330ml bottle served in a Chimay chalice.

Best before 02.05.2015. Most probably bottled in 2013 (end of 2012, maybe).

A: Pours a dark and bit cloudy brown color. Some small chunks can be seen when it's poured. Forms a solid creamy beige head with low retention and only few lacings left in the glass. However a thin layer remains forever on the top

S: Roasted and very fruity, mainly. Strong notes of dry dark fruits like raisins and plums. Strong roastiness too: notes of coffee. Strong notes of caramel and candy sugar too. Very bready yeast profile, quite belgian-like. Some alcohol but quite mild considering the high ABV

T: Slightly sweet and roasted upfront. Less sweet than expected. Very fruity. Strong notes of caramel and roasted malts. Bubblegum sensation. Very bready yeasts. End is mild bitter and also a bit spicy after all

M: Heavy, creamy and a bit molasses body. Bready bittersweet aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. The Trappist stamp creates some expectations that this beer cannot accomplish. An authentic Belgian Strong Dark Ale, however, a less remarkable Trappist Ale

11.2 oz bottle was poured into a chalice.

Appearance: A one finger off white head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark amber brown color with no vision of anything.

Smell: Plums, raisins, figs, spicy yeast, warm booze, cherry, and tobacco.

Taste: Lots of dark fruit goodness, spicy yeast, clove, honey, deceiving booze for 9.7%, and a little bitterness in the end too.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth, sweet, little dry, medium to full bodied, low to medium carbonation, and warm booze.

Overall: Very enjoyable beer to start my birthday. Might have to go fact and get another bottle.

Dark brown to nearly black in color. An inch of light beige head rests on top. I smell dark malt and honey. I taste earthy dark malt and honey but it just seems a bit too simplistic. The mouth is fairly carbonated and tastes of alcohol. There's a moderate dark malt aftertaste.

Poured into a chalice glass. This is a dark mahogany colored beer with a light tan head, about a finger's height. The nose features clovy, spicy phenols, slightly woody, with a touch of caramel malt and some light ripe fruitiness. The flavor is rather heady, with malt that's more substantial than the well-known Belgian trappists, bready with caramel and toffee. Nicely phenolic as well, giving a peppery, clovy edge. Yeasty esters are present but not a major component. Strong enough to be warming, though without any tastable alcohol. Good mouthfeel, but not heavy.

Nice addition to the trappist lineup. I'd like to think with the malt they're separating themselves from the default more northern standard for the style.

Served in a big wine glass.
Appearance: Light beige, 1-finger tall, head; Brown/red color.
Smell: Blue cheese, alcohol, molasses, hints of roastiness
Taste: Malty, hints of blue cheese
Mouthfeel: Thin body, slick texture, a bit oily
Drinkability: Very interesting, complex and pleasant. The high alcohol content starts to strike you after the first half.

A: Dusty mahogany with a tan head. No lacing. Bottle art is uninspiring.

S: A little subdued; tart cherry, some faint yeast/woody malt.

T: Verging on sour, with cherries at the forefront, a drying mineral yeast finish. Hints of sweetness.

M: Seesaws from extremely velvety to medium bodied and prickled carbonation. Interesting, and works with the rest of the beer.

O: Just didn't quite cut it for me. Pretty good, but a little too timid on the aroma and taste- possibly suffering from the high alcohol?
