In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

12oz (bottled 3/27/2012) into a snifter. Pours an oily obsidian black w/ a thin mocha head that settles quickly, not so much lace as legs on the glass.

Aroma is deep and boozy. laden with bourbon, molasses, prunes, smoke, and more bourbon.

Taste is syrupy sweet, dark and roasty, bitter, boozy. Sugary dried dark fruits, molasses, chewy caramel, some vanilla, charred oak. A hint of cabernet.

Mouthfeel is slick and oily, thick and chewy. Strong alcohol heat.

Overall, as expected, this is an over-the-top imperial stout. A little too sweet and syrupy for my taste, but it's a unique experience nonetheless.

2014 Release

App- This right out of the gate was one of the more dense and black stouts I have seen. A lush pour with a creamy look behind it with a dark brown head that was a bit ringed. The edges were dark brown and the inside was a lighter tan.

Smell- This had a lot going on in the nose. A big chocolate bomb with a good amount of oak, vanilla and some oats with a big amount of whispy booze.

Taste- A very sweet drinking stout. A big amount of molasses and bourbon with some sweeter vanilla on the first sip. To me this was a bigger and sweeter version of Mephistopheles. This was a bit one dimensional to me and over the top with booze vs. layered.

Mouth- A good medium body. A bit thin for the ABV and size of this beer. A fairly creamy almost thin medium carbonation. A good amount of sweet dark fruits remain on the finish.

Drink- Good beer, wanted and expected more of this one. As I mentioned. A bit one dimensional with more bourbon and molasses vs a backing flavor.

S: wow! this smells amazing! i get a fair amount of bourbon, and oak upfront, but not in an overpowering way. roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruits, coffee. simply incredible.

A: great appearance. pours jet black like motor oil, good head for such a high alcohol beer. deep tan.

T: this is delicious! soft bourbon, oak, vanilla followed up dark chocolate, coffee and dark fruits. no taste of the alcohol. dark chocolate lingers on the palate after each sip

M: thick and creamy! just like a barrel aged stout should be.

O: this is incredible! this is now one of my favorite beers! its a shame its $15 for 12 oz. the price is the only flaw!

2014 bottle from a great trader, poured July 3, 2014. Pours pitch black with a one finger dark brown head, nice and creamy. Aroma of chocolate, mellow bourbon, vanilla, caramel, anise, oak char. Reminds me a lot of Black Note on the nose. Very rich smelling yet not over the top. Flavor follows with a nice vanilla chocolate caramel note, dark fruits, long roasty finish with lingering vanilla, definite char flavors from the oaky bourbon barrels. Huge rich mouthfeel that is right on the nose with low medium carbonation. While this has a hard yet more on the fruity side than I tend to like in the style, there is no question this is world class. The bourbon barrels only accent the flavors and this isn't just some huge bourbon bomb. Nicely done.

Apparently the brewer's 6th great uncle Jacob was the first to call his whisky "bourbon."

APPEARANCE: A nice black pour yields a one finger, slightly thinner, foamy tan head with lousy retention. Head fades quickly to a splotchy wisp and ring. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head fades very quickly to a ring only. Ring remains all the way leaving no lacing down the grass. Black beer, but mediocre head.

SMELL: Bourbon, oak, with vanilla, light grapes or red wine as well. Interesting and different. Touches of milk chocolate as well. A bit of port.

TASTE: Quite boozy. Bourbon, oak and port wine up front. Some spicy alcohol through the middle into a big and lingering finish of bourbon, red wine, alcohol, vanilla notes and some dark chocolate too. Quite boozy with lots of alcohol and port flavors.

PALATE: Lighter body, thinner, with higher levels of carbonation. A bit prickly on the palate, goes down okay and finishes somewhat sticky on the palate. Some decent heat lingers. Spicy alcohol lingers.

OVERALL: This is okay, but it's a bit too boozy for my liking. Body is a bit thinner than I'd like for the style as well. Lots of wine and alcohol at the expense of the stout qualities. Would actually like to to try the base stout on its own. Thanks again for the treats Doodler!

A- Pitch black body, foamy tan head that stays around for a unexpectedly long time.

S- Huge sweet bourbon, caramel, sweet sugary syrup, hints of oak, roasted malts.

T- Big bourbon sweetness, very sugary, big caramel notes, just enough wood presence, some chocolate. Absolutely huge flavor.

M- Full bodied, medium carbonation, lingering bourbon sweetness left behind in the mouth.

O- Just a huge, robust, thick bourbon stout that dominates the taste buds. Reminds me of BCBS with the huge flavor.

Not sure when/where I first had this. This review is for a recent tasting at City Tap House, Philly, PA.

Viscous black pour, with a small brown head that sank to a wispy layer of bubbles, some minor lacing clinging to the glass for a second or two when swirled. Nice big stouty aroma, dark malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, barrel notes. The taste was good, but didn't quite live up to the aroma, rich malts, mostly sweet with a background roasty bitterness, bourbon-soaked oak with a dash of vanilla and toasted coconut, notes of dark dried fruits and a hint of smokiness. Body was on the fuller side of medium, robust mouthfeel, and pretty strong with booze, as you might expect for a 14+% beer (not unusual for Avery). Doesn't quite stack up to some of the bigger names in the world of barrel aged stouts, but in and of itself, this is still a very good brew.

Smells like deep, deep roasty espresso with a shot of Hershey's syrup and a cherry on top. Tastes much the same. Maybe even sweeter than BCBS, with more fruit too. I'm getting grapes, cherry and a ton of dark fruit. A little whiskey around the edges.

As much as the roasty notes factored into the nose, they take a back seat to big fruit sweetness on the palate. Some chocolate ice cream too. This beer is BIGGG. Clings to your mouth like syrup. It's almost a little too sweet and I'm begging for some char. Best to treat this one like a dessert beer.

Thanks be to Blindpiggie for this one... The new 2013 release of Uncle Jacob's is a stout that transcends the taste buds, and takes them on a journey to the beer drinkers equivalent of Valhalla. It possesses the caramel qualities of a BCBS and Parabola, while also hinting at the chocolate dreaminess of Odells' Lugene. As Avery is prone to do (Mome), the high ABV is balanced out with an elegant sweetness that can really only be matched by the artisans at Goose Island.The barrel is incorporated in a way that is, well, completely sublime. My strongest recommendation on this one...it is the perfect Bourbon-Barrel aged stout.
Edit june 2014...The last release of Uncle Jacob's was extremely underwhelming. It lacked the complexity of past vintages, and was just ok.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black with a fine half finger light brown head with great retention and lacing. Delicious aroma of dark caramel and toasted malt, bourbon, dark dried fruit, chocolate truffle. Flavor follows, with dark toasted malt with little char, vanilla, bourbon, molasses, hints of chocolate and coffee, kinda boozy. Heavy bodied, almost syrupy, but with pleasant carbonation. A really nice bourbony imperial stout with complex flavor and perhaps a bit more booziness than expected (common with big Avery beers, I think). But after a few sips, all is forgiven. This seems like a prime candidate for aging and I will do so, if I can ever find more. Man, I love bourbon and beer together.

Holy crap this pours with unbelievable viscosity! Thick, rich and incredibly dark this stout is like a syrup capped with an equally thick brown head.

The aroma has immense character with rich and creamy qualities. Molasses, caramel, deep chocolate, coconut, vanilla, oak bourbon, slight toffee, marshmallow and tinges of Graham cracker malt all make appearances in the nose.

The flavors are thick and full with a full complement of oak and creamy chocolate. Light bourbon, vanilla, coconut and caramel follow at mid palate. This finishes with a tangy dark fruit, prune and raisin, with just a little alcohol.

The feel is super thick, very creamy but there is a quarter point lose on the tangy alcohol finish that hangs on to the tongue.

I had huge expectation and Damn I'm impressed. This really was fantastic.

Appearance: Black to brown in color with a large viscous ring. Light brown carbonation which dissipates quickly. The beer has legs as you sip it clings as it collapses.
Aromatics: The beer is clearly fueled with bourbon as it envelopes the majority of the aroma. There is a big alcohol aroma, a light vanilla and light toffee all coming from the barrel. The next odor is the fruit which is dark mostly prunes and some black cherries.
Flavor: So many flavors in this beer it's really quite a beauty. The front of my tongue is just hammered with sweet sugars. Then the big dark prunes and cherries. Coffee flavors are clearly found with bitter chocolates. The alcohol is there adding to every flavor.
Mouthfeel: The body is very heavy with very viscous oils. The beer has an almost burdensome chew to it as the sugars and body just stick to my tongue, checks, roof, tonsils.

Bottle poured into a stone snifter. Bottled 2/2014

Pours a thick midnight black/used motor oil look with mocha head. Aroma is intoxicating - heavy bourbon but so wonderful at the same time. Lots of vanilla, some light chocolate and roast and toasted coconut. Taste is much of the same with lots of alcohol and sticky mouthfeel and more heat from the alcohol, tons of alcohol. Overall this is a damn good bourbon barrel stout, it is certainly comparable with some of the big names out there like BCBS and Blacknote, although still a small step behind but certainly better than most, just a bit too much alcohol. However the outrageously high price certainly takes it down a notch.

Pours pitch black and viscous with a quickly fading mocha head with ruby highlights. Bourbon hits the nose first, followed by dark chocolate, dark fruit, and coffee. Lots of bourbon on the palate along with cocoa and quite a bit of alcohol heat. Medium bodied with little carbonation. Overall, this is an outstanding BA stout, but at 17% ABV, it's a bruiser!

Poured 12oz bottle into New Belgium globe

A-Pours motor oil black with a small dark tan / burnt orange head.

S-The aroma has caramel, roast, bourbon, vanilla, licorice, booze, coconut, and oak.

T-The flavor starts with dark caramel, cocoa, vanilla, bourbon, heavy roast, earthiness and alcohol.

M-The mouthfeel has medium body with mild flowing carbonation.The finish show some char, sweetness, tart apple and anise.

O-Really nice imperial stout. Different from others.

Batch No. 3 - Bottled on February 4, 2014

Pours a dark brown to black color with at least a finger of tan head that enjoyed some lengthy retention. The nose has notes of bourbon. The body is full-bodied, sticky and creamy. The flavor profile leads off with a modest sweetness that is reminiscent of molasses. This initial blast is followed by wholesome roasted bitterness. The alcohol is a bit hot on this offering; this is definitely the type of beer that would be suitable for aging.

Had this stout at the bar at Avery's brewery. Also had the pleasure to meet the sales manger, and a couple of the brewers that were working there, that were also from NH & VT just like me. This is a great beer and it tasted even better being right there when it is made and where it is made. The sales manger was really a great guy and gave a mixed beer and juice drink he was having plus a special bottle of Kaiser to take home. The Avery stop was part of a four day, 16 brewery tour that my brother and a couple of other buddies did to Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins. Great trip....

Poured into a red wine glass at cellar temperature. February 2014 bottling.
A - Pours an inky black color with a single finger of chocolate brown head. The head quickly dissipates leaving a faint lacing.
S - Bourbon, hops, chocolate and toasted coconut.
T - Sweet chocolate up front, tangy bourbon in the middle and a faint tang of booze on the finish with a very well balanced taste that hides well the almost 15% alcohol.
M - A very pleasant rich, thick mouthfeel with a slightly oily quality.
O - Overall one of the best stouts I have ever tasted. Highly recommended, especially if you like them a tad on the sweet side.

2015 Review of 2014 Vintage:
A, S - Similar to last year.
T - Smoother than last year with more prevalent hops and less prevalent alcohol/bourbon.
M - Same
O - I liked it a little better as produced that at 1 year. I have several others to try out in the coming years. 4.25 currently.
2015 Vintage, Batch 4, 16.9% abv:
A - Poured into a Lost Abbey snifter at cellar temperature. Pours a slightly murky dark black color. The 2 fingers of mocha colored head. The head lingers for a while and leaves a long lasting tan lacing. 4.25
S - Smells quite roasted with coffee and chocolate tones. The bourbon and booze are strangely hard to smell over the coffee. Mixed in is some molasses sweetness. 4.5
T - Booze up front with the strong hop flavor I associate with Avery. There is also quite a bit of malt but the hops win out. 4.0
M - The mouthfeel is quite thick and rich and leaves a good coating on the tongue. 4.5
O - Compared to batch 3, this one is less balanced and harsher. I will cellar the rest and see how they are in year or two. 4.25

Poured a 12 oz bottle with a bottling date of 2/2014. Look is a deep brown/black, with an oily appearance and a small khaki head. The smell is sweet with a strong molasses and chocolate scent. Taste was very sweet up front with strong flavor of milk chocolate and maple syrup. You catch a bit of alcohol heat on the finish, but it is welcome to balance the sweetness. This is a sticky beer, leaving a sweet coating on the lips that lingers long after the last sip. Overall I enjoyed this beer, although it was a bit sweeter than I normally prefer.

First Beer Review!
So here we go

A: Poured into a DFH 120 snifter. Pours so black that the sun can’t pass light through it. It yields a darker tan 1/2 finger head that dissipates almost immediately with little to no lacing on the glass.

S: As soon as you crack the bottle you can smell the immediate coffee and chocolate up front. Strong nose of bourbon after it sits for a minute.

T: Intense bourbon up front with lots of coffee on the back of the tongue. Alcohol hits hard, then backs off. It leaves quite a burn in the back of the throat but this was expected after seeing the 16.53% ABV on the bottle. There is a little chocolate and vanilla as this beer warms.

M: Lots of carbonation up front. Still has a good syrupy mouthfeel, very chewy.

O: I know people will compare this BBS to BCBS, and they have the right to do so. They are beers brewed in the same style with their own profiles. This one is an excellent representation of a bold BBS. Good flavor, a bit much on the alcohol, and a pretty solid mouthfeel. Overall, Well done Avery.

A: black with deep tan head that rises from depths, covers the surface, then collects at sides, leaving decent lacing. Swirls of carbonation stay on the surface throughout the pour.

S: alcohol essence over roasted chocolate smell, with the barrel woodiness also coming through. The smell has a more tart, fruity nature than if expect.

T/M: starts a little sweet (like BCBS) and a little chocolatey, but transforms into a dark-cherry/chocolate taste, with a bit of tartness that would come with a cherry taste. As the beer warms, this taste difference isn't quite as strong, and does portray a more classic bourbon barrel taste. A slightly resinous bitterness comes in when the beer is cooler, but is more subdued as it warms.

O: a very strong offering. My first few tastes I was thinking it might top my favorite BBS, but it doesn't quite reach that level. It's cost might prohibit me from buying it again, however.

Bottle poured into snifter.

Pitch black with low carbonation. Light lacing. Smell was sweet bourbon, oak and chocolate.

Taste was alot of bourbon up front, with the oak and chocolate in the middle followed by some heat. The heat is fair considering the amount of alcohol that this carries. Later on as it warmed up you could pull out the vanilla and chocolate a bit more.

Alot of people would compare this to BCBS but I beg to differ, this is a solid aged stout but the flavors are not nearly as bold.

Fantastic stout however the price is a bit unattractive considering it costs almost the amount of a 4pack of BCBS.

I will sit on my remaining bottles to see how this develops.

appearance: Deep dark brown. A little reddish gown hints around the edges when held to light. Impressive mocha head especially for a monster of a stout.
smell: A decadent bourbon, dark chocolate, malt, and dart fruit dessert.
taste: and all of the promise of the nose is delivered.
overall: This ain't nuthin but good. Rich, bad-ass, transcendent. Holy shit. Fwiw, alcohol is there but amazingly well masked for such a beast.
I realize there are some that argue all 5's are impossible. This beer for me could not get any better. Nothing should be added or taken away imo and so I have to got with perfect.

This is from notes at the Extreme Beer Fest in Boston, 3/22/14. I know what you're thinking - how can this be accurate? Well I'll tell you. This is the 2nd beer I had and I started with a washed out glass.

It was bottle poured by one of the lovely ladies employed by Avery. Pours thick and viscous, like motor oil. No real head apparent.

Smells like mahogany, soy, actual motor oil.

Taste is... well its a world class beer. 16% ABV is not obvious, not boozy at all. There is a lot going on here, chocolates, coffees, toffee/caramel/soy. This is one of three beers I had that day that actually had me close my eyes. I went back for another pour, I think that's a faux pas, but I don't care.

In the mouth is very round, well balanced, and thick as molasses. Perfect.

Overall this is one of the best stouts I've ever had. Try this if you have the opportunity and you're a fan of the style.

(2013 vintage)

The beer comes in a black color with a coffee brown head.

The aroma immediately hits of bourbon soaked cherries, plums, dark figs. It also has strong notes of 2014 Bourbon County with lots of molasses, dark dark chocolate, and vanilla and bourbon on the back.

On the flavor, again follows of 2014 Bourbon County. A burnt caramel and brown sugar note up front , along with a burst sweetness with dark fruit of sweet cherries, figs, berries. Then onto a theme of bourbon heat, vanilla, a touch of coconut. Then onto a roasty bitterness along with espresso.

The balance of heat, sweetness, and roasted along with the heavy barrel character is incredible. A bit thinner and hotter than Bourbon County, but stands up there with complexity.
