I poured into the well-known correct glass for a dry-hopped rye saison. What? You don't know what that is? I pity you, little person! Pours copper color with a thin active off-white head. It smells like a candy store, sugar and peppermint. And tree bark. Sort of a woody-earthy thingy. The taste is dry, spicy, and hoppy. I'm not sure the smell and the taste have been introduced to each other. I get some rye bread, some sharp hops, and a little pepper. The mouthfeel is slick and fizzy. I knew a guy like that once. Overall, it has a lot of interesting stuff going on but I'm not sure its a symphony so much as it an orchestra tuning. Lots of good stuff, but all at once?

Poured into a large tulip glass a deep burnt orange infuse amber with a thinner than expected head atop.Aromas are grainy with a decent amount of funk,the rye provides just a light shot of spice.Flavors are lightly funky with some phenolic clove spice,the rye is really subdues in my opinion,it really could have counterbalanced the phenols better in my mind.Its a decent beer but the the rye could have been bigger and it would have made it more complex and fuller.

22oz bottle, bottled 5/2011. Pours a copper amber with a creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is spicy yeast with some bready malts and a little fruit (banana).

The flavor is earthy malts and yeast and a little old fruit with a bit of a zing from the hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall, an OK saison. I liked it better on draft.

The beer pours a medium amber color with a white head. The aroma is very interesting. I get the yeast and citrus notes that I expect from a saison, but I also get some toffee and a little bit of rye. The rye adds quite a bit to the aroma of the beer. The rye is also present in the flavor, as is some orange citrus, caramel, toffee and yeast notes. The beer is fairly dry overall. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Had a fresh one on tap in 2012 and had a May 2011 bottle also in 2012. The dry hopping gives a spicy floral character which obscures some of the saison yeast notes.
Spicy nose from the hops and the rye, light floral, fruit, caramel, light roast
Pours a beautiful clear dark reddish amber under a thin white finely bubbled foam cap.
Palate starts malty, big rye flavors, caramel, spicy, with a slight tang and blight, large pitted fruit. Dries on the finish with a moderate bitter hop accent.
Medium body and medium high carbonation, slightly warming.

Slightly hazy light amber in color. Thin white head. Regular and consistent lacing down the glass.

Peppery spice, yeast, and some rye along with bready and sweet malts. Interesting and unusual.

There's a lot going on in the flavor of this beer. Lots of spice and yeast, some tangy rye, a bit of barnyard funk, and a slight hint of sweet, juicy fruit. If anything, there's perhaps too much going on and too many flavors, though it certainly makes for an interesting and unique saison.

The weakest part of this beer is how it feels in your mouth. This is a high-ABV saison and I think that actually hurts this beer. It seems a bit too heavy, thick, and somewhat metallic in mouthfeel. It's not at all refreshing like i find in my favorite saisons.

An interesting and unique rye saison, and while the flavors are certainly interesting, it's not a beer that I particularly want to come back to and try again.

Pours a dark brownish-amber color with an off-white head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of dark malts with moderate amounts of rye and heavier amounts of pine and light herbal hops. Also present are light amounts of dark fruit aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Slightly dry dark malts up front are joined quickly by pine hops and slightly musty flavors. Midway through the spicy rye asserts itself before it’s pushed out by medium and dark fruits – pears with hints of raisins – that fade out into a mildly bitter ending. Mouthfeel is OK, the carbonation is a bit heavy.

Overall this was an interesting beer but I thought too much was going on and the flavors didn’t meld together very well. Worth a shot for curiousity’s sake.

A- This beer pours a clear slightly dense reddish-brown body with a rocky light tan head and a strong carbonation of tiny bubbles
. S- The clean dry green hop aroma has some spice notes to it with a brassy wheat finish and some cider characters that come through as the beer opens.
T- The soft spicy rye note takes on an odd blend of yeast character with some bad breath Abbey yeast notes that finish. Some hints of bread dough cream and fruity esters have a brassy wheat and pear ester to follow. The soft green hops are dark in the finish
. M- The medium mouthfeel has no alcohol heat until it warms quite a bit and even then it is gentle. There is a soft fizz that dries the finish a bit.
O- The Abbey yeast comes through and is a bit odd with the saison yeast hiding and an odd mix of esters and fruit character aswell. Age might help this blend but how much I don't know?

Eighteen pours amber and clear from the 22oz bottle. It has a mountain of tan head slowly bubbling thinner and lacing everything it touches. An stunningly pretty beer to look at.

From the second you start to pour you get a strong earthy spiced yeast scent mixed with a sweet fruity malt. It reaches up from the glass before even getting your nose close. On closer inspection I smell a fresh bread nose with hints of peppery spice. Aromatic and pleasing.

Taste leans away from the earthy spiced smell and lands closer to a bready malt beverage. The grain takes over but leaves some room for a tart baked apple flavor. It's good but not great. I find myself readily getting tired of the flavor and that's not good a few sips in.

The mouthfeel is the worst part of this beer. A heavy bitterness disrupts what could be a better tasting beer and ruins the finish with it's aggression. There is an intentional dryness from the rye that I also dislike which is a pity because the taste had something going with the Belgian yeast strains. All in all not a bad beer but one I'd stay away from if given other options.

I had this on tap a few weeks ago and enjoyed it but didn't give it a review so I thought I'd try it from the bottle.

Bomber served cool into a goblet.

Eighteen is a light redish brown color with thick head and good retention.

Aroma is a little unusual. When I saw that it was dry-hopped, I expected more of a punchy, fresh, hoppy character. It's actually the yeast and the rye that seem to come out more in the nose than the hops.

Flavor is more closely related to a rye beer than a saison. A rich malty backbone with caramel and toffee overlain with the spicy/peppery rye and saison yeast traits.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well-carbonated. The alcohol seems strong for 8%+ but the spice tends to have that effect.

Overall not as strong an offering as I originally thought from the draft version. The combination of rye and saison is a spice-lovers dream but this takes it a little too far for my liking. Still probably one of the better anniversary beers from Avery in recent memory.

Pours a bountiful, puffy off-white head that lasts a long time. The color of the liquid is cloud rusted orange/brown.

The aroma is if an interesting, complex, hard-to-put-your-finger-on-it variety. And I like it. Somewhat nutty (peanutty, actually), with an obvious rye spiciness, a citrus peel character, banana like a dunkel weizen, and some seriously earthy tones from the, count 'em, five Belgian yeasts used here.

Nothing unusual found in the taste that I wouldn't have expected from the aroma, other than the fact it seems even more complex and beguiling on the tongue. Where the yeast begins and the hops and rye end is just about impossible to determine. And more dunkel weizen-ish banana. Everything is mingled so well...but you'll still get jabs of citrus here, a bit mouth of soil/earth there, and the rye definitely enfolds over everything. Rye even gets slightly coarse at times, but then maybe it's the labeling that is in error. It doesn't drink like a Saison/Farmhouse, and really doesn't drink like anything else I've ever had. MAYBE a rye-steeped Dubbel, but basically this is something quite unique.

Texturally I found this beer really interesting. Starts extremely slick, even creamy, then carbonation the wells up to provide quite a bit of tingle, and it all merges together to remain vibrant on the tongue. It's buoyant and medium-bodied with a bit of stick. Leaves a heavy aftertaste of rye in the finish.

Fuck styles. Sometimes, anyway. This beer is what it is...and what it is, on my tongue anyway, is a seriously complex and original beer from a brewer that rarely makes a misstep. A must-try unless you are a stick-to-the-rules style freak.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a clear tulip glass.

Appearance: Slightly hazy medium brown in color, with a one and half finger foam head that settled to a frothy cap and left good sticky lacing.

Smell: Yeasty spices like clove and nutmeg, mixed with some rye and citrus hops. Sweetness from malts underneath. Complex and inviting.

Taste: The invitation of the smell extends to the flavor. The rye and hops are up front with very little bitterness, then the rye and roasted malts kick in to smooth things out and the yeasts add a good spiciness. Finishes semi-dry.

Mouth Feel: Medium body and good carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Overall: A very interesting take on the Saison style. The rye and dry hopping really add to the yeast varieties and make this one really complex and unique. I like this beer a lot and will grab at least a couple more bottles before it's gone.

Had this on-tap shortly after release and thought it was dreadful, let's see if the bottle is an improvement:

Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Troubadour tulip.

Rust and burnt sienna body with lighter orange-brown highlights. An active finger of suds coronates the glass with a messy cosmic latte crown. Fine sticky lacing, suitable retention.

Root beer, rye bread, a complex yet gentle mess of phenols and biscuits (both sourdough and English tea) make up the nose.

Bubblegum, banana, cheap tea, zucchini bread, roast corn, and toffee on the palate. A low grassy bitterness helps offset the sweet yeasty/buttery notes. Hints of diacetyl? Perhaps some ill-placed orange zest from hops as well? Finishes medium-dry with an odd aftertaste.

Creamy, soft, and almost but neither effervescent or medium-bodied.

An excess of specialty malts and an excess of yeast strains lends an unfocused quality to the flavor profile. The rye helps tie things together, but it doesn't elevate anything. While there are good flavors in here as well, I find this ale to be less than the sum of its parts.

I hardly ever buy Avery beers...maybe because I don't see that many in Texas but when I saw this I wanted to get it. I love things dry-hopped and I like the saison style. Only good things could come from this beer.

I drank this at an Italian restaurant and had it poured into a glass of theirs, a sort of a tall goblet. It looks lovely, with a frothy-creamy and off-white head that has some good retention. It leaves a good amount of lacing as well. Color is a bit cloudy and a dark bronze.

It's very citrusy in the nose, mango. It's obvious, because it's dry-hopped, that the hops are strong, pretty grassy. The rye comes out a lot too and gives a sort of rye whiskey aroma, though not boozy. The Belgian yeasts add a bready aroma.

Taste-wise this was interesting. The rye makes it taste different than most beers, kind of a woodsy spice. Belgian yeasts are throughout that are bready and there's plenty of fruitiness like mango and apple. Plenty of booze comes out in the finish. While this is an interesting beer I don't think it suits the style very much.

The mouthfeel is a bit too heavy for my liking, according to the style. It has a medium body and feels a bit creamy, thicker at the beginning but the end is drier. Carbonation is medium.

Although this beer is interesting, mostly with the rye and dry-hopping, it doesn't taste like a saison. A saison should be lighter-bodied, with slight peppery hops and nice pale malts with bready yeasts, while being refreshing. Not that every beer NEEDS to be exactly to the style, but I just didn't think it fit. I wanted refreshment but this saison wasn't. It reminded me more of a Belgian dark ale. The alcohol presence was surprising to me too. This isn't a bad beer though. It's a bit unique and interesting but it just didn't impress me too much.

"Dry Hopped Rye Saison"? Where to begin?

It looks like a rye beer might, with a dark crimson tinted deep-copper colored body. The creamy head is a light khaki. The head drops shortly but it leaves some very nice walls of tiny spots of lace behind.

The aroma displays rye, that's for sure. Rye and deep caramel malt. Hops? Yes, but I can't make out what they might be through the malt and yeast. It's hard to tell. Are they spicy, or is that the malt? Or the yeast? Are they fruity, or is THAT the yeast? There's definitely something there... I'm gonna go with floral and grassy.

On to the taste. It's spicy up front with dark fruit, deep caramel that's almost like burnt sugar, and spice as you cross the middle. That might be from the yeast, but it's at least partially from the rye. Pretty nice. The fruit flavors work well with it (dark raisin, black cherry, dried figs). From there it just seems to drop away. There's not a lot of bitterness left over, but it's dry. Some clove lingers, as well as some general spice, a flicker of that same non-descript hop from the aroma, and a light touch of dull chocolate.

In the mouth it's quite nice. It's medium bodied with a dextrinous edge, and it becomes quite creamy as the carbonation is released and it 'foams' in the mouth.

Overall it's a little bit much that somehow becomes not enough.
