Notes/Commercial Description:
In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

A: Pours pitch black with a medium sized dense brown head. Leaves a solid wall of lacing as it slowly fades away.

S: I can smell the bourbon from across the room after I pour it. Strong toffee, caramel, brown sugar and vanilla. There is roasted malt hiding behind it with some char and chocolate mainly.

T: Up front is stinging bourbon with again, toffee, brown sugar and caramel. Light vanilla is present throughout the beer. Smooths out surprisingly quickly after the initial bourbon hit. Big chocolate and caramel in the middle. Fades into a vanilla oakiness with hints of chocolate and a little char. Vanilla lingers nicely in the aftertaste.

M: Thick, heavy, and syrupy. Surprisingly smooth.

O: My first impression is that this reminds me a lot of Black Tuesday. This has a bit stronger bourbon hit up front, but with less molasses than BT. This is a delicious exercise in extreme barrel aged stouts.
