Had this in October 2013, I think at Hollingshead. Pours a light red color! Didn't see that coming. 1/2" off white head. Average retention. Lemon bar caramel is the nose.

Taste is quite bitter. Is this a red ipa? Comes close. But the alcohol is dialed up and noticeable. Definitely drops a sticky mouthfeel, all that pine and caramel dominating every aspect of this beer. This was one of those big ass dipas that really did kind of age like an American barleywine despite the joke about such a thing. Seems like a big dose of Chinook.

There used to be a lot of beers like this. Hopsickle comes to mind. Near double digit abv, mad amounts of crystal malt, giant bitterness, sticky caramel feels all the way through. Kind of feels like they took Maharajah and imperialized it even more. Not much difference between the two I thought, just this was a bit hotter.

Appearance: Pours a crystal-clear, yellow-gold body with a solid inch of off-white foam up top.

Smell: Twenty is hoppy on the nose, smelling of guava, papaya and varied citrus fruits with underlying earthy herbaceousness. Sugar-coated pale malts underneath. Small shake of liquor gives a sense of implied warmth.

Taste: Honey and sugar-toned pale maltiness, a little sweetness of whipped syrup. In comes the tropical, charmingly citrusy hops while also being floral and a tad earthy. Moderate bitterness imparted. Lightly warming. Dry, bittersweet, fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. The mouthfeel has a bit of stickiness to it.

Overall: Some sweetness, certainly some bitterness, a bit of heftiness and some warming alcohol. Falls a bit short of Maharaja.

"What else? What else would you expect from us, a bunch of severely hop obsessed brewers, to celebrate such a glorious occasion? Anything other than a massively hopped IPA would be an affront to our rich history of loving excessive use of that beautiful flower, Humulus Lupulus." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial India Pale Ale. Brewed as Avery's 20th anniversary ale, released summer 2013 in limited release 22 oz. bottles and limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 52º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy cream white head over a very hazy amber body with no visible carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is moderate and patchy. 4.25

(Smell) Fruity, citrusy and lemony hop profile with a moderate to intense bitterness forms the hoppy nose of this beer. The malt bill seems primarily pale malt with a lightly toasted caramel syrup base and a pinch of biscuity grain. The yeast properties give the beer an enhanced fruity nose and a dash of earthy minerals. Some oxidation and graininess are evidence of the beer's age. 3.75

(Taste) Caramel malt sugars with a fruity yeast cake takeover. The hop profile is evidently lost to time, with a subtle peppery hop note remaining. It's drinkable but was certainly much better when young. Bitterness is mellow. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is slick, moderately oily with a mild dryness. Carbonation generates a soft crispness for a fuzzy mouthfeel. The body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly sweet over bitter and hoppy. Alcohol presence is medium and some oxidation and faded hop profile significantly change the nature of this beer. If you still have a bottle of this unopened, you may already be too late to enjoy it. 3.5

(Overall) Avery regularly crafts fairly solid anniversary ales that also are decent styles with a little bit of age on it. Picking up this bottle some long time ago, I knew this would be one that doesn't age well and needed to be consumed quickly, but sometimes beers slip through the cracks of time, as my bottle did. You live, you learn. If you have a bottle of this remaining, it won't be nearly as phenomenal as it was when released, but it certainly could get even worse, so drink up! 3.5
