Notes/Commercial Description:
In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Duvel Tulip Style Glass. Liquid portion comes out black. It's almost completely opaque except for the edges. Right around the edges it is very dark brown. Nice dark brown colored head that comes up big after a reasonably hard pour. Good lacing, sticks around quite awhile.

Smell is good. STRONG bourbon notes, with plenty of hints of vanilla and oak. Doesn't beat around the bush, not much outside that.

Taste is truly excellent. Plenty of bourbon, vanilla, oak, slight semi-sweet chocolate, and plenty of roasted malts. The best part about the flavor is it is 100% perfectly balanced the whole way through.

Mouthfeel is spot on. For a beer that's 17.42%, you wouldn't quite expect it from Uncle Jacob. Well balanced, perfectly smooth, and a great carbonation level. Very well balanced with a warming finish. Love this beer, very drinkable a perfect sipper. Avery nailed it when trying to make a good barrel aged stout, this is wonderful. Overall one of the best Barrel Aged Beers I've had, but wouldn't expect less from Avery.
