I bought this as part of a gift pack that included Benno and the glass.

Bottled in February 2014.

It pours a hazy, no cloudy rusty brown with a huge head of foam that is great with the lacing.

The smell has quite a bit of bitterness to it yet there's a honey sweetness going on as well. Perhaps some molasses but more interestingly, I can smell some funky notes.

The honey is the first thing I notice in the taste; quite sweet on my palate. The bitterness I noted in the smell is very citrus like in the taste and the the curious funk smell...I get that too. A very complicated beer here, I reckon.

Full bodied, medium carbonation.

This is most definitely a "weird" brew and I reckon a very polarizing one. Put me in the camp that likes it.

11.2 oz brown bottle - brewed 1/2013 noted on the label

Stift Engelszell Gregorius poured a very dark brown almost black hue that featured a nice 2-finger tan and bubbly head. The nose smells a dark caramel malt and dark fruit. The flavor is also dominated by sweet dark malts, dark bread with a little chocolate noted. There is a pleasant alcohol warming at the finish. The mouth feel is creamy with a bubbly carbonation and has a high-medium body.

Overall, this is a flavorful and enjoyable Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

Date: 11/3/14
Location: DeCicco's Harrison
Draught/Bottle: Brown Bottle
Glassware: Snifter

Appearance: Dark brown to ruby copper in color. Pours with a one inch off what head that looks rather fluffy for a strong ale. The alcohol clearly beats the carbonation back down again. Flecks of yeast can be observed near the bottom of the glass
Aroma: Starts with a candied sweetness melding with honey. Dark malts follow providing a more mellow earthy malts and some own malt sweetness of their own.
Taste: So many flavors but again starting with a slight variant on the sweetness as the sugar moves closer to brown sugar flavored. Followed by intense dark fruits ranging from grapes to plums. The alcohol really pushes away the malt flavors and dominate the flavors.
Mouthfeel: Medium body but different layers present themselves making the beer feel heavier. High carbonation reminds you that this bottle conditioning has been going on and that this beer is very much alive. The beer provides a good deal of alcohol warmth.

Notes: My first non Belgian Trappist ale this is a fantastic addition to the class. The next I'd like to enjoy is from Spencer.
