Quibbles about lager vs. ale yeast aside, Genesee Cream Ale is the benchmark for this recently revived style. I've had some great homebrewed examples in the past year (and too many tiny bottles of Little Kings in a very hazy and distant past), but this is my first opportunity at the gold standard.
The beer is a very clear light gold/bright yellow with a respectable 1 inch bright white fizzy head that does manage to stick around for a while.
Aroma is grainy steely malt with a noticeable corn accent. Something slightly musty but not too distracting lurks around the faint herbal hops.
An immediate syrupy sweetness is quickly countered by a tart smack, almost like soured grain. Seems wrapped up in the obvious corn flavors, evenly matched by husky malt. Some hop bitterness comes in late but manages to keep the sweetness from getting out of control. Finishes relatively clean and dry.
Genny Cream may be the benchmark, but I wouldn't call it the best. Still, it is a fairly pleasant and innocuous quencher with more flavor than your average industrial American lager. OK.

a - pours very transparent gold. White head dissipates after a couple of minutes
s - oats and grass
t - sweet caramel and wheat
m - light and highly carbonated
o - not the greatest, but definitely drinkable, and a good beer for the price, it's great to share.
