"What else? What else would you expect from us, a bunch of severely hop obsessed brewers, to celebrate such a glorious occasion? Anything other than a massively hopped IPA would be an affront to our rich history of loving excessive use of that beautiful flower, Humulus Lupulus." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial India Pale Ale. Brewed as Avery's 20th anniversary ale, released summer 2013 in limited release 22 oz. bottles and limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 52º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy cream white head over a very hazy amber body with no visible carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is moderate and patchy. 4.25

(Smell) Fruity, citrusy and lemony hop profile with a moderate to intense bitterness forms the hoppy nose of this beer. The malt bill seems primarily pale malt with a lightly toasted caramel syrup base and a pinch of biscuity grain. The yeast properties give the beer an enhanced fruity nose and a dash of earthy minerals. Some oxidation and graininess are evidence of the beer's age. 3.75

(Taste) Caramel malt sugars with a fruity yeast cake takeover. The hop profile is evidently lost to time, with a subtle peppery hop note remaining. It's drinkable but was certainly much better when young. Bitterness is mellow. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is slick, moderately oily with a mild dryness. Carbonation generates a soft crispness for a fuzzy mouthfeel. The body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly sweet over bitter and hoppy. Alcohol presence is medium and some oxidation and faded hop profile significantly change the nature of this beer. If you still have a bottle of this unopened, you may already be too late to enjoy it. 3.5

(Overall) Avery regularly crafts fairly solid anniversary ales that also are decent styles with a little bit of age on it. Picking up this bottle some long time ago, I knew this would be one that doesn't age well and needed to be consumed quickly, but sometimes beers slip through the cracks of time, as my bottle did. You live, you learn. If you have a bottle of this remaining, it won't be nearly as phenomenal as it was when released, but it certainly could get even worse, so drink up! 3.5
