pours dark amber brown, opaque and well carbonated, small tan head that settles out quickly.

Plum and prune is there but also more straight up candy sugar from a sweet shop.

Very strong black liqourice flavour, sweet dark dried fruits get pushed out a bit but are there as well. Candied syrup, brown sugar. Very sweet, sugary, maple syrup like flavours. Lots of heat and alcohol is present. Lighter body than its compatriots.

Nice beer for sure but in the canon of trappists its not on the same level as the classics.

On tap at The Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a reddish/purplish brown, with a foamy light coffee-colored brown head.

Smells like tart cherry, raisin puree, plums, light spicing, and floral yeast.

When a bit cool, for the first half of this pour, this was pretty solid, typical but tasty Belgian strong ale. There was tons of jammy dark fruit, some toffee, and lots of Belgian yeast character. But as this warmed up, it got kinda weak, almost rank. The Belgian yeast character intensified, becoming overbearing, perfumy, and bitter, and the alcohol character also intensified, the balance was thrown off, with a largely bitter finish.

This had a really creamy mouthfeel, and a pretty absurdly high level of carbonation.

I guess just because it's a Trappist beer doesn't actually make it good. Pretty disappointed with this one.

The body is a muddled, deep rusty brown. Any more haze and it would be opaque. A finger's worth of creamy, dense, light tan head gradually recedes. No lace is left behind.

A sweet streak of alcohol really elevates and intensifies the nose. Rich, toasty nuttiness and caramel lies at its core. A vinous quality with a bit of tart cherry envelopes its sweetness. A bit of soy sauce comes out the more I smell it. Warm banana bread peaks through as well. True to the style, there's no shortage of complexity here.

Sticky raisins and dates come in full and hardy. Sweet alcohol shoots across the palate. Beneath is a rich, bready, toasty essence that gives you plenty to chew on. Ethanol cleans the palate and warms the chest.

Full bodied with a bottle-conditioned foaminess that I love. The alcohol lingers but it's not overdone. Its CO2 level is on par for the style.

I'm happy I'm able to cross another Trappist brewery off the list. I found this to be a very traditional take on the style, and me loving the style, I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Pours a dark reddish-reddish brown color with a moderate sized fizzy brown head. Recedes quicker than any head I've seen. Leaves an interesting thin island of a head in the center. Zero lacing on the sides. Definitely some interesting characteristics for a beer this ABV.

Complex aroma of caramel malts, dark fruits, sugar, and candied fruit. A good deal of alcohol.

Very sweet taste of sweet candied caramel, sugar, and ripe fruits. Cherry and raisin are strong, with a dash of fig as well. The sugary nature provides a nice bite of bitterness, and just a hint of sourness. The cherry strengthens as it warms, and it actually starts to take on an element of a Sour with the combination of cherry, bitterness, and sourness. Apple also joins the scene as it warms. Some very nice things going on here, without being quite as harsh as some Belgian Strong beers that you might see.

Remarkably drinkable at 10.5%. Medium bodied, with fairly high carbonation. A bit sticky on the finish. Manages a way to be refreshing despite it's alcoholic nature, a feat not often achieved.

Overall, a very pleasant surprise. Shocked to see this rated so low after trying it. Although this is a bit on the tame side for the style, it still has a very unique and tasty flavor profile. Strongly recommended for any fans of the style.

L: A hazy hazy chestnut pour supports a 1” cream colored foam collar with a very fine bead. S: Banana, honey, fruit, hint of cardamom or anise aromas. T: Complex spice, some darker malt, hints of chocolate, some roast, honey and a suggestion of fruit cake in the long lingering aftertastes. Moderately bitter hops provide some balance. F: A soft palate with high medium body, medium high carbonation O: Very nicely done and a pleasure to drink.

Less desserty than it's Benno counterpart, but also fairly malty and sweet. Burnt, caramelized prunes here, with a peculiar bitter finish and a lot of strength and richness, from the alcohol and the heavy malts.

Appearance: pours a muddy brown with hint of red, like prune juice; thick head sizzles away in a minute, leaving a thin film of suds

Aroma: great rich fruitiness courtesy of the yeast - prune and raisin, strawberry

Taste & Mouthfeel: intense burst of flavour, sweet like candy, even puckering, before heat of alcohol burns away the excess, leaving the palate on fire dried fruit notes and a dry finish, begging for another sip; medium-full body, has great mouthfeel from fine carbonation and unfiltered yeast.

Overall: the depth of flavour may not be as exciting as that of the top trappist beers, but it executes the style well with great feel

Dark mahogany brown with a tan head, decent but quickly fades to nothing. Aroma is dark fruit, raisins, fig, plum and a boozy background. Taste is sweet with the dark fruit and the boozy tone fills in. A soft bitter bite on the tounge for a finish is present. Smooth on the pallet, not bad.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a generous head with OK retention and light lacing notes. Aroma of caramelized malt with light dry fruits with quite a bit of residual sugar notes. Taste is also a mix between caramelized malt with some dry fruits notes with quite a bit of residual sugar. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not bad bit lacks cohesion and balance as well as those candy ester that the other Trappist have.

a: light mahogany, caramel-y, somewhat deep red with about a finger of light brown or dark tan head

s: licorice, roasty caramel/brown sugar, dark chocolate, apple, maraschino cherry, raisins/vinous scents, soy sauce, mild alcohol. very unique and complex, but not pleasant

t: follows the nose. strong-ish licorice, cocoa, and lightly salty soy sauce up front. sweet cherries, apples, and mild caramel flavours are in the mid-palate. not-so-dry finish which lets the sweetness linger

m: good medium-plus thick mouthfeel, but lacks the dryness at the end

o: chocolate-covered maraschino cherries with added artificial sweetness and soy sauce. no thanks!

330 ml bottle purchased from LCBO for $4 CDN. Served fairly cold into glassware. Nice to see a non Belgian example of a Belgian style. Advertised as 10.5% ABV.

Appearance - dark hazy brown color with some red hues. Tiny half finger of tan head was poured and dissipated quite quickly and left a minuscule soapy collar.

Smell - plenty of dark fruits, figs, plums and prunes, slightly burnt brown sugar, maybe even some grape. Inviting and very fruity. Definitely at least a little reminiscent of the classic dark Belgian ales.

Taste - massive amount of sweetness, burnt sugar, prunes and figs. Boozy too and finishes with some treacle. A bit overwhelming and unbalanced for my tastes. Still reasonable tasty.

Mouthfeel - very sweet and slightly cloying, high level of carbonation, but a bit syrupy, lacks the lightness of others in the style.

Overall - overwhelmingly sweet and cloying, just too much of the figs, prune and treacle combo. Otherwise decent body and enjoyable with a good nose. For the price though, I'd rather enjoy many of the other Belgian alternatives.

The nose is off, the taste even more and the alcohol comes through too aggressively.
If this is a strong Austrian example of a trappist beer, they have a long way to go to catch those Belgians.

Purchased at the LCBO for just over the $3.00 mark for a 330ml bottle. Served at 8deg C in a draught glass

A-Opens well and pours a 2" high light brown head that lasts for a few minutes before filming out. Very dark brown color and filtered clear

S- Fig galore. Super sweet

T- Brunt nuts, figs, molasses. Lots of heat here. Clove and nutmeg. Nice blend. A lot going on here

M- Thick!

O- Very complex brew. Very young though and hot. Needs time to settle down and blend

Food Pairing

This nice little brew went well with...... Roasted pork loin. Rub it down with salt and pepper then into the oven 15mins per pound, fat side up.

Poured from a 0.33L bottle into a Westmalle chalice. Date is 08.11.14 (best buy date, I got the bottle in February of 2014). Thanks to Jan's father for this one (any many other not reviewed...)

A: Brown body, not much head to speak of.

S: RIch dark sugar and fruit. Boozy and very pleasant.

T: Intense Belgian yeast flavors, a hint of roasted malt. An acidity in the finish.

M: Surprisingly not super heavy. Rich mouthfeel, but enough bitterness to help clear the palate.

O: Overall a great example of one of my favorite styles.

12oz bottle from 2013.

Pours cola brown with a tan head of an inch-plus. A partial skim coat for the duration of the glass with some traces of lacing.

Aromatics are filled with clove-dusted cocoa, caramel-coated apples, and a hint of booziness.

Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel.

Plenty of Belgiany phenols with chocolate and rum-soaked raisins on the palate.

Finishes slightly sweet with a lingering boozy note.

Drinks like an Imperial Dubble, tasty.

Murky, reddish brown (SRM 25). A beige, half-inch layer of fine foam settles to a thin blanket, leaving patchy lace behind. Light viscosity and tiny streaming carbonation is visible within the Rochefort chalice.

Quite sweet with candy sugar, sugar plums, light molasses, and possibly honey and clove.

The flavor is every bit as sweet as the nose had suggested. Plums and fresh pumpernickel give way to fruit juice with a sweet malty middle and a sweet finish.

Syrupy texture with a medium to full body punctuated by ample, fine carbonation. The alcohol is controlled, while residual sugar coats the palate and lips.

While more sweet than my impression of this style would anticipate, Gregorius is enjoyable. Lacking layers and complexity expected of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, this could be considered an entry level, after-work, relaxing beer.

Pours cloudy dark brown beer with 0.5-finger off-white head. Smell of dark fruits, apple and honey. Taste of dark fruits, candy sugar, raisin, warming alcohol. Medium-bodied, good brew.

500ml bottle poured into a goblet. Despite a careful pour, some yeast chunks make their way into the glass. The brew is a dark brown, quite clouded with a finger of creamy khaki head that holds well with spotty lacing.

Aroma of raisons and apple. Some dark maltiness provides a sweet sugary feel to the nose like dates, toffee and brown sugar. Slight tangy alcohol feeling.

The taste has an upfront character like cider. Lots of apple-like flavors blending with raison and brown sugar. Some neutral alcohol feel to this and a slight tang. The malt presents itself with a mild toasted feel to it.

This is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Overall not a bad brew but I wasnt the biggest fan of the strong cider flavors which comprised most of this beers profile.

Look: Dare I say a bit swampish? It's a medium, murky brown, with spotty tan fizz for a head. Not the most attractive of beers, but the low head retention is somewhat acceptable due to the high alcohol content, and the cloudiness is not atypical for the style.

Smell: Dark fruit scents are both sweet and sharp. Blackberries and fermented grapes give off a Petit Syrah character. Meanwhile, cocoa, figs, and plums add a musky softness. More malt complexity could bring some needed balance and roundness to this fruit-forward bouquet.

Taste: The juicy layers of dark fruit are given bit of a kick by a tangy, marmalade taste, and additional balance is brought on by some honey sweetness. Malt characteristics remain lacking, although the light cocoa on the nose is still present in the taste. Light bitterness settles in straight away. It is a strong and interesting concoction, but in terms of complexity, it is outdone by plenty other examples of the style.

Mouthfeel: The intense dryness is immediately apparent, adding a sort of vaporous sensation to the beginning of each sip. While quite syrupy, some weight is removed by a high level of carbonation. A tingling on the tongue builds until the taste is affected--it's as if one's taste buds have been obliterated by pop rocks.

Overall: A somewhat fascinating specimen, and yet, the flavor and aroma beg for a bit more complexity. The harsh mouthfeel is interesting, but perhaps not I the best of ways, as it begins to distract and detract from the flavor.

Pours a murky, prune juice reddish-brown producing less than a single finger of tightly bubbled, tan, shortlived head that leaves minimal lace. Aroma is malty burnt brown sugar, molasses, dark fruits, anise, spice, earthy hops, some wood & musty hay/hints of dark honey, Belgian funk & light alcohol. Taste is dark malts, sugary dark bread, anise, fig, prune, raisins, soured fruit, brown sugar, smoke, earth, alcohol & faint honey with lots of lively pepper & spice especially from mid-sip through the lightly bitter & warm finish. Aftertaste is malty, earthy woody & sweet with an alcohol prominence that fades to a faint bitter astringency. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with lively carbonation, spicy/prickly & crisp & somewhat dry late in the sip.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: medium-dark brown hue with plenty of murk and two fingers of frothy tan foam. The head has good retention and the color is great.

Smell: very sweet with a nice dark-fruit character of date, raisin and cherry. It's not hugely complex, but it's still pretty damn nice.

Taste: a little bit richer and deeper than the aroma, but along the same theme; dates, figs and tobacco are the primary flavors here. There's also a nice dustiness toward the end that I tend to enjoy in the style. A fine beer.

Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a good carbonation and a very satisfying creaminess. Quite nice.

Overall: I like this beer quite a lot. It hits my favorite areas for the style quite nicely.

Dated 02/2104.

A: Gusher. Bubbly. Pours a dark muddled brown, almost a dark ruby color. Half a fingers worth of white/brownish head. Some sediment.
S: Strong earthy tones/yeast. Light plums and cherries, dark fruit. Slight smell of sweet alcohol, lingering in the back end.
T: Very complex. Flavors of bread/yeast, mild dark fruits, plum, tobacco, light smoke. Alcohol is unnoticeable and well hidden.
M: Highly carbonated and alive. Dances on the tongue. Coats the mouth with bran flakes, plum, tobacco, and alcohol.
O: It's a very complex beer. Kind of driving my taste buds crazy right now, not in a bad way. Alcohol is well hidden throughout the beer. I like this beer more than most of the Americanized versions of a Belgian strong dark.

I purchased this at Brass Rail, enjoyed chilled in a tulip

The color is dark cocoa brown with 3 fingers of rocky sandstone head with lace that sticks to the glass. The smell is very interesting -lots of fruity esters with plum and vinous elements with slight black cherry aroma and dark sugar smell and woody accent with bready scent. The feel is strong with sweet entry and yeast texture with subtle spice and medium high carbonation with semi-dry finish and low alcohol influence.

The taste is somewhat date-like with sweet dark cherry-like flavor and earthy vinous and slightly toasted malt flavor with slight alcohol emerging as it warms with a tobacco-like earthy element with a burnt sugar flavor and dark caramel quality almost prune-like with a full sweet and dried fruit flavor. Overall this is a pretty excellent dark belgian ale with some nice yeast complexity and very drinkable in general for the 10% abv

I bought this as part of a gift pack that included Benno and the glass.

Bottled in February 2014.

It pours a hazy, no cloudy rusty brown with a huge head of foam that is great with the lacing.

The smell has quite a bit of bitterness to it yet there's a honey sweetness going on as well. Perhaps some molasses but more interestingly, I can smell some funky notes.

The honey is the first thing I notice in the taste; quite sweet on my palate. The bitterness I noted in the smell is very citrus like in the taste and the the curious funk smell...I get that too. A very complicated beer here, I reckon.

Full bodied, medium carbonation.

This is most definitely a "weird" brew and I reckon a very polarizing one. Put me in the camp that likes it.
