Visited Avery on a recent trip to Colorado. Went on the tour and sampled about seven beers. It was a Saturday, so I want to preface what I am about to say by saying that I understand that the place was busy because it was the weekend, BUT I must say, I have been to many breweries and many bars in my life and I have never in all my life had service as appallingly horrific as I did at their taproom.
Absolutely godawful, shameful even. There were two servers for the entire place, one full time bartender, one table server. The bartender, an unfriendly Scot (or Irishman?), kept me waiting for literally 20 minutes (I timed it out of curiosity) each and every time I walked up to the bar to order another beer. And the guy moved like molasses.
He gave preferential treatment to orders from the tables, which meant that he basically had his back to the everyone at the bar the entire time, ignoring us sad sacks who had come, cash in hand, to sample their only product--what fools! When he did, at long last, bark at you for your order, he did it in a curt, aggressive, almost demeaning way that suggested you were not worth his time and were lucky for the lack of service.
I always thought that the brewery visit/tour was the ultimate in PR for these breweries, large and small, the physical embodiment of who they are and what they stand for, but now I understand it works the other way too. Far from indoctrinated, I left this visit with a bad taste in my mouth for all things Avery, and it wasn't just the mediocre beer.
A little piece of advice fellas: hire some more waitstaff, even if it's just on the weekends. Your customers (you know, the ones who pay the bills?) will thank you.
