In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

APPEARANCE: Absolutely black as night, zero light is getting through this one. A thin, coffee-colored head appeared and then quickly vanished, but it left a ring of foam around the edges of the surface. No lacing.

SMELL: Excellent smell, but lacking in strength compared to some other Bourbon barrel aged stouts I've tried. The typical oak, vanilla and toffee are there with a bit of boozyness as well. This smells like Bourbon.

TASTE: This reminds a lot of Bourbon County Stout, but a little sweeter. Strong on the chocolate, but vanilla slowly creeps in getting stronger and stronger. Oak flavors are very pleasant and help to balance out the huge malty and sugary flavors. A tiny touch of lemon and cherry also lurks somewhere in here.

MOUTHFEEL: This is motor oil in the best sense of the word. It never gets mouthcoating, but it is nice and rich, exactly how the style should be.

OVERALL: This is simply a very well-done barrel aged stout. A great beer, one of Avery's best efforts.
