Notes/Commercial Description:
In the quest to create a collection of barrel-aged beers to be reproduced annually, Avery Brewing Company is releasing Uncle Jacob’s Stout, the second member of its Annual Barrel Series. The collection began with Rumpkin rum barrel-aged pumpkin ale in the fall of 2011, and now continues with this 17.4% ABV stout that was aged in first-use Bourbon barrels for 6 months. While the Avery Barrel-Aged Series features one-time-only batches, such as the recent Muscat d’Amour and Récolte Sauvage, the Annual Barrel Series features a selection of cellarable barrel-aged beers that fans can return to and get to know every year.

Look: Opaque black with a mocha colored head. Nice head retention with minimal legs. Poured like motor oil! Smells: Pungent chocolate and bourbon notes come pouring out of the bottle! In the glass I'm getting strong bourbon, sweet chocolate, lots of barrel, vanilla notes, roasted malt, and more bourbon. Smells sticky and sweet. Warm on the nostrils with a deep inhale like a liquor.

Taste: On the attack are deep bourbon and vanilla notes followed by dates covered in chocolate, more vanilla, huge oak barrel notes, roasted malt, slight smoke, and more sweet chocolate and bourbon

Mouthfeel: Thick! Hits the tongue like oil and covers the mouth! The oak barrel notes dry on the tongue allowing the vanilla and chocolate notes to linger. The finish is super dry.

Overall: Wow! This is the definition of a winter warmer. Huge beer but stays surprisingly complex. Definitely stays on the sweet side of the stout family with the big vanilla and chocolate notes but still retains the roasted malt on the dry finish. This is a big beer and definitely worth a try for the experience alone. Only complaint is the finish is a bit too dry and the body fluctuates a bit between the sweet and smoky roasted malt that could be a bit more balanced
