Pours a jet black opaque color with a frothy quarter inch mocha head that slowly dissipates into a thin layer.
Dark chocolate, espresso, roast malt, and dark fruit begin the aroma. Further investigation reveals a substantial soy presence, asking with vanilla and oaky bourbon.
Rich dark chocolate and bruised cherries are accented by coffee grounds and burnt breadcrust, which hit mid palate and carry into a somewhat oaky finish. Underlying notes of prunes, raisins, and dates add complexity. Dark fruits eventually dominate the flavor after several sips. Bourbon is present, but not overpowering. The finish is lightly bitter.
Body is fairly thick and slick, with minimal carbonation and significant alcohol heat, which ignites in the throat and carries into the gut.
Great chocolate character initially, but dark fruit notes become a little overpowering. Of course it's a little hot...a lot hot, actually, but mighty tasty. Wish the chocolate or roast were a little more prevalent.
