Poured into a BB Vanilla Porter snifter from a 32oz growler filled today at Weilands Market (the keg was tapped today).
A - pours a slightly opaque deep brown that builds to black in the glass. A finger and a half tall head builds then quickly falls to a thin skimming of foam huddling at the endges of the glass.
S - roast profiles dominate the aroma. Roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate all come through. There's an unusual almost peanut butter cup type aroma snuggled down in there. Maybe some Victory or Biscuit malts in there? Slightly smokey/peat.
T - largly follows the nose in that roast is the dominate profile in the taste as well. Very malty once you dig through the roast and bitterness. Bakers chocolate. Espresso. A very firm, fairly clean bitterness builds in the late palate and lingers for a fair amount. Alcohol is well hidden (best info I can find is this comes in around 7%ABV, which is on the light end of a RIS). The peanut butter cup aroma comes through slightly in the taste as malt derived.
M - medium bodied. Carb level is fairly low, which I think is making it feel heavier than it could be.
D - fairly low for me. The bitterness from the roast teams up with the hop bitterness and some unusual flavors, makimg it slightly like work to get through it.
Overall a decent beer with some good qualities. It's trying t be a good beer but falls a little short. The roast and bitterness levels are too unbalanced to make this beer really enjoyable, especially for the low end of style ABV. Some unexpected flavors also appear that prevent this from being a great beer. Looking forward to trying this again down the road to see if they can iron out some issues.
