Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue VII:
We personally think the Maibock does not get enough respect and also not enough play from American brewers. What's not to like from a muscular and hoppy lager?
Very heady from a sturdy pour down the side of the glass, stellar head retention as the lacing leaves a thick trail of rings down the glass. Clear, dull amber color. Snappy biscuit, almost cracker-like maltiness and a pleasantly spicy hop in the very clear aroma. Smooth and slick medium to full body holds on to a minimal amount of crispness. Maltiness flexes with biscuit and toasted bread overtones, which, for the most part, are on the dry side. A touch of warmth from the clean alcohol. Ghost-like cooked corn and sulphur, which is very lager-like, lie far beneath the malt and hops. Hop bitterness comes in broadly, balancing the beer right away and in its wake leaving a spicy herbal character that lasts long into the dry finish.
Nothing complex, nothing for the über beer snobs, but this is one damn good Maibock. This could easily be a mainstay on our beer fridge year-round.
