I was pretty disappointed in this beer. I love Avery. The Maharaja and IPA are some of my favorites. I was really excited to try this beer, but it just did not impress me.
It looks like a RIS. It poured nice and black, but just a little mocha head. There was almost no lacing to speak of, just some oily residue.
It smell pretty good. Lots of chocolate, a little caramel, some coffee, and maybe a hint of raspberry. Though was also a slight alcohol burn at the end which I wasn't crazy about.
I was hit in the face with that alcohol burn that I got in the nose. It pretty much overwhelmed all other flavors. I could taste a little bit of the chocolate and coffee, but they were pretty much the only flavors that were strong enough to shine through.
Given how big this beer is, it actually felt slightly thin. The alcohol kept everything from being smooth and creamy like a good RIS should be.
Overall, this was a beer I think Avery just tried to make too big. It tastes like the 11% that it is. Other high ABV RIS's just incorporate the alcohol so much better than the Czar. Maybe some barrel-aging or cellaring (I've got one in the cellar now) would do this bad boy some good. It wasn't a terrible beer by any means, just a little disappointing I guess.

2011 vintage. Poured on tap and served in a snifter, the beer is jet black, with subtle ruby highlights, and a dense, foamy, dark tan head. Aromas of coffee and booze forward, with old world fruit sweetness, woody notes, and an underlying coffee bitterness. Beast. Flavors are a blast of rich sweetness on the tongue, with black strap molasses leading the charge, followed by cocoa nibs, bitter coffee, vanilla, oak spice, and a ribbon of booze. Holy hell, this is big! Smooth and velvety in mouth, with a rich, darkly sweet aftertaste of molasses and brown sugar. Slick, smooth finish. Wow...this is a greay beer!

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice creamy tan head that dies down moderately slow and leaves some nice lacing.
Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, coffee and some dark fruit (mainly raisins).
Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some sweet roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, a slight nuttiness, vanilla and raisins.
Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.
Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas.
