In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

This is an absolutely delicious beer. I thought it would not be ready to drink yet. Was I ever wrong. Very tasty and well-balanced now.

12 oz. bottled on Feb 13, 2015.

A: Black. Not hardly light evading black hole dark, but very dark indeed. Caramel colored head that stuck around much longer than expected for a 16.9% monster.

S: Boozy, as expected. Bourbon follows, vanilla, roasted malts.

T: A little harsh; alcohol is definitely there, but the flavor is what really stands out. Classic BA imperial stout. Big roasted malt, bourbon, vanilla, perfectly sweet.

M: Tongue coating, prickly yet smooth. Full bodied.

O: Enjoyable for sure. Probably needs some time to let the flavors mature a bit. Alcohol presence can be a bit much at times but the excellent taste makes up for this. It is pricey, but worth buying one for now and one for later.

Almost on par with Tweak. A really good, albeit expensive, BA stout.

Really good, but I can see no reason why, even with the elevated ABV, it should be almost twice the price of its in-class competitors...

I feel like I'm privy to a secret unknown by the general populace, but this beer is, for me, the perfect barrel aged stout.

Very impressive beer, rich, roast malt flavors of coffee, chocolate, tobacco-like toasty flavors. The bourbon and alcohol are both there, but neither are overpowering. sweet notes of caramel and oak in the finish. very good stout not sure if i would get it again just because its so expensive but a very high quality stout.
