In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

Pours a thick, pitch black like motor oil. Medium dark tan/brownish head that goes down at a steady pace. Scent is sweet bourbon up front. A ton of it in fact. Some intense booziness as well. Smells like a booze chocolate cake. A ton of toffee and nuttiness. Taste is boozy chocolate cake and sweet brown sugar with some burnt sugar malt flavors. Intense bourbon flavor with a great amount of toffee and vanilla. Subtle coffee flavors with mocha and more vanilla. Boozy warming sensation. Mouthfeel is full bodied and syrupy. Drinkability is fairly high for how big it is. Overall, this is a very tasty beer that is somewhat comparable to Black Tuesday. Not really as well-balanced though.
