Abbey, but getting there. Pours a nice orangish color with a silky tan head. Nice wine barrel presenc eover sweet malts and sour yeast. More funky than sour. Clean body drinks well.
