In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

12 oz bottle poured into tulip.

A- Dark black, thick, and sticky with no head. No carbonation noticeable. The thickness of this one really stood out for me.

S- Off the nose, the sweetness was most apparent. Lots of chocolate, mocha, and some caramel. Hints of coffee, vanilla beans, and smooth bourbon and oak as well. Definately some roasted malt and grain and followed by some burnt toast and smoke.

T- Big beer here. Lots of rich sweetness in this brew. The chocolate, coffee, and vanilla is very strong. Bourbon and wood are also very present. Most of the smells also come across in the taste here. Its quite strong as far as the sweetness and bourbon go, but in a very smooth and warm way. Hints of leather. warm brandy, and maple syrup in there too.

M- Very thick, especially when served near room tempature. Pretty complex to pull all the flavors out of the rich creaminess. Very sticky and about as full bodied as possible. No carbonation. As thick as this beer is, it hid the alchol very well and just gave some warmth rolling off the tongue and down the body.

O- Was wanting this for a while and it lived up to its hype in my opinion. This is about as thick and sweet a brew comes, but very tasty. Seems very limited so Im not sure I'll see it again, but I'd definately buy it again if possible.

This is a beautiful bourbon stout. Chocolaty, roasted malts, bourbon. Super thick but really smooth for the ABV. One of my favorites.
