Rybörg pours a lighter gold color. It looks a little more like straw color when held to light. There’s not any haze. Crystal clear. It’s topped with a modest white head. It rises to about half a finger in height before falling back. Lacing was a little sticky and moderate in volume. Not bad.
It smells pretty good. It kicks off with a nice mix of earthy and grainy notes that is attributable to the rye presence. Smells nice and spicy. The malt base is features a light, sweet caramel scent. It’s a little toasty and bread-like, as well. It’s not a bad base at all. The caramel smells subtle. That’s a plus. There are some citric hop scents. Grapefruit and orange are most notable. Smells like a bit of pine is also there. The rye and hops seem to work well together. Alcohol is very light in the mix. I’m not getting much there. Finishes spicy, citrusy, and a bit bready.
The flavor is very consistent with the nose. The malt base is bready and toasty with just a touch of sweet caramel. I like the subtlety of the caramel. It works well. Rye imparts a spicy flavor and some earthy and grainy notes. The rye flavor is nice and strong, but doesn’t completely dominate the flavor profile. Hops are also noted. They feature citrus grapefruit and orange flavors, along with a bit of pine. It is a little bitter. The hops complement the rye nicely. Neither dominates. Alcohol isn’t a factor at all. It’s a little dry, spicy, and bitter on the finish. Pretty good stuff.
The body is on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is dialed back nicely. It’s a bit thin and insubstantial. Not smooth, but not bad. It goes down awfully easy. I won’t finish the growler tonight, but it’s not an impossible thought.
Rybörg is my first beer from Hoof Hearted Brewing. I’m honestly impressed. This is a straight forward Rye Ale, but it has a nice flavor. It’s also very easy to drink. I could handle quite a bit of this on a hot day. Good stuff. Definitely worth checking out.
